This is what it bas come to. Hear
what tbe Weston colonel bos to eay:J
"It will be like losing a tooth or lopping
off an ear, but nevorthelese tbe Leader
is evidently doomed to part with a
nomter of old and valued sutmoiibers.
These are people who pay every fall as
regularly as tbe seasou comes, but do
uot pay iu advance and cannot under
stand tbe reason for doing so, kuowing
themselves to be as good as wheat.
From their standpoint they are right;
from outs, wrong. We can see where
the credit system has lost us $250 a
year tor 13 years, oran aggregate of
more than $3000. We iutend to tolor
ute no more of it if we lose every sub
scriber on our books and have to start
ouew. As a matter of faot, however,
350 subscribers have already paid in ad
vanno, and enough more are sate to
rospoud to the notioos sent out this
week to render our new system a grat
ifying success. We want to be certain
in future tbat a subscriber wants the
paper it's only a small oouutry
weekly, anyway, and quite humble and
modest. If a patron doesn't want tbe
paper budly enough to pay for it iu
advance we are perforce oompelled
to part with him. By the 1st of No
vember the Loirdoi will not have a
single delinquent subscriber on its
books, and it will be blessed with as
clean and satisfactory a subscription
list as Buy country papei iii Oregon.

It ttioro is one thing of moreiutnrost

in this country it is the cost of living.
The publio knows that trusts are

parts of tbe country. Tbe complaints
Ly householders from time to time
tbat prices for tbe uauessanes of life
were unwarrantably high are fully
borne out in an official report just pub
lished by tbe national bureau ot labor.
This report deals with tbe retail prices
for food in tbe years 1890 to 1907 in
clusive, and tbe statistics cover tbe re
tail prices of 30 staple food commodi
ties as sold in 68 localities in tbe Unit
ed States by 1.011 dealers.
Tbe predicted failure of crops in the
Inland Empire this year was itself
tbe failure. The crops wero not
"bumper," weie somewhat short of
tbe normal, iu some localities were
light; but oa the wholo tbe harvest is
large, and tbe prices are such tbat tbe
harvest of gold will be perhaps even
greater than tbe average. Tbe Spo
kane Spokesman-Reviow estimates a
total crop of grain for eastern Wash
ington, eastern Oregou and tbe Pan
handle of Idaho of 60.000,000, bu
shels, and that tbe total expense of
harvesting it was $6,000,000, or only
10 cents a bushel. Supposing tbat all
the other expenses of production of
courso only a iougb estimate can be
made are 20 cents a bushel more, and
tbe average price received, with
wheat at 75 cents preponderating, is
65 cents a bushel, there is a net total
profit of $21,000'000 on grain alone for
tbat region. This is perhaps $25
apieoo for evory human being in all
that region. So, though the wheat
harvest was light as oompared with
last year, the farmers of the inland
empire as a whole will not suffer from
poverty or privation until another and
a greater harvest comes around.
An exobauge says Riley didn't write
this: "An humble boy with a shin
ing pail went merrily singing down
the dale, to where the cow with the
brindlo tail, on clover her palate did
regn e. A bumble bee did gaily sail,
far over tbe soft and shadowy dale, to
whore the boy with the shiuing pail
was milking tbe cow with tbe brindle
tail. Tbe bee lit on tbe cows left ear,
ber beels flew up in the atmosphere,
and thru tbe leaves of a chestnut tree
the boy soared into eternity."
Mr. Ilarriman is going to do a good
deal of building in Oregou, no doubt;
ho can hold off no louger through
Central Oregon, to Tillamook, to Ccos
Bay. St. Paul railroad officials nro
looking over tbo Otegou field with a

Hill bas extensive plans for tbe inva

Then get good wagon roads also; sub
divide the large farms; practice in
tensive farming; care well for the aoil
and make It yield its beat without ex
hausting it, and Oregon will rapidly
double and treble its population, and
begin to become tbe truly great state
for whiob natnre designed it.
Nearly 3,000 women from churches,
clubs and societies, with 200 girl fltn
dents from tbe University of Wash.,
swept Seattle, Saturday in a whirlwind
campaign in selling shipping tags
bearing tbe name of the organized
charities at 10 cents each. Tbe sale
netted $12,000 second only to New
York City for tbe year. The charity
organization society proposes to spend
this money not only in feeding tbe poor
and in affording tentative relief, but
to start them iu small lines of business
whereby they may tecome self sup
porting. Tbe plan was devised by Leo
Kohn, one of tbe greatest altruists on
tbe coast and present superintendent
of tbe charity organization society,
who bas already given away a fortune
to aid tbe poor.
Sooial workers in Chioago are stirred
up over tbe question of providing for
tbe 10,000 public school children wbo
in an official report to tbe board of
education are reported as "habitually
hungry," insufficiently olad and phys
ically unfit to attend school. The
mayor announced be would endeavor
to induce tbe city council to give im
mediate financial aid.
The republican leaders pretend they
favor a tariff sufficient only to com
pensate factories for tbe difference
between labor cost in America and
abroad, but tbe faot is that tbe repub
lican tariff is more than sufficient to
pay the whole labor cost. On steel
products the labor costs fifteen per
cent and tbe tariff is tbirty-two per
oent.
A hole 600 feet deep and half a mile

might be utilized as a last resting'place

and then distributed 3,000 boxes of
candy to tbe school children.
