TRIUMPHANT SCIENCE.
A report, given more or less cre
danco, oomos from a Walla Walla
hospital, to the offeot that Wood of
the Weston Loader was the victim of
a successful surgical operation which
resulted in the removal of a quart of
angle worms from bis loft leg. It is
further statod that the Weston editor
is looked upon as a wonder by the
nurse girls in tho institution whioh
has so suddenly leaped into public
view from enviable notoriety of being
tho home of the scientific surgical op
eration, together with the astounding
fact that the patient was practically a
bundle of fish bait. It is not to be
wondered at that the nurse girls con
sider Wood a wonder and the world at
large will agree with tbem in their
.oorreot diagnosis of the class to which
he belongs, the peculiarities of the
colonel will nowTbe readily understood
by the public. In the past it was no
ticeable that Wood's peculiarities were
more or less assertive in damp weather.
On rainy days bis left leg absolutely
refused to respond to the natural laws
and praotioos of navigation and would
totally ignore the criss-cross perambu
lations of its brother, the right limb.
The belhgerancy of bis left leg has
caused the colonel much humiliation
and lost him many a drink. To be
caught in the center of a muddy cross
walk with hi9 left foot glued down,
and compelled to anchor there until
his crop of angle worms bad satisfied
their famished thirst in copious
draughts of moisture, was more tbau
boon companions could stand for; so
they drank to the health of the fish
bait and left it remain in the mud
whore it bolonged. Now that the
surgeon's keen knife has laid bare and
removed this wonderful seoretion in
tho colonel's anatomy and given to the
world oue of the rarest feats tho pro
fession of saw-bouea has aohieved, the
reason of Wood's rash action of prom
enading the streets of Walla Walla
with his loft foot cemented to a beer
keg, has been soieutiflcally, and at the
same timo satisfactorily, explained.
facts speak louder lhau(tords, and in
this case it looks to an outsider that
Mr. Steel did favor the Ross institu
tion because Mr. Rosa had pulled him
through the primaries and tbeeleotion
No one charges that the Treasurer
placed bia money in the Ross institu
tiou to defraud the state, or even sup
posing it would be in'joopardy. Only
au idiot would make such a charge.
But it does look as if Mr. Steel came
to the reilef of Mr. Ross after the fail
ure of the Moore concern, when a run
was being made on the Ross bank.
That the risk was great the events
have proved.
The Optimist is of the opinion that
Mr. Steel has not conducted bis office
in a way to show , us that we should
repose continued confidence in him.
The Optimist thinks that be has shown
by his aotions that be is not a fit man
for State Treasurer and that while he
is not guilty of misappropriation of
(be state funds, he is guitly of using
snob bad judgment, and of snob wilful
neglect, that be is not the man to re
tain control of the public money for
another three years.
We do not waut a Democrat in the
offloe, but we do want a compotent
man thore, and if Steel is competent
then we would like to know what in
competency is. The Dalles Optimist
WHERE STEEL STANDS.
Bofore the lust election it was oom
iuouly repotted that the campaign of
Mr. Stool was flnanood by Mr. Ross, of
tho Title Guarantee & Trust Company.
Just bow true that is no ono knows
but Mr. Stool and tho oilloers of tho
trust company.
Mr. Stool's oflico was in the trust
company's bunking room, and ho could
usually bo fouud in and urouud the
bunk when not at Sulom. No oue can
deny that. Neithor can it bo douiod
that he deposited twice ns much money
iu that ouo institution as he did in the
othor 83 bauks where he had state
funds.
Mr. Steel says that be showed no
fuvorism, that ho did not know his
balance was so largo, aud several othor
things along that liuo, but sometimes
Representative Acbeson of Peunsyl
vania is so enthusiastio over the prop
osition to vote $50,000,000 for inland
waterways that be has introduced a
bill to raise the amount by increasing
the tax on beor from $1 to $3 a barrel.
He explains that last yeur there were
consumed 52,000,000 barrels of beer,
aud as consumption is constantly on
the inoroase, the additional tax would
bo more than enough to improve with
in a few years every river aud harbor
in the country. The consumer might
protest, howevor, against paying for
wnter when be buys beer. Mr. Aob
eson, by tbe way, lives in a prohibition
town.
The middle states are looking out for
fence sharks who are calling upon tbe
farmers and offering to put up an
eight wire fenoe with iron poets for
eight cents a foot. No cash is required
but before the fenoe is put up he gives
a promisory note agreeing to pay eight
cents a foot as soon as the fenoe is put
up; later it transpires that it means
eight cents a foot for eaoh wire, mak
ing 61 cents a running foot for tbe
fenoo.
Manitoba's revenue from flues im
posed on "blind pigs" in Winnipeg
during tbe past year amounted to
$12,000. Winnipeg enforces a stringent
midnight aud Sunday closing law, but
tbe blind pigs seem to be able to. pay
flues and coutinuo in business.
Resolutions have been iutroduood iu
tbe Canadian parliament in favor of
senate reform or abolition. The sena
tors there are appoiuted for life, and
the actual usefulness of the upper
bouse has loug been questioned.
