The Blue Mountain sawmill has fin ished logging for the winter after banking up something like a million feet, reports the Leader. Unfavorable weather conditions in the mountains renderod further operations difficult. Sawing will begin about the first of May. Dr. T. J. Lloyd, of Pendleton, has recently made an investigation of the disease which is prevalent among the Hack-tailed rabbits found so plenti fully in the west end of Umatilla county, and be says that these animals are suffering from tuberculosis of a prouonnoed type. The deceased came to Umatilla connty in 1870, and set tled on a farm on Wild Horse creek, above Athena. He died at the age of 72, leaving a son, James Harris, of Weston. The funeral took place at Weston yesterday afternoon. The bad ooudition of the roads ubrth west of town was the cause of at least two upsets iu that neigh Dor hood last week. John Walker over turned a baok containing his family in about four foot of water, and Mr. Lnlluo, while driving with his wife and ohildron and Mrs. James Wood ruff and little daughter, had his hack turned upsido down in tho mud. For tunately no oue was hurt in either aocideut. Rev. Chas. O. Phipps, state field worker of tho Oregon Sunday Sohool Association, will be in Athena on Fri day, Feb. 23, and conduct a union Sunday Sohool rally, under the aus pices of the churches and Suuday sohools of the city, assisted by pastors and Sunday school workers of the town. Rev. Phipps is an able and fluent platform speaker and will deliver the principal address at both of tho services, at 2 p. m. and at 7:30 p. rr. Excellent singing will be pro vided by the choirs of the three local churjhes. Everybody is cordially in vited to attend these gatherings. Place of meeting will be duly an nounced in the Press at a later date. The bids for the purchase of certain tracts of heirship lands on the reserva tion were opened by Major Ed wards at the agenoy yesterday. Three pieces of land were disposed of, the highest bidders bring Dr. J. D. Pla mondon, and H. A. Barrett, of this city and John Crow of Pendleton. Dr. Plamondon bid $25 per acre for the Britten place containing 160 acres; H. A.
