Frank Coolidge, the jeweler, left yesterday for a couple, of weeks' out ing at Long Beaob. " v - Peter ouna, a pioneer freighter of Umatilla Landing, died in Boise City last week of apoplexy. - Dave returned to La Cross, Wash., where they will reside Mrs. Marion Jack is in the city from her home near Eastland and is a guest of the King families. Mrs. Claud Estes and little son re turned from Pendleton Saturday, after a wees's visit with friends. Miss Effie Adoock has returned from a sojourn fn the mountains, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Runyon. Mrs. Joseph Ringle and mother, of Walla Walla, are over this week on a visit to relatives in this vicinity. v Will M "Peterson,' who is one of the attorney's for the defendants In the Milton water suit, was in town Tues day. Mrs. Sarah Bowles returned to her home in Walla Wallla Monday, after a fortnight's visit with her daughter here. ; ' D. G. Baker and children are now settled in their home on High street, having moved in from the country. MrsMalcolm and sister were called to Spokane the first of the week on acoount of the critical illness of a sis- ter there. ' ' . Mrs. George Buzan of Pendleton, ac companied by her daughters Myrtle " and Belle, visited relatives in this oit Tuesday. A child was born recently to Mr. and Mrs. Alex Kirk, of Weston, which lived only a few days, expiring on the 5th. C. A. Smith traveling correspondent for the Spokesman-Review, was in the city yesterday in the interest of the Spokane paper. Yllr. and Mrs. Joe Cannon have tak en charge of the Watts farm and have moved there to assume the duties at tendant upon farm life. Mrs. Eugene Boyer and Mrs. Mary Center, of Walla Walla were guests of Mrs. Fay S. Le Grow Monday, spending the day in this city. Mr. aud Mrs. George Wilson. have moved to Athena from near Weston. Mr. Wilson has found employment on, one of the Barrett ranches. He bad a splendid time, and though he caught no fish, he returned with a fresh story or two. Miss Edna Taylor arrived home yes terday from an extended visit at Ta coma and Centra Ua, Wash. She was accompanied as far as Pendleton by Miss L9ta Edington, who returned to her home in Helix to spend her sum mer vacation. She is attending the High school in Tacoma. Mrs. E. R. Cox has been very ill at her home in this oity, but is now re covered. She goes to Weston this eve ning to attend a session of the Eastern Star lodge. and Mrs. Will Read of Adams left Sunday for a visit at Hood River, from where they will go to Newport, where Mr. Read will attend the sum mer sohool.- Mrs. A. L. Jones has disposed of her interest in the Hotel Hoskins at Echo and after visiting relatives in Pendle ton aud Pilot Rook, will seek a busi ness looation in Seattle. Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Johns were entertained.. . at dinner yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. Cfias. Norris," and today J visited with Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Nelson near town. Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Wortbington and Emery, and Mr. and Mrs. Bene fiel, of Weeton, drove to the Hastings place on the mountains Sunday, where they spent the day. Rev. V. E. Hoven returned Satur day from the valley, leaving Mrs. Hoven and baby at the home of rela tives at Kelso, Wash., where they will remain during the heated term. Measles has appeared in Athena 'again, the children in the King family being afflioted. Two little girls in George Gerking's family east of town have just recovered from the disease. . Wednesday afternoon the ladies of the auxiliary of the C. W. B. M. met at the home of Mrs. Austin Foss, where a most interesting meeting was held. About H members were present, LThe harvesting of wheat has com menced at jtwjno and at Pilot kook. Tuesday morning, C. A. Cramer of Eobo commenced harvesting 1700 acres. He expects a yield of 25 bu shels per aore - Saturday evening a large number of Milton Knights of Pythias went over to Walla Walla to attend the joint installation ceremonies held by the two Walla Walla lodges at the Odd Fellows temple. Mrs. Graoe Curley, fomerly of Cambridge, Idaho, is in the city visit ing her aunt, Mrs. Delia Maloney. Mr and Mrs. Curley are on their way to Nez Perce, Idaho, where they will