Mrs. Ira Luna is down from Spo

The first assignment of the new
stook of paints and oils for tbe Kid
der paint store arrived Saturday.
Grass is said to be starting nicely on
the range, and stook will be removed
from winter quarters about April 1.
X Plowing is in full blast on tbe farms
in this vioinity and everywhere in tbe
country farm work is forging ahead.
F. S. Le Grow has purchased of
Mollie Boby 80 aores of reservation
wheat land. Consideration not stated.
Mrs. E. R. Cox will open a millinery
store in this city and at present is in
Portland, trimming and selecting

street property, was in the oity yester
day from Tacoma. It la said that he
desires to sell his property in this city.
Glen MoAlexandra has been suffer
ing from an attack of pneumonia tbe
last week, but has made a remarkable
recovery and will soon be as well as
ever.
Mr. and Mrs. Chester Conniok have
arrived from Tacoma, and will prob
ably remain here,' Mr. Conniok having
accepted a position in tbe Preston-Par-ton
mill.
Mrs. Lillie Miller announoes tbe
grand opening of her spring millinery
for today and tomorrow. Some stun

Bev. Beeves of Weston came to
Athena to consult Drs. Heisley about
his son. Bev. Beeves, with others, is
anxious that the doctor open a branch

Ed Bush has leased the farm of bis
mother, west of town, and will proceed
to farm tbe same. With his family,
be'has moved from Wilbur, Wash.,
and taken possession.
Mrs. B. D. demons entertained
the Baptist missionary eooiety yester
day. Refresnments were served, and
pleasant and profitatle afternoon
passed by the ladies.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas went
over to Walla Walla Tuesday, Mr.
Douglas returning tbe next day. Mrs.
Douglas will remain with friends in
that oity for several days.
Mr. and Mrs. Z. F. Lookwood, with
their son, Zepb, and wife, of Portland,
drove out to visit Helix friends Wed
nesday. Little Kohler Betts was also
an honored member of the party.
Mrs. Lizeie Jones leaves today for
Pilot Bock and Echo, where she will
display a stook Of spring hats. Mrs.
Jones also has a stook of millinery at
Adams, whioh is under the manage
ment of Mrs. Frank Baker, of that oity.
C. H. Sherman has decided to en
gage in the Meat Market business in
Pendleton. With this object in view,
he has purchased tbe Beinhold Harras
shop in that oity. It is said that Harras
will conduct the Sherman shop in this
city.
Mrs. Anna Porter, who has been
visiting here and at Weston for some
weeks, left Tuesday for her home at
Centralis, Wash. She leaves her sis
ter, Mrs. J. B. King, of Weston, in
better health than when she arrived
here.
Mrs. Lillian Dobson has aooepted a
sohool on the Weston mocntain, in
the MoDaniel neighborhood, and will
begin teaohing on April 6tb. Mrs.
Dobson may make a short visit to her
parents in Portlaud before beginning
her school.
The twin babies of Mr. and Mrs.
Dean Gerking are both ill with pueu-
monia, and the life of one of tbe little
ones was despaired of for several days.
It is not known yet whether it will
survive, though Dr. Sharp is in con
stant attendance.
Two girl operators in tbe Pendleton
telephone offloe were attacked with
soarlet fever and diphtheria Wednes
day. The office was closed from 10
o'clock Wednesday night until 7
o'olook yesterday morning so that tbe
plaoe could be fumigated.
'The annual dehorning process took
plaoe this week at tbe Barrett ranch
north of town. A number of oattle
were relieved of the!? horns, which is
a painful though necessary operation
when the Stock is to be fed in olose
quarters daring the winter season.
AQnill Gerking, a popular boy of tbe
old time Athena, passed through town
yesterday from his home in northern
Washington, on his way to Weiser,
Idaho, where he has been called to the
bedside of bis father, J. E. L. Ger
king, who is said to be on his death
bed. S. F. Wilson, attorney for H. O.
Wortbington attached a team, tbe
property of Thomas Bergevin, for tbe
purpose of recovering $150 due on a
promissory note. Bergevin has com
menced suit against sheriff Taylor for
tbe reoovery of tbe team and $50 dam
ages.
K Dog tax and alley cleaning time has
arrived In many parts of town tbe

that cleaning up days inspire, and
your dog will have to be decorated
with a 1908 license badge or Marshal
Gholson will make a dog-gone good dog
of him.
Mrs. Jacob Bloch passed through
Tuesday on tbe Spokane train, on her
way home from a visit with relatives
in Union. Several old Athena friends
met her and visited a few minutes at
tbe train. Owing to sickness at home,
Mrs. Bloch was unable to stop for a
visit here.
