Acoordiug to a dispatch to The Port
land Journal, Senator Bonnie was a
special and invited gnost of Preeideut
Roosevelt at dinner the other evening,
on which occasion the president ex
pressed rri nob pleasure in the devotion
of the senator, both in the present and
la the past, to reform work. The in
formation given the president on tbis
snbjeot came of ooorse from the sen
ator, and if be shonld not consider
himself a reformer, who would? A
good many people in Oregon who are
familiar with the senator's brief bnt
not barren career as a member of the
legislature will learn for the first
time that bis purpose and object were
reform.
The health officer of the national
government has lately been making an
Investigation into the milk supply of
the oities of the country. His inquiries,
made at tbo direotion of the President,
nre intendod to diselose, so far as pos
sible, the responsibility of impure milk
for the spread of disease, and are likely
to lead to the exercise of some degree
of governmental control over interstate
commerce in milk. There is no longer
any doubt that disoase is spread by
impure milk, whether the impurities
originate in the dairy or are due to
fermentation after delivery to the cus
tomer. During the coming year eight Indian
reservations will be thrown open to
entry. Praotioally 6,000,000 acres now
tied up will be released, and in this
total are lands of all kinds and de
scriptions agricultural, timber, graz
ing and mineral lands, not to mention
the vast; areas of land that will become
valuable if irrigated. The largest
openiDg will be on the Yakima reser
vation, Washington, and other large
. tracts .wiU - be released at Colville
Wash. ; Iathead, Mont.1 Lower Brule
and Rosebud, South Dakota; Coeur
d'Alene un3 Lembi, Idaho.
As nn example of the euormoos
pnoes spent for advertising space in
the large current periodicals, we quote
a few uS follows: A single page in one
issue of the Cbioago Daily News can
not be secured for less than $1,141 ; in
the New York Amerioan a page costs
080; in the Now York Herald, $1600;
1 .. ll. . LI 4. .. J T, J ri 4. k 1 OAA.
the Woman's Home Companion $1,800;
the Youth's Companion, $3,400; and
iu the Ladies' Home Journal, $4,000.
Cuban annexations may come iu
time. Many Cubans desiro it, and
many Americans think both countries
would beuoflt. But to be creditable
and thoroughly workable it must come
in the natural order of things. Should
it corneas-toe result of a conspiracy of
Amerioan spectators, operating in dis
regard of this government's duty and
promises iu tbo premise, and with
ouly their wallets iu mind, it would
bo certain to breed no end of trouble.
It has been estimated that tbo issu
ance of clearing-house certificates by
the bauks of the United States will
mean a profit to tbo banks of from ten
to twouty milliou dollars. Just about
that amount will fail to turn up at the
rtiauk counters for redemption, and will
thus mean that much clear profit.
Many will bo lost or destroyed while
crank curio collectors will keep a mil
liou or two as souvenirs of the flurry.
The attorneys for Thaw and their
hired expert alienists are going to show
that it was "stuporous melauoholia,"
rather than "dementia Amerioana,"
or "exaggerated ego," that was his
excusing aflliotiou when he billed
Stanford White. But people geuerally
bad an idoa that l'haw was rather a
gay aud lively gent, even on that oc
casion. However one term will do
about as well as another for an excuse.
The societies not affiliated with the
American Federation of Labor have a
membership of about 500,000, which,
with the total membership of the Fed
eration makes the aggregate member
ship of all the labor societies iu the
United States about 3,500,000.

FALSE ATTACK ON ROOSEVELT.
It is discreditable to a member of
congress to make such maliciously die
honest statements as those to which
Representative Willett of New York
gave utterance in the house on Tues
day. In an attack on President Roose
velt he declared that "the president
has gone forth day after day to the
people of the nation and the people of
the world and declared to them that
the men who held the reins of our
great industrial institutions are dis
honest and are not worthy of our con
fidence." A fair reading of the president's
speeches will reveal that be has done
nothing of the sort. He has ever been
emphatic in- distinguishing between
the honest and dishonest men, and has
repeatedly shown bis reoognization of
the faot that the latter, though con
spicuous ty reason of their dishonesty,
are in the minority. It is but neces
sary to refer to President Roosevlet's
latest message to congress to prove bis
exact position.
