near Pullman this week, visiting
friends. Mrs. Bannister informs the
Press that the house roeently burned
in toat neighborhood, repcr ed to have

property of another Herman Curtis,
and not the H. H. Curtis well known
here. This is gratifying to his friends
who sympathized with Mr. and Mrs.
Curtis in tbeir supposed loss.

A large number of people attended
the educational congress at Whitman
college this week. One of the prin
cipal events was tbe action of the
board of overseers in adopting a new
constitution whiob changes tbe school
from one of Conrgegational denomi
nation to non sectarian.
Mr. John Lewtas, a traveling lec
turer and writer, gave a lecture iu the
MetbodiBt church Wednesday night
which was greatly appreciated by the
small audieaoe present. Tbe eu b jeot
was "What I saw in Syria, Turkey,
the Holy Land and Egypt." and was
illustrated with stereoptioon views.
Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Colbern left
Monday for tbeir winter's sojourn in
California. They will visit various
cities on the way south, including Sac
ramento, San Diego, Long Beaob and
Los Angeles, staying several days in
eaob plaoe. They will probably spend
the greater part of the winter at Long
Beaob.
W Christmas is already being planned
for by the ohurohes' and Sunday
schools, and will be observed witb old
time enthusiasm at all three of tbe
ohurohes. Programs are being ar
ranged and rehearsals are under way.
The Christian church choir are ar
ranging a cantata which will be given,
in the chuioh some time during tbe
holidays. !
Mr. and Mrs. a! B. MoEwen Were
in
Pendleton Tuesday, where the in-
jury to Miss Jessie MoEwen 's foot was
examined uuder tbe x-ray. - The young
lady several weeks ago suffered a se
vere sprain, since which time she can
soaroely bear her weight on the injured
foot. ' Nothing developed under the
x-ray that will be of assistance in
treating the case.
Charlie Gerking, the popular young
farmer who witb his brother, George,
farms a large area of land neat Helix,
left Tuesday for Taooma, where he
will spend the winter. It is rumored
that when Charlie returns in the
spring he will be accompanied by . his
bride,, a young lady, formerly-well-known
in Athena, but now living in
the Sound oity. '
Mr. and Mrs. 0. A. Reeder and little
daughter will leave tbe first of next
week for tbeir new home in Taooma,
where they will reside in tbe future,
Mr. Reeder already being owner of
two or three residences there. This
popular young couple will be greatly
missed in Athena, where they have
both grown from childhood. The best.
wishes of all go witb them to tbeir
new home.
Frank Smith, brother of 0. R. & N.
Agent M. E. Smith, mention of whose
illness was made in last week's Press
died at a hospital in The Dalles Satur
day. Tbe death is particularly sad, in
view of the faot that tbe deceased was
on his way to visit at tbe borne of bis
brother, when he was striokeu witb
hemorrbage of tbe brain. He took
siok at Biggs, and was taken to Tbe
Dalles. His home was in tbe east and
he had reoeniiy aooompanied a daugh
ter to San Francisco. Mr. E. M.
Smith and daughter, Norma, went to
Tbe Dalles Sunday.
A visitor to the primary department
of the public sohool yesterday, on reg
istering in the visitors' book, was con
fronted with a page wholly blank ex
cept for one lone name, that of a min
ister wbo has no obild in the school.:

and interested little faces, the wonder

ingly have so much interest in the
matter, should never, during all the
past three months, have onoe visited

Mr. and Mrs. Gibson, of Walla
Walla have been in tbe city ; tbe ;past
week. Mr. Gibson bought tip a Oar
load of hogs which yesterday he ship
ped to Seattle, and bis wife remained
a guest of ber cousin, Mrs. A. A. Foss,
who will accompany her home for
Thanksgiving week.
