Skinned, Skunned, and Trounced By
Athena's Clever Shamrocks At
thejyiercv of La Brasche.
Well, it wag awful.
It baa been many a day since the
Pendleton Indians received sucb a
downright, heartless scalping at the
bands of Athena ball players, and you
will have to go back to the days of the
Yellow Kids, when they usedMo make
a monkey of Bob Brown," now manag
er of the Spokane League team to find
anything to equal Sunday's slaughter.
And it was all done in seven innings,
too.
Hully gee, bnt it was sweet to see
the Athena bnnoh fplay around the
Pendleton contingent, and the score
ft to J, repaid the crowd for its long
wait on the late train.
La Brasobe, who was on the mound
for the Sbamiooksrhad everything to
offer, and the warmweatber called on
the sturdy youngster to givo 'em all
he had, and he did it so smooth and
5. maobine like' that he had the Indian
sluggers nibbling' at all sorts of wide
shoots, quick breaks and sizziag pan-
splitters. The Peudieton tatters were
completely at bis meroy at every stage
of the game, and their only run came
in the fifth when the first Injin up
sent a sizzler at La Brasobe, wbicb
caromed off his finger tips, took third
on a passed ball and scored on Niles'
overthrow to Strauss.
The zest of it was all Athena.
Strauss did some, clever base running
and played first a la Gartano. Miles
at short did some clever work and
"Happy" was there with the goods
behind the bat. Tbe waim weather
brought tbe kinks out of tbe boys and
tbey all played with ginger.
Dickenson for Pendleton got off bad
in tbe first inning and never recovered
himself. Strauss smashed the first
ball for a single, stole 2nd and 3rd and
scored on Happy's single. In tbe third
after La Brasche and Miles had been
retired Strauss drew a 2-bagger, went
to third on an overthrow and brought
in tbe second rnn when Happy stung
tbe ball for a double wbiob he tried
to stretch into a 3-bagger by cutting
second base.
It was ducks for the Sbamrooks in
tbe fifth and sixth. La Brasobu fann
ed. Miles biffed a long fly square into
tbe bands of tbe left gardener, who
muffed it. Tbe little sbotstop plung
ed on to second, tbe ball reaching the
baseman at tbe same time but was
knocked from bis hands by Miles who
slid in. He stole 3rd and scored on
Happy's saotiQue. Strauss was safe
on Strand's slow throw, stole 2nd and
