ATHENA. ORE.. MARCH 20 1908
Tbe last legislature of Oregon paused
a law reauiriuB the secretaiy of state
to send oat printed copies of the initi
ative measure before the people to every
voter in the state, thus Riving tbe state
printer work wbicb justly belongs to
tbe newspapers of tbe state. Before
tbe legislature passed tbis unreason
able measure, says tbe East Oregonian,
' tbe newspapers of tbe state printed
tbe initiative and referendum mea
snres and tbns tbe measures reached
tbe voters in an attractive and read
able form. Tbe cost to tbe state was
insignifJoaut, compared to tbe ser
vice rendered oy tbe newspapers.
With over 200 paprs in tbe state of
Oregon, every voter in tbe state could
be easily reached through tbis medi
um, but that the state printer's enor
moos income might be farther increas
ed, tbe legislature decided that the
newspapers of tbe state are no good
anyway, and so they were deprived of
tbis little mite of state advertising,
Tbe work of printing and distributing
100,000 copies of the initiative moos
ures before tbe people tbis year will
cost tbe taxpayers tbree times as much
as though tbe same work was perform
ed by the newspapers and tbe publicity
through the papers wonld have been
lnuoh greater than uuder the present
system.
Ve think tbe country merchant has
tho right idea about bis farmer cus
tomers. He knows that be dupeauds
upon them for trade and that tbey de
pond upon him for goods and a mar
ket. Tbis is mutual and tbe feeling
between tbe two classes should bo one
of friendship and good will. It is
mutual dependence, xit mere are
those who delight to stir up enmity be
tween tbe farmer and country mer
chant. Tbey do it from ulterior mo-
. . Uvea, but tbe farmer doesn't know it.
We "know of no remedy save to get as
close to the agriculturist as you can.
Talk with him, show him you are in
terested in his suooess, and make bim
see the true relationship between him
self and you. Oregon Tradesman.
Tbe awful tragedy, at the Colling
wood school near Cleveland, Ohio,
which cost tbe lives of 200 school
ooiidren, should be a warniog to
sobool boards throughout tbe entire
country. Every sobool building should
be provided with means of esoape in
case of fire, and school boards should
require teachers to have tbeir pupils
practioe fire drills regularly each week
Many a life could be saved by such
aotiou.
Another outrageous attack on tbe
vested interests. . In Detroit tbe name
of a millionaire merchant bas been
scratched from tbe society list, while
that of a woman who once was a clerk
hi his shop remains. If tbis thing
continues transfusion of penurious
members of old families to the veins
of clammy mushroom millionaires will
become a more popular operation than
appendicitis. -
Dr. Ma bie, editor of the : Outlook
suggests that instead of f'ld God We
Trust" being inscribed on American
coins the motto should be, "With God
We Deal." In that case there would
have to be a material change in tbe
methods of some of Our dealers.
The Eighth District Congressional
convention in Ohio, oalled to name a
oandidate to succeed Congressman Cole,
adjourned witbout having made
nomination, having taken 1011 ballots.
Tbey surely need tbe primary law in
Ohio.
Tbe drop in the prices of lumber
from 13.00 to 110.00 a thousand, ao
cording to tbe grades, will help tbe
builder this season. There are no re
grets along tbis line on tbe consumer's
part.
All efforts to break up tbe diamond
monopoly will be futile until the
pretly girls band together and solemnly
swear tbey 11 lusist on some other
gem iu tbe engagement ring.
Harriman has contributed 130,000
to the anti-rat crusade in San Fran
cisco. If he's as cood a rat catcher
as he is a Fish catcher the rodents
might as well give up.
The pi eviction is made that tbis ill
be a $900,000,000 congress. There's
nothing cheap about it, that's sure,
except some of tbe members.
About tbe time Roosevelt welcomed
tbe Mothers' congress he could have
bad anything on earth, if women could
only vote.
Although it is tbe fashion to belittle
some of the meu who have filled tbe
office ot President, it is well to re
member what Congressman John Sharp
Williams said iu Vioksburg the other
day, nt a reoeption in honor of Presi
dent Roosevelt. . Tbe Deuiooratio kad-
er remarked that "you oanuot, iu tbe
1.5 . . .
nistory oi any country, auoieut or
'uioduru, find a succession of twenty-
11 vo kings, emperors, or even prime
miuisters, that equals iu intelligence,
culture, courage or character of tho
twenty-five Presidents of tbis great
republic from Washington to Roose
velt."
Harry Orohard just bad to plead
guilty or else return the publishers'

fessions.

WHAT FASHION SAYS.

ino state university snouni be a
souroo of pride to every citizen of
Oregon. The idea that it is maintain

is absurd in tbe extreme. Tbe State

In the oboioe ot color for the
spring of 1008, Fashion seoms less ca
pacious and more utilitarian than for
many a long time," says Grace Mar
garet Gould in ber fashion talk in tbe
March number of tbe Woman's Home
Compauion. "It was blue last fall.
and it's to be blue again this spring
blue, however, in many fascinating
shades, such as oauard blue, which
is duck blue, a very lovely, delicate
shade. Copenhagen blue continues
iu fashionable favor, and navy blue
aud royal blue for everydaywear are
looked upon as reliable, cood stvle
colors. Next to the blues comes the
browns. A beaver shade of brown
is very fashionable, and eo are tbe
russets and a citron shade. Chamois
color will be used more than ever, and
tbe bread aud biscuit tints. Tau is a
good color to choose for a gown from
tbe fashion standpoint, and cream is
also tbe mode. A few shades of green
will be worn, and a few grays on the
mole order."
In London tbe Oregon Yellow New
town Pippin apple takes front rauk in
tbe fruit sales. These apples are in
tetter demand, tbe price is tbree times
as high as tbe Eastern growu product
and over twice as high as apples grown
any where else in tbe world. Oregon
apples are being shipped to Vladivo
stok, Russia aud are bringing iu this
foreign market 7.50 per box.

THe Emerson Alfalfa
J Renovator or Harrow
The machine shows for itself what it will do to weedv
or turf-bound meadows, and when put into the alfalfa
field- that has been seeded two years or longer, the effect
is marvelous. The teeth of the harrow not only destroy
the weeds, but split up the alfalfa stools, thoroughly
loosening the soil for a depth of three to six inches. The
result is a decided increase in yield from the very start.
