Stone gathered at the home of his par
ents last Friday evening for the pur
pose of giving him a farewell party.
The yuong man left the next day to
matriculate with Columbia College
at Milton, making his home with his
uncle, J. M. Stone.
Mrs. Fred Gross sr. suffered a very
severe scald on the right arm, extend
ing from wrist to elbow, last Friday.
She was lifting a boiler of soalding
hot water, when in some manner it
slipped, throwing the water over her
arm. Tne skin came off in strips,
causing a very sore arm.
'lilr. and Mrs. J. H. Stone arrived in
tne city Saturday from their wedding
trip. They visited relatives and
friends at Hood River and in Crook
county. They will reside in tbe res
idence recently vaoatod by Charles
Gay, and Mr. Stone will conduct ' a
meat market in Atbena.
In from eight to 12 school districts
throughout tbe county, the semi-annual
eighth grade examinations were
started yesterday. Between 60 and 60
applicants for advancement will en
deavor to answer tbe questions pre
pared by tbe state superintendent.
The papers will be graded by the
county board of examiners.

last evening iu Castle Hall. The third
rank was confericd on J. H. Stone.
The local degree team was materially
assisted in the work by members of

affeotion of the eyes, with which he
is afflicted. Some time ago be bad

tbe eye, whioh be negleoted to have
extracted. Both eyes became .badly
inflamed, and bloodpoisoning was
feared. '
Geo. Surbeck.' father of F. B. Sur
beok of this city, died at Baker City
yesterady, after a short illness. Mr.
Surbeck had arrived but a few days
ago from Ohio, and came to Oregon
with tbe intention of making his borne
with bis sons, one of wbom resides in
Baker City, one at Walla Walla and
one here. The remains will be in
tered at Walla Walla tomorrow

Richards, was called upon to perform
a marriage ceremony Saturday eve
ning, shortly after the arrival of tbe
Pendleton-Walla Walla mixed train.
Tbe happy couple were made one in
short order i:y tbe obliging Justice,
and proceeded on at onoe, tbelf desti
nation being North Yakima. The
contracting parties were Tbos. Potts
and Miss Mary Fuller of Echo.
Drs. Heisley entertained their pa
tients and friends at their hospitable
home last evening to the'number of 30
or more. A ganuioe "candy pull"
was the feature of the evening. Tbe
doctor is an expert candy maker and
many of bis friends from time to time
enjoy bis dainty confections. These
entertainments era a permanent featnre
with Dr. and Mrs. Heisley, and in tbe
near future they 'expect to have in
their home a number of other friends
to enjoy their hospitality.
