C1LLIS, PROPRIETOR, I THE GILLI8 LU1BER YARD i HEAD OF THE MAJORITY TICK ET IS IN TROUBLE. Democrats Are Beginning to Show Ac tivity and Strength All Over the State. Portland, May 10 Special Corres pondence The political oeuteta of Oregon are oa the verge of a stren uous campaigu and a sign of uneasi ness is abroad in the laud. These same centers are being stirred for it is well known that there is going to be a fight and a fierce one. The bead of the majority ticket is.in tionble there's no gainsaying tbat. They all admit it. The Democrats are begin ning to show sigus of activity and streugtb; the Republicans are rapidly taking measures to meet the issue. This principally as regards two offices in the state at large. The early part of the campaign is settling down to cases. Now tbat it has been decided to a certainty and by a slim plnraltiy that Dr. James Withy combe is going to bead the Republican State ticket and tbat by this same slini plurality the Gubernatorial aims and ambitions of Tall Timothy Geer have, for another time, been sent skedad ling baok to the pastures of new-mown hay, the doctor is makiug ready to tonr tbe state again, but not iu the inter ests of agriculture this time. , Also, tbe sovereign electors having decreed tbat Jonathan Bourne Jr., record and all, is tbe best man in Ore gon to go to the Senate, tbat kiDgbt of maobiue politics, is buckling on hia armor and taking measures to replen ish bis sack. Jonathan so they say only pungled up something like 175,000 to get tbe nomination in tbe first place, and now be will have to do it all over again. However this doesn't worry Jonathan, for he has done it before. As the Oregonian said a few years ago, if Jonathan has access to a bar rel, there's no question about what ho will do with it, for parsimony isn't one of his failings. The Oregonian knows, for it saw him in action at Sa lem at the Legislative sessions of 1895 aud 1897, when things were doing in tbo barrel line. Dr. Withycombe will probably stump tbe state. He makes a good talk and will please some people, although mauy don't thiufe be is made of gubernatorial timber. Again tbe probabilities are that Jonathan Bourne will not . If he does it will be a sur prise, for Jonathan generally does things by proxy. He has a barrel and will most likely holler down tbat. Jonathan will give mauy ;' a heeler a job for that's the way be works pol itics. He will spend a ton of money and will certainly send out a few hundred thousand ' moie "letters" gotten out by a oircnlar letter com pany and addressed from copies of tbe registratiou rolls furnished him for so much per bunch. That's tbe way Jonathan carried out his postal card propoganda last spring aud gave out to the voters tbe "individual letter" sell. Did you ever notioe tbat Jonathan rau best out iu the remote counties where he was least known? That's where tbe "individual letter" gag did its best work. But they won't stand for it again. ' , ; Tbe probabilities of Senator John M. Gearin coming home to take tbeetump has caused something of a flutter in Portland political circles. Indications are that the railroad rate bill will come to an early vote aud iu tbat eveut Senator Geariu will probably return to Oregon for the campaigu. If he does, this campaign, will be a whirlwind affair. Oregon has do mcta eloquent man tbau John M. Gearin. There was a time, when Judge Wil liams was looked upon as tbe star ora- HOUSE OF 0. W. B. ZEBBA NAE 1 ROWL'Y ESCAPES INSTRUCTION I. 1 Bolt Comes Throng'a Kitchen.Severely ; Stunning Both Mr. and Mrs. Zerba. Hon. T. J Kirk. Good Groceries, Coffee and Tea Hon. Thomas J. Kirk, the republi can candidate for State Senator for Umatilla county, was born iu Piatt county, Missouri, in 1839. With bis parents he crossed the plains to Orev gou, settling in Linn county, where he grew to manhood among the trials and privations of pioneer days. Com ing to Eastern Oregon iu 1871, Mr. Kirk homesteaded and purchased the land whioh now embraces his flno farm aud on which the city of Athe na is built. For years he engaged in farming and stockraising aud ubtil quite recently he was rated ns one of the most extensive farmers of Ibis part of tbe county. In 1878, with tbe late D. A. Richards, Mr. Kirk platted the original townsite of Ceu terville, (now Athena,) aud gave liberally of laud to get the town start ed. The fine publio school buildiug stands on ground given by Mr. Kirk, and three church denominations took advantage of bis generosity aud built churches on lots given by him. He was instrntneutal in haviug railroads build here. To the O. R. & N.Co. be gave the laud and right of way, and out of bis own pocket lie paid for the survey of tbe W.& U. R. fromVVallula Junction to this city. In 1888 the re publican party honored Mr. Kirk aud the people elected bim representative to tbe legislature and again iu 1 890 he was elected reprosoutative. He has served the city of Athena two terms as mayor and since the town was incor porated has been a member of the council, exoept one or two years. Re lative to his present candidacy, Mr. Kirk is a pronounced economist iu legislatiou aud if elected, promises to do what ho can for the best interests of the people of the slate and the ooun ty he represouts. Duriug the electric storm which passed over Athena and vicinity yes terday afternoon, a bolt of lightning - hurtled through tbo borne of O. W. B. Zerba, in tbe uoith part of town. Tho bolt came through the roof, pliutering the bathroom aud spending its force iu the kiothen. . Both Mr. aud Mrs. Zerba, who were in tbo kitchen, at tbe time, were seriously stunned by tbe shock, aud tbe west end of the house was soou in flames. the Bre department responded piomptly to the alarm and Hose Com p iuy No. 1 soon had tbe flames under cctrol. The property loss will prob iiblyj mount to fiiOO. At the time of the shock, Mr. Zerba was stauding ou a chair, look- iug for an article on a shelf, and was kuocUed to the floor in an iusonsible condition. Mrs. Zerbu was also pros trated Hud the services of a physician ' were required. . Tbo local telephone system was tem porarily put out of commission aud also the day power current furuiBned the city by the I'rusiou-Paiton Mil ling Co., owing to the fuses burning out. - Lightuiug played all kiuds of prauks at the home of A. J. Willaby. The juice jumped around promiscuously in every room iu tho house exoept the one in whioh tbe family were sitting. Splinters flew around and in the kitch en tbe linoleum was ripped up. , Shingles were. lipped from tbo cupola on tbe Dudley residence a quar ter mile east of towu, but no further damage was doue there. i Stock Meetings For the purpose of reoeiving appli cations for graziug during the season of 1908, within the Eastoru division of the Blue Monntain Forest Reserve, will be held at: Petidlotou, Ore., Muy 5. Senator Gearin has re placed bim and if be goes on tbe stump during this campaign the people of Oregon will hear a master orator and a man of s'atesmauly bearing. But Senator Goarin's return largely depends upo j the disposition of tbe rate bill. The piesideut is depending upon las vote and recognizes bim as otm of t lu men who is behind the admin-itraiiou in its determination ' in favor of the trusts and agaiust the people. ., , Governor Chamberlain's appenrat;ee On the stump has alurmed the Repub lican candidate for governor, foi' the chief executive is carrying tbe people with bim. He hus already delivered several telling speeches up the valley to huge crowds and his followers ate enthusiastic. The Democrats of Portland are ar ranging for a monster rally the Sat urday before election. Governor -i Chamberlain aud Senator Gcanu will address tbe people uud it is ex pected to make oue of the most telling deuioustratious of , tbe campaign. Both of these men draw a crowd iu Portland as has beou showu ou more than one occasion. FOR COUNTY TREASURER In this trinitj' should the grocer build his business temple.
