The first annual track meet and oratorical oontest to be given under the auspioes of the Umatilla County Atbletio and Oratorical Association, of whioh A. U. Hampton of Pendletou is president, A. E. Gronewold is trea surer and H. G. Case is secretary, will take place in this city tomorrow. The athletic meet will take plaoe in the city park, and the oratorioal cop test will te given at the Methodist Episcopal oburob, .beginning at 7:30 p. m The athletio program begins at 1 o'clock and will be preoeded by a ball game between the Columbia Col lege team and a mixed team from the Pendleton Aoademy, wbiob takes plaoe at 10 a. m. An admittance fee of 25 cents will be. charged at the ball game and at the athletio meet, and also tor tbe oratorioal oontest. This is nec essary for the reason that tbe Asso ciation has no funds with wbiob to meet tbe general expenses inourred in giving tbe meet. No entrance fee ' to the atbletio events is charged. Prat. Case informs the Press that he has reoeived notification from Milton, Pendleton and other points in tbe oounty that large crowds will be in attendance. Mr. Case has written over 200 letters, so he informs us, to parties thronghout the county con cerning the meet, and ho expeots the first annual meet to be a success. Tbe traoa will be in first class con dition and with tbe removal of tbe grand stand to the park, seating ac commodations for tbe spectators of the races and other events, will be pro vided. SEATING THE PARK Business Men and Property Owners Will Place Seats and Benches for Convenience of Public. W. J. Gbolson, of the oity park oommittee has hit upon a novel plan to seoure seats for the park. He met with stunning suooess and in a short time there will te plenty of seats to aooommodate tbe general publio. Mr. Gbolson solicited the business men and property owners for individ ual seats, and the scheme met witb popular f aver. The individual is giv en permission to contribute any style of seat he wishes, and oan make it any size be desires. Many cf the business men will have tbeir advertisements on tbe seat fur nished by tbem and novelties in this respeot are looked for. No one is barred from having bis individual seat at tbe paik, and many will make seats large enough to aooommodate six or eight persons. There will be work for tbe carpen ter and painter for several days to come, for nearly every head of a fam ily in town, and other beads who haven't any family, have promised to furnish a feat. The grand stand was moved Wed nesday from tbe ball grounds above town to tbe athletio side of tbe paik. This struoture will give large seating oapacity for ball games and field events. b r 8. - i . 5, DEATH OF A LOVABLE GIRL Ettahell Swaggart, After Lingering for Months Passes Away Wednesday. Ettabell SwBggart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Swaggart, died Wed ueday afternoon at tbe home of her parents, after lingering since the first of tbe year witb a fatal malady result ing from an attack of appendioitis. She was a lovable child and bore her suffering with great bravery and fortitude. Some time ago she was afllioteed witb appendicitis, and all that med ical skill could do was accomplished. She auDarentlv rallied for awhile bnt later declined and was taken to Pen dleton for treatment, but continued to fail, and was Lroucht home several dava a bo. Sbe was born at tbe home ox ber parents north of Atbena and at tbe time of death was oged IS years and four months. Father, mother, two sinters and two brotbets are left to mourn tbe loss of a kind and lovable sister, but tbe burden of grief is greatly alleviated in tbe knowledge that all bad been done for tbe dear one that it was possible to do.
