Athena won the game in the first inning, when five rnns were made. Bliss, first man op for Pendleton, BOratohed oat a single, was sacrificed to seoond by Nelson, took third on a passed ball and scored when Clark failed to hold the ball, thrown to oatoh Kevins at first, with two down. That was all for Pendleton. Frink tightened np and allowed bnt two more bits and not another bine olad player reaobed second base. Three others got to first, two of tbem were handled by Brown's whip to seoond, and the other died at first station. Owens struck out in Athena's half of the first Then Hollis fait Lieuallen. Frink ambled np to the plate and Shaffer, taming a baok handspring, yelled : "Give-it-to-me, boy, give-it-to mel" But the nifty pitoher clouted it on the nose for a three-bnKger, over left field, into the wheat Hold beyond, and the ball would have been rolling yet bad not its progress been retarded by the growing graio. Lieuallen soored on the hit. Only one down, and the redoubtable Hollis prooeeded to get himself in a pinob by passing Pellaud; whiob was some beadwork, too but be whs not oounting on Brown, the captain of the Millers, who also uses bis bead. Brown after having two strikes against him, coaxed Hollis to split the base. Bing 1 Away oat in center went spinning another three base bit, Frink and Pel land scoring. Pioard was safe on first when Dix on let his infield drive get away from him, Brown coming in from third. Pioard stole second and third and scored when Kevin's error left Clark safe at first In the seoond Shaffer singled, bnt was thrown out at seoond by Brown, Pellund waiting for the runner with the ball in his band. Ward got the other and last bit for Pendleton, but died at first, when Hollis and Collan- der went out. In the third Brown smashed ont a double, took third on a passed ball and scored on Bnndy's single. This ended the scoring. Hollis settled down and the balance of the same resolved itself into a pitcher's duel, with Frink nolding the top hand. He struck out fourteen of the Fendletonians, while Hollis whiffed 15 of Littlejobn's men, bnt be was free with passes, giving transpor tation to three and hitting two batters. Athena also populated the bases with more men, having seven left at the stations to Pendleton's one. Manager Nelson is getting his team in shape and with the reoent addition of a oouDle of new men, his players cive evidence of being able to pat crimp in any old ball game from on.
