In Goodwin's Weekly, of Salt Lake
City, is found the following: 'Speci
al attention has been called to Oregon
during the past year because of her
Lewis and Clark exposition. Though
almost within the sound of the waves
of the Pacific broaking upon her coast,
the exposition was an immense buo
cess.and thousands of people have now
a clear idea of Oregon who but a few
years ago could not have bounded he
state to save their lives. And all
their impressions are happy oues, for
iu stately timber, rich valleys.glorifled
rivers and scenery that is a perpetual
delight, no state exceeds Oregon.
No people are more prosperous than
thoy j no people more country-loving.
Oregon is one of the great states of the
union iu all the attributes that make
a state great. ' '
The Pendleton Tribune has pub
lished everything about 0. A. Johns,
the Baker City gubernatorial aspirant,
with one exception. And that is his
picture. The Oregonian has the
"Trib." skinned a city block, for it
has printed C. A. 'b picture, and they
do say that C. A. 'is satisfied to lot it
go as it is. "Big fish swallowing

Johns is iu the raoe for a while at
least.

A battleship aground in New York
Harbor? The Portland Oregonian
always said New York was a schooner
port. The only real harbor in the
world is Puget Sound, where no vessel
ever got to the bottom, for the reason
that there is no bottom.
Boss Odell was gloriously defeated
in the speakership contest in the New
York legislature. One by one the
bosses fall. One by one others take
their places. Eternal vigilance is the
price of liberty.
UNMUZZLED PULPIT AGAIN.

While the question of an unmuzzled
pulpit is claiming attention of the
public, it may well cast its glance
iu the direction of a modest church
building that stands upon the corner
of East Fifteenth and Morrison streets
and barken to the sounds that issue
from thence. The pulpit of this
church is occupied nay, more, it is
"filled" by Rev. H. C. Shaffer. A
few weeks ago this minister proved
his quality tor boldness in speaking
the truth as he saw it by requiring
a total abstinence pledge from those
who sought admission to his ohurcb.
Opinions differ, of course, as to the
necessity or expediency of such a test
for church membership; but there is
but one opinion in regard to the
courage of the preacher in requiring
it.
Now comes the same man, with
Christian defence that berders on
meekness, but with words that cannot
be misunderstood, proclaiming that
the" "revival" meetings that were
conducted iu this city with suoh ap
parent fervor and earnestness a year
ago were ruled by political caucus
methods. SelJshness, he affirmed,
triumphed in the management of the
meetings, the advertising was im
mense, and, considering the spiritual
power ou hand, was greatly over
done; slates were in evidence in the
assignments ; pastors sat ou the plat
form like a row of Egyptian mum
mies aud prayed in turn; and the holy
spirit was not given the right of way.

is pervaded by a muoh more reverent
spirit than that which is possessed by

else may be thought of the effort or

doubt the courage or sincerity of the

PASSING OF THK "OKEGON."

And now it is the "Oregon" that
has to go the way of all battleships,
and pass from the first to the second
liuo of defense, to tbe duty in home
waters. This announcement will oo
oasiou not a little sentimental regret
among the American people, who will
over bear in mind the loug voyage
of this battleship from the PaciBo
const to Cuba, and the brilliant part
whioh she played in the chase of the
Spanish squadron on its flight from
Santiago harbor. It seems but a few
years ago that the ships of this class

("Oregon," "Indiana," and "Massa
chusetts") were heralded as the most
powerfully armed and armored battle
ships afloat. The claim was well
made; for not even the . big British
ships, of that day could match the
combination of four 13 inch and eight
18-ii ch guns and 18-inch facehard
ened armor found in the "Orggon"
class. Yet these vessels possessed in
herent defects as naval design and
construction advanced, which were
bound to tell agaiust them. Chief
among these was the fact that this
displacement of something over 10,000
tons was altogether too small to
effectively carry such a powerful ag
gregation of offensive and defensive
elements. For in order to float such
guns and armor at all, it was neces
sary to keep down speed, coal supply,
and the supply of ammunition, to a
point which was bound ultimately to
render these ships unable to remain
in our first line of defense. . The trend
of later battleship design is in the
direction of giving a ship high free
board, large displacement, and a
generous supply of ammunition and
coal, and the increased displacement
of about sixty per cent of suoh a vessel
as the batleship "Connecticut" over
the "Oregon" has been given mainly
to these features. The main battery
of the "Connecticut" in numbers 'and
weight is no greater than that of the
"Oregon," consisting of four 12's and
eight 8's as against four 13's and eight
8's. In the secondary battery there
is an increase from four 6 inch to
twelve 7-inch guns. The vastly great
power of the broadside is mainly due
to the great increase in velocity,
range, rapidity of fire, and energy of
the gun. The length of the ships has
gone up from 818 to 450 feet; the
breadth from 69 1-3 to 76 2-3 feet,
while the depth, on the other hand,
has been reduced from 28 to 26 1-1
feet, a most important advantage for
the latter ships. Displacement has
increased from 10,288 tons to 16,000
tons, and tbe speed has risen from 16
to 18 knots. The normal coal supply
has risen from 100 tons to 2,000; and
although tbe "Oregon" is credited
with a bunker capacity of 1,150 tons
as against 2,200 tons for the "Con
necticut," she cannot take on that
amount without practically submerg
ing the whole of her water line armor.
In the second line of defense, how
ever, for service in home waters, the
"Oregon" still has a useful life of
many years' service before her, and in
the naval annals of the country she is
destined to be placed high on tbe roll
of honor.

It will be observed that the govern

morally speaking. Indeed, it is prob
able that politically and morally
speaking he was never before iu com
pany so good.

Chicago utblotio authorities made
one of the richest hauls of prize
athletes iu the history ot Western
athletics yesterday, with the opening
of the Winter quarter. Seven of the
most talented men in this section of
the country registered their names as
students of the university. The new
acquisitions are Prince, formerly cap
tain of the Shattuck Military Acad
emy, who weighs 210 pounds and who
is declared to be a combination of a
Slaker and a Bezdek ; Taylor, who
weighs 200 pounds, formerly a star
all-round ahtlete at Dos Moines, and
is a f ullbaok strongly heralded ; Mad
digan, the 203 pound guard and all
round athlete from Englowood High
School; Moody, a star baseball, foot
ball aud track man from the Univers
ity of Maine; Dickinson, a pitcher
from Tufts; Comstock a half-miler
from Princeton, formerly a star at
Hyde Park High School, and Rudolph,
a pole vaulter from Crown Point, and
an intersoholastio champion.
This is not a fake or a satire upon
American collegiate methods. It is a
bona fide Associated Press dispatch
received at this office this morning.
All loyal Chicago alumni must now
