BIG DEAL IN SPUDS
D. B. Jarman Secures Seattle Buyer,
Who Will Ship 30 Carloads
of Mountain Potatoes.
The true worth of mountain potatoes
as compared with the thousands of
tons of tbe irrigated variety that finds
wey to market, has at last been recog
nized by a discerning buyer of shrewd
sagaoity and judgment
L. L. lies, is the name of tbe buyer
who has been looking for months for a
flret class quality of potatoes for tbe
Seattle market, and D. B. Jatmao,
tbe well known Athena and Weston'
merchant, is tbe man who has tbe
honor of bringing buyer and seller to
gether, and thereby establishing a per
manent market for future mountain
potato crops.
For several days,. Mr. Jarman has
been riding with Mr. lies, introducing
bim to potato raisers, and tbe result is
that the Seattle buyer has purohased
about 80 carloads, practically all tbat
remains of last year's crop at an ad
vance of from 2 to 3 per ton over
the price paid during the last month.
This big shipment is to be delivered
in Athena at once, orders for oars hav
ing been plaoed with tbe Nortnern
Paoiflo company at this point. This is
tbe largest shipment of potatoes ever
made from a point in the Inland Em
pire, except the record breaker of 50
carloads from North Yakima. Pre
vious to this big shipment, 15 carloads
have been shipped this season from
Athena, over the Northern Pacific.
Mr. lies says the mountain potatoes
is the stock be has always wanted,
and did not know of tbe superb quality
uutil be beoame interested through
Mr. Jarman's efforts. He says tbe
mountain ranobers are a splendid class
of people to transact business with,
and he says tbat hereafter they will
have a regular market for.their.nrn
duce, including their Yarge crops of
hay, for he is in a position to handle
all they have to sell, and he will pay
tbe highest prices possible.
Mr. lies is authority for tbe state
ment that 15 carloads of potatoes are
consumed each day in the traffioof tbe
Sound markets. Of this huge amount,
Seattle alone consumes 6 carloads, Ta
comu 4, tbe other 5 carloads being
distributed about equally iu surround
ing towns and cities.

Dudley's Hibernians Scalped Sunday
to the Tune of 15 to 4.
No, Susie dear, there is nothing in
a name a base ball name anyway.
Dean Dudley's orauk amateur ball
tossers were christened the "Sham
rooks" by an admiring fan, green suits
with red trimmings selected, and tbe
band bills announced tbat Walla
Walla was the particular team tbe
Irishmen wanted to gather at a wake.
Tbe wake was pulled off all right
all right and when tbe undertaker rang
up the last score it was the 15th one
for Walla Walla's side of tbe register,
while tbe Shamrooks totaled a 5 spot.
And it was a glorious day for base ball
too. No, Sue, it was not tbe name,
and no boodoo clung to tbe Athena
banner. Just one of those off days,
you know, when certain things happen
tbat cause players to resolve all sorts
of resolutions, and are afterwards found
camped on the diamond, practicing to
beat tbe band.
Every kid in tbe tunob has called
at tbe Press office and registered a
promise with the old man tbat it will
never happen again. And, Sue, it
wont.
The Athena opera bouse was deoo
rated and frisked up in green and red
Thursday night, and a large number
of young people attended a benefit ball,
given for the Shamrooks. An enjoyable
evening was spent by all present, tbe
music was good, and a tidy little sum
was netted the ball players. Tbe pro
ceeds will be used to pay for the new
suits.

Realistic Window Display.
Austin Foss, artistic window deco
rator, has employed a local stunt in
connection with a realistic fishing
scene in one of C. A. Barrett & Go's,
show windows. A miniature tent is
placed in the background, surrounded
by a green sward and in the foreground
likely images of three looal fishermen,
Plamondon, Boyd aud Kemp, recline
in suggestive, bibulous positions. A
small bottle of "booze" prominently
exhibited, emphasizes in a mute but
striking manner the brilliant and
original idea of tbe arhst. Boyd, tbe
real fisherman of the bunch, lies in
close proximity to the bottle, while
Plamondon has the appearance of hav
ing been unable to reaoh tbe tent door.
Kemp is laboriously supporting a tent
rope, and seemingly tbe rope is all that
be needs.
