The knocker ia knocked by bis own
koookiug, comments the Canyon City
Eagle. "Knock and it shall be open
ed nuto yon" was not spoken for tbe
knocker. 'Ibis was meant for the
eeeker. There never was a knocker
who was a seeker, and seekers don't
knooK. A knocker is a cross between
a failure and a crime. He has no
hope in himself, nor faith in anybody
else,. He is a moral wart destined
to sizzle in sulphur. Into the bine
dome of heaven he looks, sees the
reflection of himself and knocks tbe
stars. His own image he sees in crys
tal waters, and he knocks nature for
supplying bum water. In the shim
mer of the moonbeam be sees his own
self -despised form silhouetted against
the mightiest works of man and he
condemns all. Wherever he moves
be leaves a Blimey trail like the path
of a snail, and when at last he reaches
his eternal bed of brimstone, above
all of the din of tbe wailing and
gnashing of teeth will be beard tbe
clarion knook of the biped who will
not even seo any good in bis ilk being
toasted on the prong of a one tine
pitchfork.
A movement has beeu started iu
Boston by Mrs. Ulendower Evans, a
well-known club-woman, to establish
a pension bank for spinsters, whiob,
she believes, will do away with mer
cenary marriages, penniless spinsters,
worry about busbands and jokes
about old maids. She has presented
hor plans to the members of the
Massachusetts iusuranoe commission,
and has interested many clubwomen
iu her projeot. Her first problem was
to determine the age of the spinster,
and after careful deliberations she
decided that it begins at 40 years.
Before that age, she says, a woman
has good ohanoes of matrimony. A
depositor, however, may open an ao
count with the iusuranoe bank as
. early in life as she pleases, and if she
marries before she is 40, she receives
a goodly sum to start housekeeping
with. If she remains unmarried, she
retains her bank account and at 50
begins to reoeive a regular annuity.
If a woman deoides to marry after
reaohing 40, she gets her money back
on demand.
The waste wood heap oontinuos to
diminish and pass away. A Massa
chusetts manufacturer of brushes
reoently made a disoovery in Maine
whiob supplied him with material
exaotly suited to his purpose. He
went to the Piue Tree State to buy
wood for tbe backs of hair brushes
and the handlos of shaving brushes,
and obauoed to visit the yards of a
spool' maker who was using white
biroh. The spool man took the white
part of tbe wood ouly, and was throw
ing away the red hoaits. Thousands
of ootds have boon burned or dumped
iu tbe lake to be rid of it. The red
hearts were exaotly what tho brush
maker wanted, and at little more
tban tbe expense of freight he suppli
ed his f aotory. This is typical of the
trend of manufacturing. Waste of
wood is still great, but it is decreas
ing. What one factory can not use,
another turns to profit.
That not all or even most of the
ingenuity of man is directed to tbe
invention of dreadnaughts and death
dealing engines of war we are con
stantly having gratifying proof. Very
reoently two great engineering feat!
constructed for the benefit of mankind
have caused wide spread interest.
One is tbe great Gunnison tunnel by
wbioh an immense area of arid soil
iu Colorado will be irrigated end
thereby transformed into a land of
plenty. Tbe other is the vast break
water at Galveston by wbioh tbe
inhabitants of that city have so lately
been saved a repetition of the terrible
disaster of 1900.
This is tne time of the year when
tbe wide-awake merchant is hustling
for trade. There is not an idle man in
the country, the teams are all busy
and harvesting will soon be drawing
to a olose. This means that there
will be cash in circulation and that
the mau who offers inducements will
get it. By inducements we might
add that tbe right kind of goods at
tbe right prices will bring tbe trade
and the best way to acquaint tbe pub
lic with these things is through tbe
medium of printer's ink.
Efforts are being made to have tbe
Denver Council secure ILe Jeffries
Jobnson prize fight. One member
asserts that it has more impoitant
matters to consider tban the promo
tion of prize fights, but tbe promotor
insists that be is siaoere in bis state
ment that it will benefit tho city and
has made tbe council give him attention.
The United States has been singu
larly backward in claiming its share
of South Amerioan trade. Our manu
facturers have not realized that
Buenos Ayres with its 1,150,000 in
habitants has a larger population tban
any city in the Latin countries of
Europe and Bio with 800,000 people is
not far behind.
In New York a mau shot at another,
tbe bullet passing tbrougb both oheeks
but lie will not be prosecuted beoause
the ball removed an aching tooth
which bad been bothering the injured
mau. It is safe to bet thut be will
not have the next aohing tooth remov
ed in this fashion.
Luther Burbank, long kuown as tbe
wizard of the botanical kingdom, is
now branded by the Pasadena Gar
deners' association as a nature fakor.
But iu India a wizard is called a fakir
so it comes around to tbe same title
after all.
Commercialism and art do not seem
to jiba very well. Penny iu the slot
maohines will uot take the new Lin
coln pennies as they are too tbiok.
And yet the pennies were hailed as
triumphs of art. So were the St.
Gaudens gold pieces.
Shipping corn to tbe United States
from the Orient seems almost like
carrying coals to Newcastle, but re
ports fiom Seattle show that it is be
ing doue.
It is almost a question whether it
is not better to endure the rheumatio
pains rather tb.au tbe stings of the
bees as did tbe California man.

After several years coast lumbermen
have succeeded in making tbe railroad
companies accept their weight of lum
ber instead' of weighing it when it
reaches its destination. They object
to paying for tbe rain and snow which
falls euroute.
If you must swing the hammer, use j
it to drive nails and help build up,
not to destroy and tear down.
