IS ACCUSED OE EXTORTION
San Francisco Grand 3 ury Begins In
vestigation of Alleged Combina
tion to Force Up Prices.
Tbe city grand jury of San Francis
co, iii sotwiou is investigating tbe so
called lumber trust. A large number
of witnesses are awaiting tbeir tnrn
to testily as to tbe obarge tbat 1 timber
companies have formed a trust and
advanced prices to ruinous figures be
ouuse of tbe necessities of tbe people
of burned San Francisco. Men will
bo forced to tell tbeir . connections
witb tbe following institutions.
Tbe Pine Manufacturers' Associa
tion ,tbe Pacific Coast Lumber Man
ufacturers' Association, export; Pa
cific Coast Lumber Manufacturers'
Association, rail; Tbe Paoiflo Coast
Manufacturers' Association,, local;
Tbe Washington Logging & Brokerage
Association ; Tbe Paoiflo Coast Lumber
Association ;tbe Steamsbip Association
of San Franoisco.
Of tbe above organizations, tbe
Washington Logging & Brokerage
Association is considered the mostm
portunt because it represents tbe
beavy landowners.
Among firms eonneoted with it are:
Pugot Mill Company; Port Mill Co.,
Pope & Talbot, San Fancisoo; Blakoley
Mill Co., Washington Lumber Com
pany, F. W. Adams, San Franoisco;
E. K. Wood Lumber Compauy, of
Bollingharo ; E. K. Wood, San Fran
oisco; Simpsion Logging Company, D.
A. Robinson, Seattle; Stimson Mill
Co., Miohaol Earlos and A. S. Kerry,
of Seattle; Tacoma Lumber Company,
and St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Com
- pany, of Tacoma, and tbe English
Logging Company, of Mount Vernon,
owued by George W. Loggie, of Bell
iiiRbam. The present figures are as follows.
Ordinary or cull logs, f 7 per thous
and; merchantable logs, $7.50 per
thousand; dressed lumber and logs No.
1, $12 per thousaud.
Intense indication is folt by the
people here because of the excessive
price.
Tbe lumbermen admit tbat there
has been a sharp advance in prices
siuoe the earthquake, especially dur
ing the past month, but they deny
tbat they have formed any combina
tion to attain snob an end.
THE FLOW OF WATER IS TAPPED
The Rogue River Orchardist Will Now
Have Plenty of Water.
Tbree is jubilation at Ashland over
the striking of a splendid flow of ar
tosian water in a well being bored on
tbe M. L. Pellott fruit farm, four
miles northwest of that city, near
Talent. When tbe borers bod reached
within five feet of a contracted depth
of 800 feet, their drill tapped a flow
of water that gushed up through tbe
eight-inch hole in tbe ground with
astouishiug force and a remarkable
; stream of soft, pare water poured out
of the ground.
The flow is estimated at 700 gallons
per minute, and Mr. Pellett estimates
that it is sufficient toprrlgate his entire
orobard ot 00 acres or iruit trees.
The drilling for artesian water has
been cor ducted by him as an expori-
meut, and its success surprised bis
highest hopes.
