METALS' EFFECT OJT M101c03.
JlsesM Germa Die Qoleklr Whn
Placed Upon Copper Coin.
Curious, indeed. Is the effect of met
als upon microbes. An article In Fuer
Alle Welt sums up the experiments go
ing on In several laboratories. As
cording to Uffelman, who smeared the
surfaces of copper, coins with liquified
jelly cultures of c'i lera bacilli, the lat
ter were destroyed la seventeen min
utes; while on a brass coin they were
alive for thirty hours, nut dead after
sixty. Francks inoculated a tube of
inelted Jelly with partievlar microbes,
md pouring the contents out on h
Uerlllzed glass plate, laid bits of the
total under examination on the Jelly
hile it was still soft
This latter Investigator found that h
the metal has an Inhibitory action on
the microbes, then a clear zone is left
around, the metal after the colonies
have developed In the other parts of
the Jelly. The width of this ione va
ried very considerably with different
organisms, as well as with different
metals. Thus carefully purified bits of
silver produced in the case of cholera
bacilli a clear zone 5 millimeters broad.
In the case of typhoid bacilli a zone of
about one millimeter,, while with the
closely allied colon bacilli a zone of
about Ave millimeters was produced.
In the case of purified gold no lnhlbl
tlons was observed with these several
bacilli. Freshly 'glowed' gold had In
variably no Inhibition. Pure nickel,
platinum wire and platinum Slack, alu
minum, silicon and niobium, ngnln, also
failed to give any reaction with most
)f the microbes examined.
Throughout the Investigation It was
found that those metals that are reslst
ent toward chemical reagents In gen
eral failed to produce any effect on mi
crobes; while on the other hand, those
metals which are readily attacked by
chemical reagents all exhibit a marked
Inhibitory- action upon the growth of
bacteria. The length of time It was
necessary to leave the metals In con
tact with the jelly to produce an effect
on the microbes present, was tied with
brass, copper, cadmium and zinc on
colon bacilli. The clear space extend
ed over three millimeters. j
Similar results were obtained with !
zinc. With brass it required tiuSe to
produce a noticeable effect. And the
fime was true with copper.

Physicians Recommend Castoria
" ASTORIA has metrith pronounced favor on the part of physicians, pharma-
ceutical societies and medical authorities. It is used by physicians with
results most'graiiryiriS. The extended use of Castoria is unquestionably tho
result of three facts: f4fThe indisputable evidence that it is harmless:
Second That it not only allays stomach pains and quiets the nerves, but assimi
lates the food: Third--It is an agreeable and perfect substitute for Castor Oil
It is absolutely safe. It does not contain any Opium, Morphine, or ether narcotic
and doe3 not stupefy. It is unlike Soothing Syrups, Bateman's Drops, Godfrey's
Cordial, etc. This is a good deal for a Medical Journal to say. Our duty, how
ever, is to expose danger and record the means of advancing health. The day
for poisoning innocent children through greed or ignorance ought to end. To
our knowledge, Castoria is a remedy which produces composure and health, by
regulating fie system not by stupefying it and our readers are entitled to
the information. Hall's Journal of Health,

Dr. William Belmont, of Cleveland, Ohio, says: "Your Castoria stands

Dr. J. H. Taft, of Brooklyn, N. T Bays: "I have used your Castoria and

troubles. I am aware that there are imitations in the Held, but I always
see that my patients get Fletcher's."
Dr.Wm. J.McCrann, of Omaha, Neb., says: "As the father of thirteen
children I certainly know something about your great medicine, and aside
from my own family experience I have in my years of practice found Ca
torla a popular and efficient remedy In almost every home."
Dr. J. R. Clausen, of Philadelphia, Pa., says: "The name that your Ca
toria has made for Itself In the tens of thousands of homes hlessed by the
presence of children, scarcely needs to be supplemented by the endorse
ment of the medical profession, but I, for one, most heartily endorse It and
believe It an excellent remedy."
Dr. R. M. Ward, of Kansas City, Mo., says: "Physicians generally do not
prescribe proprietary preparations, but In the case of Castoria my experi

to be a thoroughly reliable remedy for children's complaints. Any physi

SKIM DISEASES
HUMORS IN THE BLOOD
When the blood is pure, fresh and healthy, the ehin will be soft, smooti
and free from blemishes, but when some acid humor takes root ia the circu
lation its presence is manifested by a skin eruption or disease. These
humors get into the blood, generally because of a:i inactive or sluggish
condition of the members of the body -whose duty it h to collect and carry
off the waste and refuse matter of the system. This unhealthy matter is left
to sour and ferment and soon the circulation becomes charged with the acid
poison. The blood be-ins to throw off the humors and acids through the
pores and glands of the skin, producing Eczema, Acne, Tetter, Psoriasis,
Salt Rheum and skin eruptions of various kinds. Eczema appears, usually
with a slight redness of the skin followed by pustules from which there
flows a sticky fluid that dries and form3 a crust, and the itch in j is intense.
