The present "spell of weather" has
put a temporary stop to farm work, but
a chinook wind is all that is needed to
start tbe plows going again.

dleton for a few days, visiting with
Mrs. Estes' sister, Mrs. C. E. Cooper.

When weather conditions become
favorable, contractors will begin the
construction of a fine residence for Mr.
D.JL Preston. The location of Mr.
Preston's new home will be just east
of the LeGrow residence.
Bert Cartano and Willis Bush left
Saturday evening via. Walla Walla
for Portland. Down near Wallula
they were held by a sand storm. Bert,
with other passengers, spent a miser
able, cold night in a sleeper without
fire. Mr. Bajh fared better, by being
up and "knocking about" to keep
warm. They were transported back
to Walla Walla Sunday morning and
returned home in tbe evening.
Last night was one of the coldest of
tbe season in Athena, the thermome
ter registering close to zero. Water
froze in most of the houses, for the
first time tbis winter. Today it is
not so cold, and all are hoping for tbe
arrival of the gentle chiuook.
Tbe latest republican aspirant for
United States Senator in Oregon to
announce his candidacy is E. L. Smith
of Hood River, who made up his mind
yesterday to run for that office instead
of for the governorship, for which he
has been boomed several months.
yjim Foss writes home that be, in
sWrnpany with Ora Rhodes has arrived
at, their homesteads after a somewhat
rough experience. At a point twenty
miles from Madras, the stage broke
down and tbe passengers were com
pelled to walk tbe entire twenty miles
into Madras. -:-
Last night a number of girls, at the
iuvitation of Mrs. Bruce Wallace,
gathered at ber home on Hunt Ave
nue, for tbe purpose of giving Miss
Elsie Myrick, who lives with Mrs.
Wallace, a surprise. The time was
merrily spent in pulling "taffy" and
playing games. .
Tickets for the Firemen's Ball,
which will be given at the Athena
Opera house Friday evening, will be
offered for sale tomorrow. Every
property owner in town, whether he
attends the ball or not, should help
the fire laddies out by purchasing a
ticket.
Claud Gatch, a republican candi
date for Secretary of State, was in
the city Saturday. He was accom
panied by M. J. Carney, of Pendle
ton. The gentlemen attended a meet
ing of Wild Horse Lodge, I. O. O. F.,
returning to Pendleton in a moonlight
drive, after the meeting.
Rev. N. Evans, a brother of Rev.
John Evans of tbis city, arrived in tbe
city today on a short visits to, his
brother.' Rev. Evans has been sta
tioned at Seattle in bis clerical ca
pacity, but is now on his way to Iowa,
where he will remain. His daughter,
Mrs. Blanche Artz, of Endioott, and
son, Frank Evans of Walla Walla,
are expected here today and will visit
their father at the home of Rev. and
Mrs. John Evans.
One of the most important meetings
held by the local lodge of Rathbone
Sisters took place Fiiday evening.
Ten new members were initiated into
the mysteries of the order and a num
ber of visitors were present Cards
furnished entertainment after lodge
work was over and refreshments were
served. A large delegation was pres
ent from Adams, the new additions to
the membership roll being from that
place. The work was done by the
Weston team, with Mrs. Harry Turner
at tbe head.
Saturday ' evening the Umatilla
County Development League was per
manently organized at a meeting held
in Pendleton. James Johns was chos
en as president, H. C. Willis secretary
and the following for vice presidents:

Hermiston ; G. W. Proebstel of Wes
ton, was chosen as president of the
league. The board of directors of the
league was selected as follows: F. F.

miston; F. K Yerxa, Umatilla; J. P.
MoManus, Pilot Rock; Leon Cohen,
