GOVERNOR WILL DEPORT THEM
State . Insane Asylum Is Damping
Ground for Aliens.
A wholesale deportation of foreign
ers now confined in the state insane
asylum may follow an investigation
begun by Governor Chamberlain and
Superintendent Steinor about a month
ago. Tbe attention of tbe governor
was attracted to tbe matter by tbe ar
rival at tbe institution, at tbe time be
was making bis moutbly inspection,
of two Swedish sailors, who could not
speak a word of Euglisb. An inspec
tion was then made of tbe foreigners
confined and the startling faot was re
vealed that tbe majority of tbem bad
come to tbis country as sailors for the
first time and, immediately on landing,
bad to be taken into custody. This
made it appear to certain members of
tbe asylum commission as if there was
an attempt on tbe part of other nations
to ship tbeir insane to tbis country as
sailors witb the intention of unloading
tbem onto our institutions.
Tbe fate of three of those inmates
suspected of having been thrown onto
tbis stato for support, has already been
taken np witb tbe commissioner of im
migration and almost any day tbe
necessary papers will be prepared for
tbeir deportation.
