ORE.. NOV. 8 1912 Tbe overwhelming Demooratio suo cess is evolved from political eoonom io conditions wbiob confront tbe peo ple of tbe United State?. Tbe person ality and popularity of Woodrow Wil son, William Jennings Bryan and otber eminont Demooratio leaders have little to do with tbe greatest landslide in political history. Tbe kernel of victory results direotly from the stand these men took at tbe convention in Baltimore, wbeu they wrenobed tbe Demooratio party from tbe baleful In flnenoes of toe trusts, big business and predatory interests. Right there tbe light was won. Tbe stamp of confi dence was plaoad in tbe party and its platform aud its candidates, booked by tbe Nation's faitb, came fortb and won easily, from Wilson down. Bat tbe winning is not all there is to it. The people have placed their govern mental, sooial aud commercial destiny in tbe bands of tbe party. On tbe face of tbe elootiou retnrus, the party has everything to go with and it is up to it to make good. Failure to give the people relief simply means repudiation of the Baltimore platform, and four years from now would meet witb tbe same nature of defeat uocoid ed Taft aud the Republican patty polilioal oblivion acd snob defeat would be a merited one. In full power and control, from tbe presideuoy down, the part; is in position to carry out every promise nSade at Baltimore, make needed reforms, serve tbe people honestly and faithfully and rescue tbe government from tbe oommeroialized condition into whloh it was plunged by a high protective tariff propoRanda; and this wltnout the free trade bug aboo, but a sane, conscientious, houent tariff rednotiou where needed, tbe restoration of competition in all branobes of commercial industry and an equitable administration of govern ment to all olnsses aud sections of tbe oountrj. Theodore Roosevelt began a civil suit for damages and instituted criminal proceedings in Michigan against George A. Newett editor of tbe Ish- peming Iron Ore, for libel. The libel ous word as reported by tbe Cbioago Tiibnne appeared in tte Iron Ore of Ootaher 13, as follows: "Roosevelt lies aod curses in a most disgusting way; be gets drunk, too, and tbat fre quently, aod all bis intimates kuow about it." ed tbe marshal job and went to Pen dleton. He now finds himself defend ant to a $10,000 damage suit, institut ed by one Unorge McUanghey, wbo alleges that Jost twioe imprisoned him falsely. It is said tbat Mr. Mo Gangbry on two different occasion'' took on too moob booze aod tbe mar shal playing no favciitis, escorted bim to tbe oooler as bed been bis cus tom in handling otber drnnks. Tbe first convention of Police wom en evei held io tbe United States baa reoectly taken place in Portland. Women oonneoted witb tbe polioe de partments of Northwestern ditie met to ooneidcr problems constantly com ing np, snub as the prevention of de linquency among tbe young, treatment of women prisoners, oare of jails, re formatories, eto. Oregon will soon be producing large quantities of salt. Development work on Summer and Albert lakes has been started and it is expected to produce 400,000 tons of salts in these lakes and a 40 year lease has beenseonred. More salt than is taken from Salt Lake, Utah, is expeoted to be secured an nually from these Oregon waters. Aocordiug to figures submitted to Labor Commissions! Hoff for bis bien nial report by Herbert Boylen, seore tary of tbe board of sbeep commis sioners, there are 2,409.800 sbeep in tbe state of Oregoo, valued at f 1 eaob making total of $9,639,200. Dating last year Oregon sbeep produced 18,- 500,000 pounds of wool. With eggs at 60 cents a dozen in Portland tbe gieat American hen mast feel that tbe beef trust baa no thing on ber, when the high cost of living is considered. Starvation of English suffragettes in prisons may break tbem down phy sically , but it appears to have tittle e (led on tbeir spiiits. A NEW COURSE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL LECTURES Continued From Page One. It seems Io be a common failing for men to drive tbeir bad luck, says an exohange. When a merchant or a business man is getting along satis factorily be makes little effort to ex tend bis bnsiness. lie seems content. When, bewever, tbe tidr, turos the otber way, be becomes desperate to revive bia business and will often fool ishly expend his monev in advertising for bnsiness when there is none, Now tbe time that be should make some effort to extend bis business is when bo is doing good a business. That is the time to Bdveitlse it and that is tbe time that mote business oau be se cured. To sum the matter op a wise man will pi ess his good fortune and the more business he does tbe more effort be will exert to seoare nioie and when the conditions change he sbonld Change with them. Many men never advertise until about the time they are going, broke and they make a melees effort, Tramp printers are the most un reliable, ungrateful wt eto lies ou the faoe of the earth) anyway, this is tbe conclusion tbat R. 0. Julian, pub lisher of tbe Uelix Advocate, has doubtless arrived at. He eutered bis cllioe last Friday to Hod bis partuur, Preston, had absoouded with about ?250 of tbe prooeeds of the off Ion aud not a stick of type set for the weekly Issue of the Advooate. Suob ooudi linns, however, are easily surmounted I the Indomitable Juliau, aud char i.oteristioally he comes laok with tbe announcement tbat no old $350 era beezlemeut of Advocate foods will stop the Helix paper from growing in to an lnnfleutial member of the coun ty's joutoalUtio family. Bravo, Jul ian, keep 'er bead to the storm. It is astonishing bow many negleot to itgitter