ORE.. MAR. 8, ,1912 Cold storage warehouse? perform bo important a funotion in modern food preserving that the time has come when the Federal government ought to regnlate them just aa it. ia now try ing to regnlate , the railroads. So large a percentage of the people's food is stored in cold storage that the control of these warehouses and tbeir contents means absolute control of the prioes of. snoh farm produce as battel, oheese, eggs, apples, poultry, fish, meats, dried fruits, eto. One of the chief causes of the constantly inoreas-1 ing prices of these products is the faot that they have beoome articles of speculation just as wheat, corn, oats and bog products have and the spec ulative trade is carried on in much " the same way, to wit: by the circula tion of "bullish" news ot all kinds, suoh as orop failures, abnormal can sumption, large export demand, , and the like. If all the perishable food prodoota now stored in ooolera had to go into consumption at the time of maturity, the price would be so low that tbe producer would be bankrupt ed: and at oiber seasons of tbe year, by reason of tbe difficulty and expense of producing them out of season, tbe price would be so exorbitant tbat few people oould buy. The . cold storage warehouse has, therefore, beoome a necessity and should be regulated as all publio utilities are being regulated. Of tbe ten thousand persons who beard William Jennings Bryan at Portland, not one perhaps but realized be was listening to logic coming from the lips of a great man, one of tbe greatest of tbe nation. Truly a great man. One who can hold bis bearers in tbB recounting of the nation's need and, tbe unraveling of eoouomio con ditions, domooratio to the core and 'witbal'endowed with a brilliant cou oeptiou of statesmanship, Bryan tbe teaober fails in securing tbe suffrage of tbe people that would exalt Li in to tbe position of Bryan tbe executive. Ilia Northwestern trip bus demonstrat ed agaiu that be is tbe strongest man in tbe domooratio party, but nominat ed for tte presidency he would be de feated a fourth time. Tbe great goal of bis ambitiou baviug been denied bim, be still stiives to better tbe con ditiou of bis people and tbe great orowds wbo assemble. to hear bim are colossal testimony of tbe regard in which Bryan tbe man, is held in tbe esteem of tbo people wbo persist in withholding from bim tbat for wbiob be Ins so courageously and valiantly striven to attain. "Advertising is salesmanship ot tbe highest cbaraoter and, with a single exception, (roligion,) is the greatest force iu tbe world," is what A. 0. Loom Is told tbe retail morobants of Spokane at tbe recent convention. 'It will make yon know the one thing in n thousand tbat is worth knowing; reduce the selling cost of any com modity, and also reduce the cost of tbe artloleitsolf; tulld a mighty institu tion of Industry from an lusiguifloant beginning iu a few years; and, last and best, make the merobaut wbo uses it'more prosperous, tbe towu in wbiob be lives more prosperous and the laud around him more ."aluable. Iu other Words, the newspaper advertising col umns oreate a inutualii of interest between the seller and buyf. .Adver tising teduoea the selling cost, thus saving money to the seller, aud redac es tbe aotual cost, thus bringiug eoon oiny to tbe purchaser. The newspaper advertising columns are tbe basis of cooperation between buver and seller. The sensible people of tte country have long sinoe become thoroughly disgusted with the "soul-mate" non sense, uot to call it by a harsher same. Now tbe feather-braiued ad vocates of this modern form ot tbe old and revolting "fiee love" dootrlue are having foroed upon them the legiti mate results of their deQauoe to moral and social law. Heyburn says tbe Oiegoo system Is "a straw vote;" Wiokersbam calls it "postal card lawmaking," aud mem bers of tbe Republican State Ceutral oommittee will prooeed to test tbe constitutionality of eeleotiog presiden tial electors at the primaries in "friendly" suit. With this galaxy of knookeis hammeriug disooidau'ly, it may be like grasplug at a straw to quote Justice White' deoisiou, wbiob ' decrees that Oregon method of