    PURE MILKTHEIR SLOGAN
Pendleton ia Shaken By War on
Diseased Herds.
Pendleton is being stirred from cen
ter to circumference by the agitation
started recently for a pnier milk sup
ply. It was started almost inadver
teutly by City Physioian Cole, who
duelared that a large percentage of
the dairy cows whiob supply Pendleton
witb milk are infected witb tubercu
losis and tbat tbe disease is transmigs
able from tbe bovine to tbe human.
As a result of this statement and tbe
agitation and crusade which is follow
ing in its wake the council will be ask
ed to pass an ordinance providing for
tbe inspection of all dairy beids, tbe
testa to bo made by the bureau of an
imal industry without expense to tbe
city or tbe owners of cattle, and for
the killing of all oows found to be in
fected. Tbe measure will also prescribe san
itary regulations, wbioh tbe dairymen
will observe. Among these will bo a
provision for the scalding of milk cans.
It will also provide that milk bottles
belonging to tbe dairies and uaod
generally by tbe public shall not be
loft at houses where thero are cases of
infectious diseases. An inspection of
stables and corrals will be ordered and
tbe methods used iu milkiug cows will
be investigated.
MACHINE WARNING OF FROST
Rings Bell When Mercury Falls to
Point Endangering Orchards.
Scientific fruit raising bus been de
liberately shoved into a new era by tbe
recent installation of tbo automatic
uleotrio frost foreteller in tbo larger
orchards of tbo Kenuewick iriigated
belt. New sets of agricultural and
horticultural rules have been arranged
by each farmer, who now sleeps tbe
sleep of tbe righteous, though tbe
mercury may drop to the zero mark
during a cold spell, without tbe slight
est fear that when he resumes daily
duties the following morning he will
Hnd bis crop blackenedjwith frost.
Tbe frost foreteller is an innocent
looking pieoo of apparatus ns it sits
idly under tho apple trees, but it has
a little thermometer firmly planted
amidships tbat never goes to sleep.
When the temperature starts a swift
slide toward tbe freezing mark, several

degrees on tbe safe aide thereof tbe
trusty tbermomoter begiDS to ring tbat
bell in tbe farmer's bed-room and
keeps on ringing it until be comes out
into tbe orchard and turns it off.
Scattered around here and there are
covered pots. Ihese pots are filled
witb crude petroleum, and once alarm
ed by the glass, tbe fruitgrower simply
goes rapidly from pot to pot with a
handful of matches, and it's all up
with Jack Frost. In a moment tbe
trees are enveloped iu a thick, black
smoke and tbo frnit crop is saved, tbe
tops go back on tbe pota and tbe fires
go out.
A frnit inspeotor says tbat orchards
thus supplied with smudge pota can be
kept eight degrees warmer than those
without them, and many have been
saved witb them where smudge-potless
ranches adjoining suffered total losses.
Smudge pots are nsed in many places.
Probably tbe Chinese invented them,
but a new era dawned witb tbe ap
pearance of tbe tbermo-electrio indi
cator which unfailingly gives tbe
warniug when to smudge.
Waitsburg Must Pay Tax.
Waitsbuig citizens must pay tho
county road and bridge tax, according
to a decision of tbe supreme court just
rendered iu tbe case of E. M. Dentou
against Walla Walla county, says tbe
Waitsburg Times. Ibis suit was
brought to eujoin tbe county from en
forcing tbe tax on tbe ground tbat tbe
city charter, granted years ago by tbe
legislature to Waitsburg, provided
tbat no comity tax for ioad or bridge
purposes should ever be levied on prop
rety in the city.

I consider Wine of Cardui superior
to any doctor's medicine I ersr nsed
and I know whereof I speak. I suf
fered for nine months with suppressed
menstruation whioh completely pros
trated me. Pains wonld shoot through
my back and sides and I would have
blinding headaches. My limbs wonld
swell up and I would (eel so weak 1
oould not stand up. I naturally felt
discouraged for I seemed to he beyond
trie help of physicians, but W ine of
Cardul came as a Ood-send to me. I
felt a change for the better within a
week. After nineteen days treatment
I menstruated without suffering the
agonies I usually did and soon became
regular and without pain. Wine of
Cardui is simply wonderful and I wish
that all suffering women knew of its
good qualities.

Periodical headaches tell of fe
male weakness. Wine of Cardui
cures permanently nineteen out of
every twenty cases of irregular
menses, bearing down pains or
any female weakness. If you are
discouraged and doctors have
failed, that is the best reason in
the world you should try Wine of
Cardui now. Remember that
headaches mean female weakness.
