- Chester . Caplinger, who has been
very . low with sickness it Weston for
some weeks, was yesterday brought to
Athena and from here was pnt on the
train in a stretcher, and taken to a
Portland hospital. ' The young man
was a student at the normal.
A yonng son of Alex' Johnson fell
fiom a tree into Pine Creek, and as a
result Dr. Sharp took twelve stitches
to olose up a wound in the boy's scalp.
It is quite probable that the boy would
have drowned had not bis father been
near by, aod rescued him from the
water

Mrs. Norman Heudryx died in Port
land reoently and was buried beside
the grave of her husband in the Wes
ton cemetery Snnday. Mis. Hendryx
was a former resident of Weston and
was the mother of Ed. Hendryx, a for
mer foreman of the Press, who is now
editor of the Granite Gem.

.Last Tuesday evening Dr.. Heislcy
was called to see Mr. MoCorkeJl whom
he found iu a oomatose state. The doc
tor remained with him during the
night and by morning the patient's
condition was much Improved. : Mr.
McCorkell's health , has been failing
for sometime. Later reports by phone
are that he is weak but , improving.
Mr. MoCorkell is the , postmaster at
Briggson.
The University of Oregon triumphed
over Whitman college in the intercol
legiate track meet held on Ankeny
field Wednesday afternoon, defeating
the looal institution 75 to 47 and
thereby winning the championship of
Oregon,, Washington, Idaho and Mon
tana. Oregon, has an exceptionally
strong team of track athletes and well
deserved to, win.

magazine is being circulated through
the mail, the name of whioh is "The
Modern Physician." This .magazine
clearly shows the modern way is not

Marshal Gholson had a couple; of
early morning visitors- today, i A.
dranken Indian and white, man, riding'
one horse were on-dress parade in the
north part of town. The white man,
who is said to be employed as a hotel
oook was deposited on the ground in
front of Marshal Gboison's - residenoe,
and the Indian left him" there refusing
to let him remount the horse. The
exhibition ended at the city jail,
where both jags were incarcerated.
DEATH : OF MRS. IRA LUNA.
Afliicted With Consumption and Snf-
- . fered Many Months.
Death relieved the sufferings of Mrs.
Ira Ijuna, nee Fern MoPherrin at 9:30
a. m. Wednesday May 13, 1908.
-.' Mrs. Luna had long been afflicted
with consumption, and not long ago
returned to Athena from her home in
Spokane. She constantly grew worse
after her return here, and shortly
took to her bed at the home of her
parents.
The fnneral was held yesterday af
ternoon from the Christian church
and was largely - attended. V. ' E.
Hoven; pastor of the Christian church,
conducted the funeral services.
Fern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank MoPherrin, was born in Taylor
county, Iowa, and at the time of her
death was aged 19 years, 11 months
and 4 days. Besides her husband, she
leaves to monrn ber loss, father, mo
ther. two sisters and four brothers.
Insane, He Leaps to Death.
James Wfaittington, a resident of
Baker . City,; committed suicide by
jumping from a stairway at the insane
asylum. He fell about 15 feet, striking
bis bead and shoulders upon a ooncrete
floor. Whittmgton was brought to
the asylum about nine months ago,
after he had made several attempts at
soioide at home.. He was abont 55
years old and leaves a wife and several
children.
