Tushmaker's Pulling Machine Was
a Wonderful Invention.
KILLED HIS FIRST PATIENT.
Cut That Simply Couldn't Be Helped,
and the Autopsy Showed Why the
Victim Lifted Hie Right Leg Each
Time the Lever Was Turned.
Mr. Tushmakcr was never regularly
bred ns a physician or surgeon, but he
possessed naturally a strong mechan
ical genius and a Cue appetite, and,
finding his teeth of great service in
gratifying the latter propensity, ho
concluded that ho could do more good
in the world and create more real hap
piness therein by putting the teeth
of Its inhabitants iu good order than
in. any other way, so' TushmaUer be
rime a dentist.
He was the man who first Invented
the method of placing small cog
wheels in the back teeth for the more
perfect mastication of food, and ho
claimed to be the original discoverer
of that method of filling cavities with
a kind of putty which, becoming hard
directly, causes the tooth to ache so
grievously that it has to be pulled,
thereby giving the dentist two suc
cessive fees for the same job.
Tushmakcr was one day seated in
his office in the city of Boston when a
stout old fellow named Byles pre
sented himself to have ti back tooth
drawn. The dentist seated his patient
in the chair of torture and, opening
his mouth, discovered there an enor
mous tooth on the right hand side
about ns large, ns ho afterward ex
pressed it, "as a small polyglot Bi
, bio." "I shall have trouble with this
tooth," thought Tushmakcr, but he
clapped ou his heaviest forceps and
. pulled. It didnt come. Then ho tried
the tumscrew, exerting his utmost
strength, but th'o tooth wouldn't stir.
"Go away from here," said Tush
mnker to Byles, "and return in a week
nnd I'll draw that tooth for you or
know the reason why." Byles got up,
clapped a handkerchief to his jaw nnd
put forth.
Then the dentist went to work, and
in three days ho invented an instru
ment which ho was confident would
pull anything. It was a combination
of the lever, pulley, wheel and axle,
Inclined plane, wedgo and screw. The
castings were made and tho machino
put up in tho office over an iron chair
rendered perfectly stationary by iron
rods going down Into tho foundations
of tho granite building.
In a week old Byles returned. He
was clamped' into tho iron chair, tho
forceps connected with tho machine
attnehod firmly to tho tooth, and Tush
inaker, stationing himself In tho rear,
took hold of a lever four feet in
length. IIo turned it slightly. Old
Byles gave a groan and lifted his
right leg. Another turn, another
groan, and up Vent tho leg again.
"What do you raise your leg for?"
asked tho'doctor.
"I can't help it," snld tho patient.
"Well," rejoined Tushmakcr, "that
tooth is bound to come out now."
lie turned tho levf r clear round with
a sudden Jerk and snapped old Byles'
head clean nnd clear from his shoul
ders, leaving a spice of four inches
between tho severed parts. They had
a postmortem examination. Tho roots
of tho tooth wcro found extending
down tho right Bide, through the right
leg and turning up In two prongs un
der tho solo of tho right foot.
"No wonder," said Tushmakcr, "ho
raised his right leg."
Tho jury; thought bo, too, but they
found the .roots much decayed, and,
flvo surgeons swearing that mortifica
tion woidd. , havo ensued in a few
months, Tushmnkej was cleared on a
verdict of "Justifiable homicide."
IIo was n little sby of that Instru
ment for somo titiM) afterward, but
one day an old hwly, feeble and flaccid,
camo in to have a tooth drawn, and,
thinking that It would come out very
easy, Tushmakor concluded, just by
way of variety, to try tho machine,
lie did so nnd, nt the first turn drew
tho old ludy's, skeleton completely and
entirely from her body, leaving her a
mass of qu ivering Jolly in her chair.
Tushmakcv took her homo iu a pillow
case. She lived seven years after that,
and t hoy called her the "India rubber
woman.'? Sho had suffered terribly
with ilje rheumatism, but after this
occurrence never had a pain iu her
bones.' The dentist kept them in a
glass case.
Aftr this tho machino was sold to
tho contractor of the Boston custom
house, and it was found that a child
of three years of ago could, by a slu
lilts turn of the screw, raise n stono
weighing twenty-three tons. Smaller
ones were made on the samo principle
ami sold to the keepers of hotels aud
restaurants. They were used for bon
ing turkeys. There Is no moral to this
Htoiy whatever, and it is possible that
the circumstances may have become
slightly exaggerated. Of course there
can be no doubt of the truth of tho
main incidents.-John rhoenlx.

FOR JOINT REPRESENTATIVE
T. J. Mahoney Gives Some Reasons
Why He Should Be Eleeted.
T. J. Mahoney, Republican nominee
for joint representative, served the
people of Umatilla and Morrow coun
ties in the last session of the legisla
ture. He waa generally recognized
as 0D6 of the leaders and had muoh in
fluence in matters of legislation for
bis distriot.
Mr. Mahoney is the sole candidate
from Morrow county upon the legis
lative ticket. Umatilla has two sep
arate representatives as well as a sen
ator and joint senator, while under
the law Morrow county is permitted
only joiut representative with Uma
tilla county.
Mr. Mahcuey is interested in a num
ber of business enterprises within the
distriot and is a strong champion of
all progressive legislation for the ben
efit of all the people.
He believes in and is a strong sup
porter of the Direct Primary and
pledges bimsolf to vote and work
against any attempt to amend any law
now upon the statute books enacted
by the people. ' '
Morrow county citizens selected
him as their unanimous cboioe at the
Primaries and it is believed that the
citizens of Umatilla county will be
generous eoongh to allow one repre
sentative for that oonnty.
Mahoney is a strong, able man. He
is a Spanish-American war veteran
and while bis opponent was probably
lobbying, Sergeant Mahoney was fight
ing for bis country.
Help Morrow county, help Umatilla
county and vote for Mahoney for joint
representative.

GOLD LEAF.
Made Now Practically It Wat Made
Nine Centuries Ago.
In an article on gold leaf In the Mag
azine of Commerce John Mastln says
that Just ns the date of the discovery
of gold Is too remote even to be guess
ed at so is the origin of gold leaf lost
In antiquity.
On somo of the most ancient mum
mies discovered gold leaf has been used
on the Bkln, tongue, teeth, etc., arid
in some Instances on the coffins also.
It also appears on tombs, monuments
and the like, and, strange to say,
though gilding with "thin sheets of
hammered gold" and "skins of gold"
otherwise gold leaf was known to be
practiced at least in the eighth cen
tury B. C, the process of bringing the
gold into these fine sheets or "skins"
was, at any rate In the eleventh cen
tury A. D., substantially the same as
that used today, no advance whatever
having been rnado in the intervening
nine centuries.
Further, on some of the Grecian pot
tery of the fifth century the gold leaf
used is as thin as that used today, so
that iu results obtained also we have
not advanced in the least, but still keep
practically to the same average thick
ness ns that used on the Egyptian cof
flus of the third century A. D. and
most of the Greek vases of the fifth.
Vonen' Time Sohedulee.
Few women speak of a tralu starting
slightly oft tho even hour, as the 3. 02
train, for example, or the 3:12. "Throe"
will do. It bothers a man a heap to
go hunting for a 3 o'clock train by
femtnlne directions when it is a 3:12
train. For some women "3" will do
for the 2:5-1 train; It's near enough.
Then the man following feminine .di