making laws and selecting candidates if at varianoe with tbe wishes of the people may be purified ty tbe legislative branch of the government, that the ju diciary is out of place in tbe task of ironing out tbe wrinkles of tbe initia tive, the referednum and tbe stBte primary law. Bowline Bcores great gains beoause it is great sjort. It is interesting, of-1 ten exoitiog, and it furnishes exeroise wbiob can be adapted to tbe needs and pleasures of tbe weak and tbe strong, tbe .young and tbeir elders. It is a eooiable sport and free from all forms of brutality or violence. John P. "Jerry" Rusk HIS MILD REPROOF. j The Mate Let the Captain Down Easy About His Mistake. The skipper was n man wbo had 'a good opinion of himself and hia no tions. He had pulled through snip wreck, mutinr-and other perils of the deep, but he came a cropper once. For one of hia voyages he bad shipped a boatswain's mate who bore something- of a reputation. One dar the skipper ordered bim feloft to examine a sail on tho royal yard. . "Tain't safe; can'n " protested the boatswain's mate. "The foot ropes has got to be fixed first" "Do as I tell you!" thundered the captain. "The foot ropes are all right I know they are." The man went np. Five minutes later he came tumbling down through the rigging from the top of the mast, a distance of over 100 feet With a bang he landed on the belly of the mainsail and bounded into one of the canvas covered boats. The sailors, thinking . him dead, crowded about him in n circle. - To their amazement he sat up. Ills eyes wandered vacantly about until they rested on tbe leathery face of the skipper, when they lighted up with intelligence. "Cap'n," he said slowly, "you was mistaken about them foot ropes." London Tit-Bits. VALE OF THE WYE. Glimpse of an Imposing and Romantlo Spot In Wales. Those who travel through strange places with their eyes and their ears open are likely to make strange discov eries, but there are plenty of other finds which, simply as a delight to the senses and without any wonder or cu rloslty attending them, are well worth tho trouble of trying to forget one's preoccupation in what he sees and hears. Both these pleasures of travel come to those who will fare slowly and ob ecrvlngly through the Vale of tbe Wye in Wales. It seems almost like a chap ter from some magnificent Apocalypse to travel on to Cndor hud Plynllmon and glimpse the imposing grandeur of the visions that await the appreciative eye. Half of Wales seems to lie before tho traveler. The mountains of tbe Cnder range loom loftily, and Snow don, of tho lakes, seems to beckon him on. Tho long headland of Carnorvon hugs half a sea iu the crook of its nrm. Pembroke's ragged capes glonm be yond the lovely mountainous heights, No sound breaks tho vast silence. You nro shut off from tbe bustling world. Tho hnwk circles in a noiseless void above tho slopes whitened with graz ing sheep. For a moment there may be the feeblo plpo of the whentear, and for another brief space n lark may Hit praise to heaven. But that is nil. Philadelphia North American. Putting It Nicely. There is a good deal in putting a thing nicely. A prisoner was being sentenced at tho assizes tho other flay. "You have a pleasant home and a bright fireside with happy children sit ting around it, haven't you?" eald the Judge. "Yes, sir," said the prisoner, who thought he saw a way out of the diffi culty. "Well." said the Judge, "If the happy children sit around the cheerful Ore side until you return they will stay, there Just two months."-London Tlt Bits. NOTICE TO CREDITORS. ''fa m If you stop to figure out where the true economy in paint buying comes, you'll soon see that the best paint is cheapest. Two-thirds the cost of paint ing is the labor. It costs just as much to put on poor paint as it does good paint- -race in fact because the poor paint doesn't work so easily. But the poor paint won't last as long ; it makes you repaint sooner. . ' Even the apparent saving in cost per gallon is eaten, up by the fact that it takes more gallons of the low priced painU ' The truest economy is good prepared paint. The truest prepared paint is THE SHERWIM-WILUAMS PAIMT.
