BRYA WANTS PROOF
Asks President Roosevelt to Furnish
Evidence Against Haskell
in Bribery Matter.
William J. Bryan Tuesday demand
ed t bat President Roosevelt prove bis
charge tbat Haskell was oonnected
with the Standard Oil company an d
that tbe Standard Oil Was baok of the
present Bryan campaign.
Tbe demand was made in a telegram
addressed to tbe chief executive and
came as a result of Roosevelt's state
ment tbat Taft'a defeat would only
bring a lasting satisfaction to lot one
set of men who, as shown in the cor
respondence published by Hearst, were
Foraker, tbe opponent of Taft within
bis own paity, and who are now be
hind Governor Haskell and bis asso
ciates, tbe opponents of Taft and tbe
opposite party.
Bryan's telegram is worded court
eously, bnt can bardly be ignored by
tbe president, or considered other thau
as a oballeuge. He says:
"In a statement given oat by yon,
yon endorse the charges against Gov
ernor Haskell, to tbe effect. tbat he
was onoe employed by tbe Standard
Oil company in oonneotiou with an
attempt to bribe Attorney General Mo
uett of Ohio to dismiss a suit pending
against tbat company.
"In endorsing this charge jou attack
tbe democratic paity. saying tbat Has
kell stands bigb in tbe couuoils of
Bryau.
"This ia a charge so eeiioug tbat I
cannot allow it to pass nnnotiood.
"Mr. Haskell demands an investiga
tion now and agrees with yon tbat if
be is guilty be is unfit to be oonnected
wih .the demooratio party.
"I tbink yon will agree vitn me
..bat if be is innocent be deserves to
be exonerated from so damning an
aoonsation.
"Yon add tbat the pnblioatiou of
this correspondence has not merely
justified in striking fashion tbe action
of the preseut administration, but tbat
it also oasts a curious sidelight ou tbe
attacks upon the administration in tbe
Denver convention and in Mr. Bryan's
campaign, as tbe selection of Mr. Has
kell as chairman of tbe resolutions
committee at Denver and also as treas
urer of the national committee bad
my approval and endorsement.
"For this reason I feel it my duty
to demand an immediate investigation
of the charge which is endorsed by the
ptesidnutof tbe United Statos, as one
in your bigb position as well as your
souse of justioe would prevent yonr
sanctioning any snob charge if not
proven.
"I respectfully request you to fur
nish wbut proof you possess or if you
have none, request tbat you indioate
tbe method in wbioh tbe trnth may
be ascertained."
Roosevelt's Answer.
In ausweriug Bryan, President
Roosevelt grills the leader of tbe dem
ooratio party for standing on a plat
form which be assumes to be drawn
by Haskell, who is now treasurer of
the demooratio National committee;
alloges that Haskell was omnooted
with Standard Oil interests; voted
against tbe obild labor bill and reit
eiates tbe fact that be was defendant
in suits brougb by tbe government in
Oklahoma to prevent the Creek In-

"I put Taft'a deeds again your
words. I ask tbat Taft be judged by
all bis deeds for be wished none of
them forgotten. I ask you be judged
botb by the words you wish remem

First Passenger Train Bears Excursicn
Into Joseph's Land.
Tbe opening of tbe new extension of
tbe O. R. & N., railroad into (be
Wallowa oountry was elaborately cel
ebrated Sunday. A special excursion
train from LaUrande carrying several
hundred people arrived at tbe town of
Wallowa at 1 o'clock and was tbe first
passenger tiain to enter tbe country
for wbioh Chief Joseph made such a
determined .fight in tbe late seventies.
People from every section of Wallowa
county were present and enjoyed tbe
hospitality of tbe citizens of tbe oity
of Wallowa, tbe present terminus of
tbe road. There were also present
representatives of the various Portland
and Spokane newspapers. Tbe com
mercial associations of Portland were
also represented by prominent business
men.
To reach tbis wonderful country tbe
road just opened traverses a canyon,
which for scenic beauty and grandeur
is bardly surpassed by tbe far-famed
Colorado. Ihe line bas been built
from Elgin down tbe Grand Ronde
river to its junction with the Wallowa.
Hogging olose to the lapping rapids
of the turbulent stream as it pours its
limpid waters from tbe smiling valley
beyood, tbe roadbed is oftentimes
hewn ont of solid rock, crosses and
reorosses tbe river to prevent tunnel
ing. It was tbe overcoming of this
barrier of nature that long deterred
Harriman from annexing tbe wealth of
tbe Wallowa valley
Wallowa City, tbe present terminus
of tbe road, is not to enjoy tbat pres
tige long. A track laving crew is con
tinuing on up the valley at tbe rate of
a mile a day and will be in Enterprise
with a special train service inaugurat
ed after Ootober 1, and Joseph, tbe
final terminns of tbe road, will be
reaobed before snow flies.
