They Burled Bill When It Was Other
Twin Who Drowned, Said
Mark Twain.
Once upon a time Mark Twain was
interviewed. After various questions
the interviewer came to the question
of relatives, and from then on, accord
ing to Twain's own version of things,
the conversation ran thus:
"Who is this picture on the wall?
Isn't that a brother of yours?"
"Oh, yes, yes! Now that you remind
me of it, that was a brother of mine.
That's William, Bill we called him.
Poor old Bill!"
"Why, is he dead, then?"
"Ah, well, I suppose so. We never
could tell. There was a great mystery
about it."
"That was very, very sad. He disap
peared, then?"
"Well, yes, in a general sort of way.
We buried him."
"Buried him! Buried him without
knowing whether he was dead or
not?"
"Oh, no! Not that. He was dead
enough."
"Well, I confess that I can't under
stand this. If you buried him and you
knew he was dead "
"No, no! We only thought he waa,
"Oh, I see, he came to life again."
"I bet he didn't."
"Well, I never heard anything like
this. Somebody was dead. Somebody
was buried. Now, where was the mys
tery?"
"That's Just it. That's it exactly!
You see, we were twins defunct and
I; and we got mixed in the bathtub
when we were only two weeks old
and one of us was drowned; but we
didn't knoV which. Some think it
was Bill; some think it was me."
"Well, that was remarkable. What
do you think?"
"Goodness knows! I would give
whole worlds to know. This solemn,
this awful mystery has cast a gloom
over my whole life. But I will tell you
a secret now, which I have never re
vealed to any creature before. One of
us had a peculiar mark, a large mole,
on the back of his left hand; that was
me. That child was the one that was
drowned. So, you see, they made an
awful blunder. I was drowned, but
they went and buried the wrong child.
Sh-h-h-h-h, don't say a thing about it
where the family can hear it. It's a
very sore spot."

The Junkman of the Sea.
The carrier snail is to the sea what
the junkman is to the land. It receives
its name from its habit of carrying for
eign objects on its back. Nothing
comes amiss to the carrier snail if it
is not too big. Cast-off shells of small
molluscs, bits of broken coral, tiny
stones, and even fragments of broken
glass dropped overboard from passing
vessels are cemented firmly to the
edges of the growing shell. Nor is it
satisfied when the shell 'is completely
covered, but continues to add to its col
lection by fastening new pieces to the
old ones already piled upon its back
until it is no longer able to move be
neath its burden.
As it is an inhabitant of tropical wa
ters swarming with voracious fish,
crabs, etc., there is method in its mad
ness; its hungry enemies pass it by un
able to distinguish it from the rocks
and shells on the eea bottom. Some of
the snails show a preference for tiny
pebbles all of one shape and equal
size, others accumulate only shells of
one kind, and one picked up off the
coast of Japan had its portable house
entirely roofed with glass.

Growing Umbrella Handles.
At Maule, a small village near
Paris, is carried on a singular indus
try which is little known. It is a
nursery for the cultivation of trees
suitable for use as umbrella handles,
walking sticks and alpenstocks.
Nearly 500 acres of ground are given
over to ash, oak, chestnut and maplo
saplings. One year after planting
these are cut off near the root so as
to make them grow several branches,
which are then kept free from sec
ondary stems.
The most curious part of the indus
try comes the following year. In
cisions are made in the bark, thus en
graving upon it various designs. When
the bark is stripped these designs are
found traced on the wood. At the end
of the third year the branches are
cut, stripped of their bark, bent into
various shapes and sent to the manu
facturers. Certain forms of handles
are shaped while the branches are
till growing. Popular Magazine.

River Flows Inland From Sea.
A currant of water will flow back
and forth in a tide-water river, but
on the Island of Cephalonla, near
Greece, says Popular Mechanics, la
the curious phenomena of a river
steadily flowing inward from the sea
and disappearing. All rivers naturally
flow toward the lower levels to the
sea, and this curious Instance on the
island in the Mediterranean Is not du
plicated anywhere else In the world
so far as is known.
The sea, which Is almost tideless,
enters the land at four points where
the coast Is practically on a level with
the surface of the sea. These four
streams unite to form the little river
that flows inland until it finally dis
appears in the limestone rocks and
sinks into the earth. The volume of
the river is too great to be removed
by evaporation and the question is,
Where does it go?
