The Louisville packing company,
said to lie tbe largest plant owned by
the Cudahy Packing company, of
Chicago, was closed down indefinitely
June 23. Tbe company was establish
ed iu 1802, employed about 850 men
and had an output of 10,000 sheep,
20,000 cattle and 800,000 hogs. W.W.
Masou, manager of the concern, re
ceived orders to close down two days
ago aud gave as a reason for tbe or
der: "Newspaper critioism and ad
verse legislation." Mr. Masou and
his concern may go out of business,
iu fact will go out of business unless
tbe law is obeyed. But theie will be
men found who can conduct tne pack
ing business on the square and at a
profit. The demand for packing house
products remains just the same but
these produots must be pure and
wholosome, and if Mr. Mason and bis
ilk cannot give them to us.clean busi
noBS men with capital to invest will
eugage in a legitimate packing in
dustry. If you pass along thojbusiness streets
of a town, asserts a thrifty "booster,"
and the business men are disposed to
sing the praises of their associates, yon
have struck a good town. It is a
good town for business, for homes a
good town for schools, churohes, pub
lio improvement and general muncipal
wellboing. If the merchants com
plain that the bankers buy goods in
Chicago, if the doctors charge the law
yers with dishonesty, if tbe druggist
claims the lumbor dealer is a robber
iu short, if there exists a cold-blooded,
every-fellow-for-himself attitude, you
have struck a town that noods shak
ing up. If you live in a good town,
got iu touch with the spirit of recipro
city and the uuited-we-staud policy.

Alaska coal will play an important
feature in tbe development of that im
mense territory in years to come. Al
ready it may be safely said that from
St. Michaels at the mouth of the Yu
kon river to Bennett City, nearly 2000
miles distant, the entire stretch of in
tervening country could be supplied
with Alaska coal. Another big strike
of importance is heralded from the
Atliu district The Atlin Toogo Coal
Syndicate have uncovered immense
seams of coal on the Togoao river and
further development work will be
continued throughout the summer
months.
Thetime has long gone by wheu tbe
office sought the man, and wo find
ourselves in the strenuous political pres

"after the earnest solicitation of my
numerous friends" etc., bad better re

action, men who have the courage of
their couviotions and who can and
will wield the "big stick" if neces
sary, men who are enemies of all
forms of graft and men who are clean
politically, and last and most impor
tant of all, meu who are sober all the
time and have at least the ordinary
amount of intelligence.

Nature's Way Is Best.
The function stmiigtlu'nfng and tissue
building plan of treating chronic, linger
in? ami obstinate cases of disease as pur
sued by Dr. Pierce, is following after
Nature s plan of restoring health.
He use natural remedies, that Is
extracts from native medicinal roots,
prepared by processes wrought out by
tho expenditure of much time and
money, without the use of alcohol, and
by skillful combination In just the right
proportions.
Used as ingredients of Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery. Muck Cherry
bark, Queen's root, Golden Seal root,
liloodroot and Stone root, specially exert
their influence in cases of lung, bronchial
and throat troubles, and this "Discov
ert" is, therefore, a sovereign remedy
for bronchitis, laryngitis, chronic coughs,
catarrh and kindred ailments.
Tho above native roots also havo tho
strongest Mssilile endorsement from the
leading medical writers, of all the several
schools of practice, for the cure not only
of the diseases named above but also for
Indigestion, torpor of liver, or bilious
ness, obstinate constipation, kidney and
bladder troubles and catarrh, no matter
where located.
You don't have to take Dr. Pierce's
say-so alone as to this; what he claims
for his "Discovery" Is backed up by the
writings of the most eminent men In the
medical profession. A request by postal
card or letter, addressed to Dr. K. V.
Pierce, ltuffalo, N. Y., for a little book
of extracts from eminent medical au
thorities endorsing the Ingredients of his
medicines, will bring a little book free
that Is worthy of your attention if
needing a good, safe, reliable remedy of
knnwn eomjHmUlon for the cure of almost
any old chronic, or lingering malady.
