Hood a barsaparilla is now put up in choco lated tablets called Sarsatabs, as well as in the usual liquid form. Sarsatabs have identically the same curative properties as the liquid form, besides accu racy of dose, convenience, economy, no loss by evap oration, breakage, or leakage. Druggists or promptly by mail. C. L Hood Co.. Lowell, Mass. Guaranteed under the Food and A Singer's Liags. The singer at the end of the practice aria panted heavily. "I sang one hun dred and ninety-six notes that time," he said, "without once taking breath." "Indeed! That must be a record." "No. The record Is held by Cour tlce Pounds. Pounds sang three hun dred and sixteen notes without respir ation In 1808. The record previous to that was held by Farinelli, with three hundred notes. Norman Salmond has sung two hundred and eighty-seven notes In this way. The average man could hardly Blng fifty notes without breathing; to the singer two hundred would be nothing. A delegation of fellow townusmen re cently called on Ruf us K. Crumbs, of Midway, Ky., to congratulate him on the receipt of a Carnegie medal. -As his friends were taking leave Mr. Combs wished them all a merry Christmas. "And I hope," he ended, "that you'll have a more bountiful dinner than fell to the lot of a young friend of mine last year. "lie, tbe poor chap, was stopping at a cheap New York boarding house, and on Christmas day, after he had eaten a turkey neck, a potato and a splinter of sodden mince pie, the landlady said to him, as he rose just as tbe weak coffee was brought on : -. " 'Oh, don't leave thme table, Mr. Smith.' " 'I must, madam,' said Smith, grim ly. 'It's hard wood, and my teeth are not what they used to be.' n " IH Constancy. A story Is told of General Sir Alfred Horsford, who believed In a celibate army. A soldier once sought his per mission to marry, saying he had two good conduct badges and $25 In the savings bank. 'Well, go away," said Sir Alfred, "and if you come back this day year In the same mind you shall marry. I'll keep the vacancy." On the annlverasry the soldier repeated his request "But do you really, after a year, want to marry?" "Yea, sir, very much." "Sergeant major, take his name down. Yes, you may marry. never believed there was so much cor stancy In man or woman. Right face. Quick march!" As the man left the room, turning his head, he said : "Tank you, sir. It isn't the same woman." How Color Affect Mentality There are good and evil effects even In color, not only In the Inartistic ar rangement of them to the trained eye of an artist, but In plain every-day red and blue and green, to say nothing of others. According to Medical Talk for the Home, If a person were confined in a room with purple walls, with no color but purple around him, by the end of a month be would be a raving madman, Scarlet has even worse effects. Blue Is very depressing; hence "the blues." Green Is quite soothing, and yellow also has good effects on the vision and spirits of most people. The Soft Answer. "I have already said 'No' to you, Mr. Vere," said Miss Bute. "I don't seem to be able to make myself plain, al though I have tried " "Ah, Miss Bute," Interrupted Percy Vere, "you couldn't do that, no matter how you try." Often are we told that the most self ish people in the world are those who are In love. They are so absorbed In each other that they have no thought or consideration for others. But love does not make people as selfish as does grief. When people are in sorrow they not only withdraw from the activities of the world, but also en velop themselves in such a mantle of misery that to come into contact with them means to be depressed. There are, It must be acknowledged, excep tions to this rule, but they are rare. Whoever coined the phrase, "The lux ury of grief," knew human nature pret ty well. Teople love to nurse their sor rows, to luxuriate In them, parade them for sympathy. There Is the case of the Colorado couple who lost their only child last spring. Tbe little one was 6 years old and the grief of the parents was ter rible. Nor did It lessen as the months went by. The result has been tnat both are on the verge of nervous col lapse, and under the care of a physl ciaiw. He has prescribed a cure which they are going to try. It Is to take up a rigid course of study. This winter they have both entered the University of Colorado, she to pursue a post-grad uate course, he to study law.' He has been a political leader and officeholder ; she is a highly Intelligent and cultured woman. Neither is quite 40 years old. Is there no work for others these two people could do that would take their minds off themselves? Are there no lit tle 6-year-old children In Boulder, Col., needing care and sympathy In whom they could take an Interest, whom they could help over the rough path of life? "Ah," you say, "but think how some little child like that would recall their own child!" But If grief over a child's death does not make parents feel a greater love for other children and a desire to help them, what good has that parental love done them to make them thus selfish? Headache. If a disagreeable pres ure Is felt In the forehead above tbe eyes, connected with attacks of dizzi ness and loss of appetite, tbe cause Is simply disorder of the stomach. This only requires a short hungry cure. " If the pain In the forehead is violent and accompanied by fever, It Is a symptom of something more severe and a physi cian should be consulted at once. A lasting pain In the head without dizzi ness, fever, etc., Indicates something wrong In the lungs and continued deep breathing of fresh air should relieve It If frequent pains occur in the back of the head, have the liver examined, thereby preventing perhaps a long ni ness. A stinging, boring pain indicates anaemia, while a violent headache In one side of the head Is a sure sign of nervous prostration which may be rem edied by absolute rest for several hours In-a quiet, dark room; If tbe pain is located In the top of the head, causing the feeling as If a heavy weight were placed upon the vault of the cranium, we may safely presume that excessive mental exertion Is the cause. If the pains appear with short Interruptions through all parts of the head they are of . rheumatic or neurotic nature and due to a cold. Logic la lioirle. The Irish Intellect Is more often as sociated with wit than with logic ; but an Irish workman recently silenced for a moment the upbraiding tongue of his foreman by a display of something which bore just enough resemblance to logic to confuse his hearer. The workman enjoyed leaning on his hod and making shrewd observations much more than he did stirring about, and the cry for "ilort! Mort!" fell on dull ears. "Why don't you attend to your hod and keep that man going?" demanded the foreman, severely, when Patrick was enjoying one of his frequent pe riods of rest Patrick raised- his hod with a leisure ly movement and turned a pair of twinkling eyes on his accuser. "Sure, now," he said, easily, "if I was to keep him going all the time, sorra a thing he'd say at all, at all; an' If he didnt say anything I'd be thinking he wasn't there. An If be wasn't there, sor, what would he be wanting of morthar, annyway?" mmt Lke Dry In Vp.
