    FULTON WILLJT ACCEPT
Ex-Senator Intimates That He Does
Not Want Chinese Post.
Ex-United States Senator Chailes
VV. Fulton has reaohed Portland from
Washington and is considering f utare
plans. The senator would not disooss
the probability of his accepting the
ambassadorship to China, wbioli has
been offered him by President Taft.
"I will have to announce my decis
ion within a 'snort time," he said "but
I do not consider that it would be
courteous for me to say what that de
cision would be nntil after I bad noti
fied the president of my inteotion. I
am to make my deoision within 10
days from the time tne president ten
dered the position to me, and I will do
so, but until I have notified him I can
make no statement as to my plans."
"It is my intention to locate in Port
laud and practice law," the senator
said. "Provided, of course, that I
deoide not to aooept the appointment
tendered me," he added. "More than
a year ago I said that it was my in
tention to move to Porltand and be
gin again to piok up my law praotioe,
necessarily negleoed during my servioe
iu the senate. That is still my intention."
.Foither than that the senator
would not discuss his plans for the
fqture.
From many friends, however, the
consensus of opinion is gleaned that
the senator has no iuteutiou of accept
ing the appointment. He has long
ago deoided to move to Portland. They
'Contend, and the appointment has no
advantage to him. These friends
argue that should be accept the ap
pointment he would at its expiration
be in the same relative condition, as to
biS personal interests there, as be is at
the present time, with the added dis
advantage that he would be several
years older. It is to his interest, the
prophets contend, for him to remain
in Poitland and build np his personal
business.
Senator Fulton bad nothing to say
regarding the federal judgeship.
"I am satisfied with the outcome,"
was the only lemark he made.
It. is t be senator's plau to open a
main office in Portland aud move his
residence there. He will at the same
time continue bis Astoria office, leav
ing bis brother (3. C. Fulton, in charge
there. It is believed that tbe senator
will have opened bisjnew offloe in Port
land by May 1.

The Journey.
A little work, a little sweating, a
few brief, flying years; a little Joy, a
little fretting, some smiles and then
some tears; a little resting In the shad
ow, a struggle to the height, a futile
search for Eldorado and then we say
goofi night. Some moiling In the strife
and clangor; some years in doubt and
debt; some word's we spoke in foolish
angsr that we would fain forget; some
cheery words we said unthinking that
made a sad heart light; the banquet,
with its feast and drinking and then
we say good night. Some questioning
of creeds and theories and 'judgment
of the dead, while God, who never
sleeps or wearies, is watching over
head; some little laughing and some
sighing; some sorrow, some delight; a
little music for the dying and then
we say good night "Walt Mason In Em

Syringo Bearing Firemen.
A studious reman looked up from
his book.
"In place of all these here electric
engines, automatic chutes and so on,"
he said, "the only instrument they had
to fight fire with in the seventeenth
century was the syringe. Under the
roof of every building that they
thought worth saving like cathedrals
and such there were big tanks to catch
the rainwater, and beside each tank
hung a syringe a yard long. Then
when a fire came squirt, squirt, they
went with their syringes, and the
building quickly burned down to the
ground." New Orleans Times-Democrat.
One en the Court Jester.
Timon of Athens had Just been mar
ried. As he wafted down the aisle of
the chapel with his bride the court
Jester cried:
"Walt, Tlmon. I would have a word
with you."
The misanthrope turned. Here was
the one chance of his life for a quip.
"Tlmon tied waits for no man," he
said. "There, now; I'm square with
you." And he drifted out the portal.