In the first paragraph of that mes
sage he says: "As a rule the business
of our people is conducted with hon
esty and probity, and this applies alike
to farms and factories, to railroads and
banks, to all our legitimate commer
cial enterprises." But, he adds, "Iu
auy large body of men, however, there
are certain to bo some that are dishon
est, and if the conditions are such that
these men prosper or commit misdeeds
with impunity, their example is a very
evil thing for the community"
Again, quoting from a former mes
sage Mr. Roosevelt said: "The aim of
the national government is quite as
much to favor and protect honest cor
porations, honest business men of
wealth, as to bring to justice those in
dividuals aud corporations represent
ing dishonest methods." And again:
"The antitrust law should not prohibit
corporations that do no injustice to the
public still less those the existence of
which is on the whole of benefit to the
public"
These are but a few of many similar
quotations that could be made from
the presidents utterances. Secretary
Taft, in bis reoent speeob at Boston,
also stated the attitude of the president
when he said: '"The course of the
administration has been directed
against suoh oigauized capital as was
violating the statutes of the United
States and no others."
Deeds, it is said, speak louder than
words, and the deeds of the Roosevelt
administration show tbatiu no single
instance has there been a departure
from the principle laid down in words.

SMALLPOX REMEDY.
A Westerner corresponded says:
When Jenner discovered cowpox in
England the world of science hurled an
avalanche of fame upon his head; but
when the most scientiBo school of
medicine in the world that of Paris
published this reoeipt as a panaoea
for smallpox, it passed unheeded. It
is as sure as fate, and conquers in every
instance. It is harmless when taken
by a well person. It will also cure
soarlet fever. Here is the receipt, as
I have used it, and cured my children
of the soarlet fever. Here it is as I
have used it to cure the smallpox.
When learned physicians said the pa
tient must die, it cured: Sulphate of
ziuo, one graiu; foxglove (digitalis)
ono graiu; half teaspooufnl of sugar;
mix with two tablespoouf uls of water.
When mixed add four ounces of water,
and take a tablespoonful every hour.
Either disoase will disappear in
twelve hours. For a ohild, smaller
doses, according to age.
AT NIGHTFALL.
I heard you whisper in your sleep
".Me loves oo daddy des a heep."
And, though your mother had prepared
Your little bod for you, I dared
To sit aud hold you longer, till
I heard the plaintive whippoorwill
Call from the gloomy forest's edge;
And till the bullfrog in the sledge
Sent his deep cry across the gloom,
A vibrant, rumbling, loud ba-zoom,
And clasped you tighter than before,
And stooped and hoped for something
more
To wing to me from realms of Bleep
Thau "loves oo daddy des a heap."
But that was every word you said.
And, jet, it seemed your curly bead
Lay closor, warmer to my breast,
Till I imagined that your rest
Was full of me just full of dad
Aud that your little soul was glad,
Where'er I wandered far and free,
Because of the great love of me
That hedged you round and all about
And loved you when the lights were
out;
And whou the world hung iu the dark.
Mooulight uor starlight,' with no spark
To guide it; naught below, aoove.
But only Ood's enduring love.
I love to think of this old world,
Liko a -wee baby, ly ing ourled
Against the Father's loving breast
All nightie-robed and suug to rest,
Content aud glad and unafraid,
And Buuggling, as its ear were laid
Agaiust a heart whose each throb sings
Of love, excluding all euoh things
As gold and fame and all the dross
That men pursue at suoh a loss
Of love; the old world wandered back
To youth aloug its age-worn traok,
And in the Father's arms asleep.
Lisping, "I love oo dea a heap."