make their home ' Last week A. L. Swaggart shipped two fine Poland China hogs from his famous herd. A male hog was ex pressed to W. C. Morris, of Parma, Idaho, aud a female to the Woodside Stock Farm at Echo. A. P. Myriok, a well known Helix resident, was in the city yesterday. Mr. Myriok is one. of the owners of Pinoe William, the draft stallion, winner of first prize at the Athena colt show, this season. A splendid crop of wheat is ripen ing out in the Helix neighborhood. Several combines were sold to farmers in that vicinity this season, and as a result the grain crop will be harvested I much earlier this year. v3. A. Many people are driving out to the faints adjacent to Athena and picking cherries and berries, as they oan be had somewhat cheaper in that way, and in fact are sometimes not to be prooured in any other way. Rev. Geo. T. Ellis will be down from Baker City Sunday to preach in the Baptist church. Mr. Ellis will make these semi-monthly trips until September 1st, when he hopes to be home to remain permanently. T. G. Hailey Ite of the supreme bench, one of the leading attorneys in the water case at Milton, suffered a severe attack of appendicitis while in Walla Walla, Tuesday night, and left for bis home in Portland. and after the session the ladies were, served with cake and fruit punch by the hostess, assisted by Miss Maud Gholson. - The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Fred Ker shaw, on the first Wednesday in AUgUSt. Mrs. Charles Betts and Miss Mary McKinnon, who represented the Ath-, ena Baptist church at the Spokane ' National convention, returned Tues- j day to their homes here- Tbey enjoyed a visit with Mrs. Fred Miller while in Spokane. Not content to depend on railway transportation of fuel, aud profiting j by last winters wood and coal famine, Helix and Juniper ranohers have dropped back to the good old way of 1 hauling their supply from the moun tains, east of town. ;, Henry Miller of the Preston-Parton Milling force, left Tuesday evening for a two weeks' visit with relatives in Linn county. Incidentally, Mr. Mil ler expects to oast a "fly" athwart the gamy waters of the MoKenzie, "Doo" Osborn's favorite trout stream. Misses Stella and Luia Lien a lien have returned from Spokane, where they went as delegates from Adams to the National Baptist convention. They were met there by their aunt, Mrs. Hugh McArthur, of Portland, and to gether visited Mrs. Fred Stine. Mrs. M. L. Watts entertained the sewing class in the Baptist Sunday school at her home Wednesday after noon. The young ladies are making rapid progress toward the consumma tion of tha sale and social which they will hold sometime during the month. Local insuranoe agents are being assisted this week in soliciting grain insurance by traveling representatives of the different companies. I. M. Kemp and B. B. Richards have been touring the grain fields this week in quest of policies, and both met with gratifying success. . - . - j Manager Shaffer, of the Preston Pai ton Mills returned to his home in Waitsburg yesterday after a. short stay here. The Waitsburg mill will be closed down for a Season, and this will give new impetus to the Athena mill, whioh will continue to be run on full time.- , , ( Ed Foster, the aff able assistant to Byron N. Fifty young people were pres ent and enjoyed themselves on the lawn, which was lighted with Chin ese lanterns, until near midnight. Sandwiches, cake and punch were served, with four small ladies as v?it resses. H. E. Swenson, formerly with the Milton Eagle, but now editor of the Inland Empire Magazine, published in Peudleton, was in the city Tuesday. Mr. Swensou considers that his maga zine has a field peonliaily its own, from the fact that its principal pur pose is to boost the progressive Inland Empire, and its efforts are baoked by the organized development leagues in this "district. Dr. David Lavender, oity marshal of Weston, has ingratiated himself into Ira Kemp's lasting friendship. The dootor found Mr. Kemp's hunting dog in Weston, evidently in the rigid throes resulting from strychnine poi soning, and at pnoe prooeeded to save the valuable canine's life. His efforts were successful, and the dog was de livered tc its owner, wherefore Mr. Kemp was duly thankful. So was the dog.
