Cole, republican candi date for joint senator, was in town yesterday. Tomorrow and Sunday Cartano's Yellow Kids play the "Boosters" at Walla Walla. Snow fell in the mountains east of town Tuesday night and rain on the foot bills. There will be regular services at the Baptist church Sunday morning and evening. Bert Warren has returned from La Grande, where he disposed of bis ranch near that place. Rev. Conder is announced to preach iu the Christian church Sunday morn ing and evening. Hartman of Pendleton, dem ooratio candidate for oounty judge, is among the candidates who are visit ing Athena today Charles Brothertou has 150 aores of wheat which he pronounoes to be in excellent condition. He expoots a good yield this season. Hon. T. G. Halley, demooratio can didate for supreme judge, has been in Eastern Oregon the past week, looking after his political fences. . The Umatilla Indian team will play in Adams Sunday. 'Z Adams is said to have a good amateur ball team and is ready to meet any amateur nine in the county. v. ........ Mrs. Fred Bosenzweig is down from her home near Eltopia, Wash. She will speud a week or two visiting her husband, who has charge of the Bee Hive store in Milton. Will Jamiesou was in town yester day from Westou. He reports the mountain range iu excellent condition and says the number of cattle feeding there is not so large as formerly. The locust shade trees in Athena are gradually reviviog after the recent heavy frost when the tender foliage was blighted by frost. He will be incapac itated for work for some time. Dr. W. R. Campbell, democratic candidate for county treasurer is in the city today, meeting friends and making acquaintances. Dr. Camp bell came in this morning from the east end of the county, where he says bis politics 1 prospects look exceeding ly bright. Mrs. Ella Humoert, of Eugene, state president of the Christian Wo men's Board of Missions, will give an address in the Christian church this evening at 8 o'clock. Mrs. Hum-l.'-rt is a pleasing speaker. The governor will speak during the day of June 2, at the Pioneer's picnio at Weston, and in the evening of the same day he will speak at a demoorat io rally in Pendleton. - Dr. James Withyoombe, candidate for governor, will not be able to speak in Athena Saturday night, as an nounced. 'He finds it imperative to make a political canvass in Southern Oregon and may come to Athena at a later date. He addressed a meeting at Pendleton Wednesday evening, and a number of Athena republicans went down to hear him. W. D. Chamberlain, who was nom- uated by the demooratio party at the primary election for the office of joint representative of Morrow and Uma tilla counties, will not make the raoe, and his name will not appear on the ballots. Mr. Chamberlain finds tbat his business requires his undivided attention and while he appreciates the honors bestowed on him, by the party, it is impossible for him to aooept the nomination. Clean Up the Town. To the Citizens of Athena : As the time of the hot season is rapidly approaohing, it is necessary that streets, alleys, yards, eta be cleaned of all rubbish, manure, tin cansetc. The health of the people of the city and the appearance of the town demand suoh a Spring clean up. Knowing that if everybody works to gether the results will be muoh more satisfactory, I hereby request tbat eaoh and every person in the city of Athena : collect all rubbish around their premises and same will be hauled off free of charge on Tuesday, May 21st. It is a duty every oitizen owes to the city, as well as to himself, to. im prove the sanitary conditions in every manner possible, and I hope every one will aid in making Tuesday, May 21st, the best cleaning up day Athena has ever had.