before election day. In Athena Tuesday the justice office was open all day long for the aooommoda lion of those wbo bad to be iworo witb fix witnesses at to qaaliQations. Tbe day passed off quietly, the voters' minds apparently being preoccupied with tbe momeutous weight of respon sibility iu votiug tbe 35 proposed amendments. A favoiite bloat of theirs is to pruuoGoue the "couset ra tion of natoral resources" as less im portant than the conservation "of bu rn aa resources." Since human re- priation to oover tbe actual expense; or the necessary funds could be easily raised by a aohool entertainment. "Through the"luotnre plan, it is bopod to make tbe school the sooial center of tbe oommnnity. It often happens that tbe only pcblia speakers we have the privilege of bearing are those who are advocating a oanse of special interest to themselves. The sabjeots for this coarse are ours of value to tbe whole oommnnity, sab jeots ou whiab all good citizens will te glad to seonre aoonrate informa tion. The men aud women wbo have promised to deliver lectures will have only one objeot in view, the welfaie and betterment of tbe citizenship of Oregon, "The subjects for the looture course: New View of Boy Lite; New View of Rooreation; New View of Education ; New View of Human Life; New View of Rural Life; New View of Peoples' Wealth ; New View of Workingmen's Rights; New View of Community Life; New View of PnbJio Finance; New View of Crime and Criminals." " ' Bubbles, Wilting to a friend, tbe author of European Years" includes what he terms "a couple of bubbles" in one let ter. One, he says, bo found In the London Telegraph, the other be does not account for. Well, this is the bubble: Tbe new bishop of New Zealand, in a farewell and pathetic Interview with bis moth er after his appointment, was thus ad dressed by her, in such sequence as sobs and tears would permit: "I sup pose they will eat you, my dear. 1 try to think otherwise, but 1 suppose they will. Well, we must leave it in the hands of providence. But if they do, mind, my dear, and disagree with them." Another bubble, and a very tiny one: Foster arrived late for his dinner, apol ogized for being late, explaining that he had been detained by having to stand godfather to one of Charles Dickens' children. "1 hope," said Doug las Jerrold, "that If you gave tbe child a mug, It wasn't your own." Miss Krcbs Entertains Miss Untb Krebs eutertaiued the J. J'. F. club at the homn of Mrs. A. A. Helnackan, the German Prodigy. Christian Henry Helnecken, the most wonderful of all the world's pre cocious prodigies, was born at Lubeck, Germany, in the year 1721. When hut nine and a half months of age this human wonder could pronounce every word contained In the German lan guage, and before he had rounded out his iirst year of earthly existence he knew all the leading events of the worlt's history. At the age of four teen months he could give chapter and verse of any quoted passage of the Scriptures and knew the history of every book In both the Old and New Testaments. At the age of two and a half years he could answer every question In the geographies and histo ries then in use and could converse with visitors In either German, French, Dutch, Latin or Greek. His fourth year was devoted to the study of re ligion and ancient history. He had finished the studies mentioned and had started on a course in oriental religion when he suddenly died before complet ing his fourth year. Professional Instinct In Birds. In the stormy part of, tbe year a steamer encountered rough weather, and, as often happens at such times, many sea gulls hovered near the Bhlp and even came on board. One allowed Itself to be caught, and it was found that it had a fish bone stuck in the eye In such a position as not absolutely to destroy the sight, but penetrating an Inch into the flesh of the bird and pro jecting an inch and a half. It might hare had a fight with a fish or got transfixed seeking its prey. The doc tor of the ship took the bird, extracted the bone, applied a soothing remedy to the wound and let it go. It flew away, but returned the next day, allowing it Belf to be caught The doctor exam ined the wound, which was progressing favorably, applied more of the remedy and let the bird go a second time. It flew several times around the ship and then departed and returned no more. London Sketch. J. A. Sala and His Epitaph. 'A passport to the north pole was Is sued some years ago by the governor of the province of Tobolsk, which stretches along the1 Russian shores of the Arctic ocean. The official was ap proached by two men who had been engaged to proceed to the north with on English expedition then fitting out. Their petition was for a passport to the pole itself, but the governor point ed out that the pole was as likely to be in their home province ns In any other, that It was extremely unlikely they would reach it and that If they did there were no police there to ex amine their credentials. At last, how ever, to satisfy them he ordered the Issue of a document allowing them to pass without let or hindrance to the north pole. Futility of Education. An eminent physician, at a recent convention of railway surgeons In Phil adelphia, said of n safety device that has averted many railway accidents: "The advantage of this device is now almost universally recoguized. Indeed, the railroader who disputes its advan tages is as antiquated ns the old resl denter who Raid: " 'Edicatlon be hanged Thar's young Bill Smithers took- an englneerin' course iu a correspondence school nnd then put up a slgu ou his enrriage house and hadn't no better sense than to spell "carriage" "garage."
