A GRATEFUL PASTOR Rev. Geo. T. Ellis of the Baptist Church Tells of His Restora. tion to Health. The new science of Osteopathy, which bna been making snob rapid progress throughout the United States aDd which has restored to health hun dreds of thoosaoda of sufferers, bag a Arm friend in Rev. Geo. T. Ellis, a veteran minister of the Baptist ohnron. For the past four years Mr. Ellis has nad charge of the Baptist work at Athena, where he is greatly beloved. Hearing of the almost miraouloos restoration to health of this white haired minister after all nope bad been practioally abandoned by bis family and friends, the writer called npon him the other day, thinking that what he had to say would be -of publio in terest. Mr. Ellis oourteously respond ed, saying that be felt too grateful to ward the new eonroe of healing not to acoord it full meed of praise for the wonderful benefits he had derived from it "For the past fourteen years I have been suffering more or less fom asth ma," he said, "and finally became so badly afflicted that I oould not get a single breath without an effort and my nights were spent in wakeful suffering instead of slumber. At last I had to relinquish my work, and in the faces of my friends I oonld see the silent fear that the Shadow of Death was upon me. I consulted!!. D.'s of pro minenoe without obtaining permanent relief, aud traveled all over the United States from Vermont to Sontbern Cal ifornia. Last winter I spent at Los Angeles, where I wheezod all the time with my usual discomfort I never found a place where I could free my self from my affliction. "Returning from California last spring, much enfeebled, I went to Baker City to consult an Osteopathic Pbysioian, and much to my surprise and gratitude was able after four of bis scientiQo treatments to throw away the 'asthma cure' that I had been in baling every hour, night and day, in order to breathe. I have been since taking Osteopatbio treatment regu larly, returning to Athena for the pur pose after the Drs. Heisley & Heisley located here, and considering the fact that I have reaobed the age of 56 years, I consider my present vigorous state of health as little short of marve lous. I am able to walk four or five miles without difficulty, whereas be fore a block was about the limit of my endurance, and I am now doing physi cal work that I haven't been able to accomplish in many dreary years. I tell you truly that I am willing to pro claim the virtues of Osteopathy from the housetops." Here Mr. Ellis stopped for a moment to smile his gratitude, and be certainly looked the picture of ruddy health. "And that isn't all," be continued. "I have a sister living in La Grande. Mrs. M. J. Crandall, who is now 6? years of age and is a vigorous, strong and healthy woman. Yet she was not always so. Not very long ago she was a constant eufferur from so-called Bright's disease, and after taking treatment from four different M. D.'s was given up to die. She finally con sulted an Osteopath and inside of a month he was able to restore to its proper position and function a mis plaoed vertabrae that had been the cause of all her trouble. We are liv ing witnesses, she and I, to our faith in this modern doctrine of healing, whioh I do not hesitate to recommend to the afflicted." Weston Leader. He Fought at Gettysburg. David Parker, of Fayette, N. Y., who lost a foot at Gettysburg, writes: "Eleotrio Bitters have done me more good than any medioine I ever took. For several years I bad stomach trou ble, and paid out much mosey for medioine to little purpose, until I be gan taking Eeotrio Bitters. I would not take $500 for what tbey have done for me." The work of cutting Christmas trees in Maine for tbe rest of tne country is now at its height Nearly 4,000,000 trees are in demand annually, and in that state tbe Christmas tree trade has become an industry of the first impor tance. For several weeks past work men have been engaged in seleoting nnrl cnttino the trees in tbe central and northern part of the state. Now the process of loading and shipping them on flat cars to tne big cities oi roe .asi and Middle West has begun. Until a few years ago it was tbe smaller treHJ that were sola tne most .now ioe lai-anr trees are most in demand, owing to the fact that the small family tree ha been larcely done away witn in tavnr nt the laeer tree used in oommon by tbe members of oburches, sooieties and other organizations, xne trace puts many thousands of dollars into the pockets of the thrifty Maine farm er and woodsman eacn year. We noticed in our last study that human creeds are at present tbe sole hindrances to Christian unity. Take away these hindrances and tbe work is done. Tbey have been added to tbe Bible as a foundation for tbe different denominations upon which to rest By removing these creeds tbe Bible only remains, and thus we have com mon ground, for all of us believe it "Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for re- proor, for instruction which is in righteousness; that the man of God may be complete, furnished comple tely unto every good work." 3 Tim. 3:16, 17. If these creeds do more than that, they do too much; if tbey do less than that, they do too little; if they do tbe same as that, they are super fluous and should be taken away. I invite your attention to universally admitted facts. In the first age of the Church of Christ, tbe seot spirit was rampant. Tbe Jews were divided into discordant sects Pharisees, Saddu- cees, Eesenes and Samaritans. Tbe Gentile world was divided into vari ous sects of philosophy and almost endless varieties of religion. The Jews were barbarians to tbe Gentiles, tbo Gentiles were dogs to tbe Jews. Yet tbe apostles preached the same gospel to all and gathered out of all these masses a church a brotherhood which was one in Christ. What the gospel has done once, it can do again. No hindrance to this, exoept Christ ians themselves. Let all opinions be hold privately. When we come to tbe passage, "My Father is greater than I," let us not speculate upon tbe inferiority of the Son, build theories and form creeds on those theories and cause a wrangling spirit among onr brethren. Let us ever and always speak in the language of the Book. If my Methodist brother wants to hold to tbe opinion that faith alone". saves, let him do so but not teach it unless he finds it in tbe Bible. If my Baptist brother still wants to hold the opinion that repen tance comes before faith in saving the sinner, let him do so. That shoald not keep us apart. Those who hold that sprinkling or pouring is valid baptism, that the Mourners benob and anxious seat are necessary to salvation, let them still keep these opinions but not teach them, unless tbey are found in the Bible. While there is but "one faith," there may be ten thousand opinions; hence, if Christians are ever to be one, they must be one in faitb, not in opinion. . Do people want Christian unity? There cannot be a right-thinking and a right-loving person who does not want it. In view of the cost of salva tion and tbe order from the Head of the Church to hasten with the good news to the ends of tbe earth, we cer tainly have no ' time for civil war. Before the great naval battle of Tra falgar, Admiral Nelson called Gap. Collingwood aud Cap. Hardy, who had been deadly enemies, and commanded them to shake hands as he pointed to tbe French fleet and said: "Gentle men, there is your enemy." The Mas ter stands before us with pierced hands. With one, He points to Satan and says: "There is your enemy," and with the other He points to the vast, white harvest field and says: "There is your harvest ; together cast in your slokles, for ye are my fellow- workers." "The good fruit of the ohurob.es oneness; it will be an evi dence of Christianity." Matthew Henry, Presbyterian. "Tbe one name we ougbt .to have is Christian," Joseph Parker, Congregationalist "I pray you leave my name alcne, and do not call yourselves Lutherans but Christians." Martin Luther. "Would to God that all party names and un scriptural phrases and forms whioh have divided tbe Christian world were forgotten." John Wesley. Others oould be added, but these are enough to show that those who love the Christ and are leaders in tbis great world work do not want division. Tbe Church of Christ, represented in your oity, is the only church in tbe world pleading for war to oease among the people of God and for all to unite upon the Bible alone. On tbis we are misunderstood. We are looked upon by our religious neighbors as heresy- bunters, fault-finders and fighters; that we are looking for something in the denominations to fight and make war over. But let them understand that we are striving to do away with these divisions that cause ill feeling between the people of God and that we come bringing tbe olive branch of peaoe, On our banner is inscribed tbe motto gleaned from the Savior's prayer "Let us all be one, that tbe world may be lieve."
