Tbe report ou industrial couditioua
from tbe correspondents of tbe Com
meroial National bank of Cbioago
locates tbe weak spot of tbe revival of
business iu tbelaok of railroud boyiug.
Ibis is reported in tbe lumber trado,
tu building und ooastrootiou trades
and io iron aod steel, a revival of
coufldenoe and business, bat "lack of
buying by railroads." In an extend
ed artiole ou tbe business situation tbe
Now York Commercial Bulletin con
cludes tbat tbe way (o restore ptosper
ity is to pay higher freight rates, bo-
oauso by everybody contributing in
tbis way liberally to tbe railroads they
will be enabled to buy iron, steel,
lumber and other materials, thus
placing men back at work and setting
tbo wheels of industry generally going.
Western people do not understand such
reasoning, bat Eastern trade and fin
ancial publications are hypnotized by
the railroads, whioh tbey regard as
distinct from all other industries, su
perior to ell others and entitled to spe
oial treatment as the "spoiled favor
ites" of commerce. If people will go
down into their pookets and chip in
and help tbe railroads, tbe railroads
will sot all other industrial wheels in
motion. But if tbe people bad so much
surplus cash as tbis, tbey would be
rr.aking very muob larger demands
tbuu they are making on all
tbese manufacturing industries, and
tbat would set the wheels iu motiou
aud would be prosperity.

cot being irrigated. More-important
etills its suggestive inqoiriesteojjin,
to show tbat we are wusliug our wat
er ways to, an alarming extent by not
using them' as we should. Perhaps
tbe greatest form of waste brought out
in tbe entire schedule is tbat relating
to water power.
The Natioual Conservation Commis
sioo has just made putlio the first of
its schedules on wbiob tbe inventory
of theoouutry's natural resources is
being oouduoted. Only a few of! tbe
schedules havi, as yet, boon given out,
but between tbe lines of these it is
plainly evident the Natioual Conser
vation Commission intends to hunt
down waste iu all its varied forms aud
to devise some menus to prevent it.
Tbis is apparent iu tbe general ho Lied
ulos as to each of the four sections ot
the Commission waters, forests, lands
aud minerals. For instauoe, tbe sche
dule relatiug to lands inquires into
watse by soil of erosion, which is the
washing away of tbo land. Tbat
sobedulo also suggests wasto through
"bad agricultural methods." Tbe
After gathering tbe opinions of
merchants all over toe Paciflo North
west ou tbe subject of tbe parcels post,
the West Coast trade comes to conclu
sion that a largo majority Utterly op
posed it; tbat a good many have been
lod to believe that some forms of par
cels post may be all right, and that a
few tli ink tbore should bo such a law.
Tbo latter, most of tbem, are actuated
by piide. Tbey believe they cau meet
any competition tbat is brought to
boar on tbem. Possibly they have not
teen touDbed by tbe blight which has
struck so severely elsewhere. Those
who think a modified parcels post
might not be so bad do not look ahead
to tbe days when, with tbe wedge en
tered, amendments and changes may
be made much more simply and easily.
A few years benco, according to Dr.
LJackson, every man who has uot had
bis appeudix removed, will be snbjeot
to appendicitis. But Dr. Woods
Hutchinson says tbat when tbe ave
rage man has passed the age of fiO he
bas no appeudix it has disappeared.
Still, tbis does not tend to reassure the
exceptional man.

Acooiding to a Texas paper, "some
people marry because they want a com
rade in arms." Many others marry
because tbey want a reliable commis

WASHINGTOVS MESSAGE.
Senator Aokeny's defeat m tbe di
rect primaries will elevate iu the na
tion's estimation the state of Washing
ton. It is crushing, and would have
been more crushing if Senator An
keuy's pleasing personality aud fine,
rugged reooid as pioneer and empire
builder bad uot blinded many voters
to bis grave faults in political life.
In his home oity of Walla Walla,
where Senator Ankeny has been known
for nearly half a century as a kind and
hospital neighbor, a jubt and upright
business mau and a pleasing, compan
louable associate, be received a vote
tbat must give him much gratification
in this hour of political oblivion
But when tbe smoke of conflict bas
cleared away, and the people of Walla
Walla bave time for quiet reflection,
many who voted for Senator Ankeny
will come to a quiet conviotiou that
his defeat was altogether just and
wholesome.
Far better had it been for Senator
Ankeny's plaoe in tbe history of Wash
ington and tbe Inland Empire if an
nnsettliug senatorial ambition had
never possessed him. Tbe qualities
tbat make a great and successful bank
er are seldom the qualitios tbat are es
sential to senatorial achievement.
Tbe toga is never becoming to men
like Senator Ankeny and W. A. Clark
of Montana, and Ibese do themselves
injustioe when tbey are induoed by
tbe flattery of friends or tbe persua
sion of political bangers-on to attempt
the cares, duties and indignities of
statesmanship.
Now tbat Senator Ankeny is defeat
ed, his politioal organization will
quick ly disintegrate. In spite of all
his resouroes of politioal patronage and
money, be has been beaten by an op
ponent of modest personal fortune.
Congressman Jones bas made a clean,
creditable fight for his senatorial hon
ors. His eleotion dignifies tbe state of
Washington. The news of his success
is good news to flash by eleotrio wire
to other states of the Union. Spokesman-Review.
