As every ship launched is bound to be wrecked, every theater to be burned, the finis of the book Is its reduction to ashes. What became of the Alexandrian li brary? Did the Saracens burn it In 640? There is this question asked: Was there any library at Alexandria containing 700,000 books? Gibbon In clines to the opinion that there was no such library. Canon Taylor insists that if there had been a library It was burned in the time of Julius Caesar. Tradition seems to Indicate, however, that there was a library in the sera peum, by no means a large collection, but whether destroyed by Theophllus or Theodosius is not known. It looks as If the charge brought against the Arabs rested on no foundation. Explo rations of Alexandria in 3805-90 show no traces of the serapeum. The sea port of Egypt was built on a damp foundation, and granting that there was a library, If not destroyed by fire, then the papyri might have suffered from decay due water. ' It was formerly thought that tha stomach was the main organ of diges tion, and dyspepsia was supposed al ways to have Its seat there. But this question has been much studied of late, with the result that the stomach has been found to be of little account, com paratlvely, in the preparation of the food for absorption. The most Import ant part of digestion occurs In the up per part of . the Intestine, where the food, after leaving the stomach, Is churned and mixed thoroughly with the bile and pancreatic secretion. Since, then, the intestine takes such an important part In digestion, it is natural to suppose that a failure to per form this function properly would give rise to serious disturbances of health, and such, in fact, is the case. Intestinal Indigestion is a not un common affection at all periods of life, and is especially prevalent in children. The chief symptoms are flatulence, or wind, more or less colic, diarrhoea, or more often constipation, or an alterna tion of the two; and practical star v a tlon, as shown in weakness and emacia tion. The treatment Is mainly through diet, but this will vary, of course, according to age. In an infant the problem is a difficult one. If the child is fed arti ficially, all prepared foods containing starch should be taken away, and cows' milk, modified as to the amount of fat t,ugar or casein it contains, according to the physician's directions, should be substituted. If the infant is nursing, the life of the mother should be studied, for the state of her health may affect the milk injuriously. In older children and adults the amount of fats and of starchy foods must be carefully regulated. Cereals, pastry, rice, potatoes and bread must be cut out of the dietary for a time, or taken in very small quantity. When eaten at all they should be most thor oughly, even excessively, chewed, for in this way they may be in great meas ure digested by the saliva before reach ing the intestine. The diet should consist mainly of milk, white of eggs, and the more easi ly digestible meats and fish. The diar rhoea or constipation should be regu lated, and sometimes the administra tion of intestinal antiseptics Is bene ficial. Regular exercise in the open - It is perfectly natural to rub the spot that hurts, and when the muscles, nerves, joints and bones are throbbing and twitching with the pains of Rheumatism the sufferer i3 apt to turn to the liniment bottle, or some other external application, in an effort to get relief from the disease, by producing tounter-irritation on the flesh. Such treatment will quiet the pain tempo rarily, but can have no direct curative effect on the real disease because it does not reach the blood, where the cause is located. Rheumatism is more than skin deep it is rooted and grounded in the blood and can only be reached by constitutional treatment IT CANNOT BE RUBBED AWAY. Rheumatism is due to an excess of uric acid in the blood, brought about by the accumulation in the system of refuse matter which the natural avenues of bodily waste, the Bowels and Kidneys, have failed to carry off. This refuse matter, ccming in contact with the different acids of the body, forms uric acid which is absorbed into the blood and distributed to all parts of the body, and Rheumatism frets possession of the system. The aches and pains are only symptoms, and though they may be scattered or relieved for a time air is of great value In the treatment by surface treatment, they will reappear at the first exposure to cold or The cold Datn or snower-bath Is often dampness, or after an attack of indigestion or other irregularity.
