Mr. Power has returned to Reed &
Hawley mountain from the Dee
Chutes country, accompanied by his
son Philip Power, and son-in-law, Wni.
Johnson. They were dissatisfied with
that region.
The state census of the city of Wes
ton was completed yesterday by the
enumerator, Charles L. Pinkerton.
The total population is 823, a good
gain over 1000, when the figures of
the national census were 625.
Miss Mabel Crofutt, an. alumnus of
the E. O. S. N. S., is visiting friends
at Weston and will remain until after
commencement. Miss Crofutt has
closed a term of school at Antelope,
and is ou her way to her home at
Prosser, Wash.

The night watchman at Fletcher's
mill, Mr. Stewart, was brought to
town Saturday for surgical repairs,
having accidentally wounded his left
hand with an axe. A deep and ugly
gash was cut in the member, reaching
into the bone. The wound was dress
ed by Dr. Cashatt and is rapidly hoal
' iug. "
Fred Barrett and family left Mon
duy morning for Arleta, Oregon, a
suburb of Portland. They will make
their permanent home below, and Mr.
Barrett expects at some later dute to
engage iu the grocery business. He
has been employed for several yoars
with Sim J. Cully, and will be missed
by many friouds at Weston.
S. A. Burues and Lester O'Harra
left for Portland ou Friday's excursion.
Mayor Barnes, who has had charge of
the Weston end of the Umatilla coun
ty exhibit carried with him for the
display just thirteen strawberries
which oomplotoly filled a quart jar.
They were raised by J. Mt Ashworth
in the Weston country.

Mrs. N. A. Davis recently suffered a
paralytic stroke, whereby one side of
her face was partially paralyzed. She
is reported to be improving and it is
thought the trouble is only temporary.
Misses Lizzie Ham or and Jessie Wil
liams departed yesterday for Sulem
where they will take a course of in
struction in primary teaching, provid
ed the allurements of the Trail do not
prove too great an attraction.
William Rndio, an old time Milton
boy, but now looated at Walla Walla,
is visiting in Milton. Mr. Rudio is
engaged iu the business of shipping
beef animals to the Klondike, being
among the first to muke a shipment to
that region. He was a member of the
Washington legislature last whiter.
Photographer Fallgatter this week
presouted the Eagle with a photograph
of the oldest house ou Basket moun
tain. It was built about 85 years ago
by Mr. A. H. Wilder. It was occu
pied for several years by N. Pierce and
family and is the birthplace of Mrs.
F. A. Sikes of this city. It is a relic
of pioneer days and has att interesting
history
Sheriff Dixon of Garfield couuty,
Wash. , is in Milton today for the pur
pose of arresting a man named Butts,
who is charged with having taken
mortgaged proporty from the state and
selling it He will be taken back
tomorrow. Mr. Butts has beou iu
Milton for several weeks and has a
wifo and several children here. Sher
iff Dixon states that he believes a set
tlement cau be effected whereby Mr.
Butts will be released iu a few days.

"Uncle" George Johnson was at
Piue creek on a brief visit this week.
He says the alfalfa crop is much better
than was expected and all other crops
are looking tine.
Win. Wagoner and family, who left
bore last April for Ohio never to re
turn, passed through last Wednesday
on their way to Walln Walla. They
will locate somewhere iu this part of
the oountry.
One more week and tho strawberry
season will bo over. The season us
ually lasts six weeks and this one is
no exception. The supply was almost
as great this year as any year pre
vious, according to the shippers.
Joe Irons has a cherry tree that bents
tho one that George Washington dis
figured all hollow. Last Weduesday
he picked 13 orates off the single tree
aud he says there are loU of them still
on the branches that are not yet ripe,
Mrs. IX Hunt has gone iuto the
chicken business iu the right sort of
manner. She is uiakiug a specialty of
four (yellow) legged pullets. Up to
date she has only one,? but it is a dan
dy. It only uses its extra running gear
on Sundays and holidays. Mrs. Hunt
must be figuring on the preacher trade.
J. S. Vinson has resigned his posi
tion as postmaster and petitions are
now out praying for the appointment
of some other good man. Probably
there is no other occupation on earth,
except a railroad station agent, where
there is more kicking done by the pa
trons than that of postmaster in a
country office. Jesse Baskett aud
Wm. Clements seem to be the favorite
candidates.

Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Read returned
Tuesday from a visit with friends in
Athena.
Fred Blake and Wade Holdman
chartered an "auto" for a trip to
Athena Weduesday afternoon.
The city marshal tapped the city
main iu block 8 this week and fixed np
a watering trough for the convenience
of the dry quadrupeds passing through
town.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holdman of
Pendleton came up Wednesday morn
ing for a week's visit with friends and
relatives here. Mr. Holdman is just
getting around from a six weeks' ill
ness with rheumatism.
John Pierce, the dry laud straw
berry man, is still iu the lead. He is
now in the midst of his berry harvest,
which he says is yielding greater than
expected. He is unable at this time to
form an estimate as to what his yield
will be , but it will be large. All the
berries sold has brought him $2.25 per
crate and he has a number of crates
engnged ahead at that price.
Monday morning Lee Butler and
family pulled out for the northwestern
part of Montana where Mr. Butler ex
pects to engage in the sheep- business.
He is taking a bunch of horses with
him aud will be about six weeks get
ting through. Rube Wilson, the an
cient vacquero, accompanied the par
ty. Mr. WUhou has made that coun
try his home for some time, hence he
is not going to a strange country.
Summer Roundup.
The Indians are engaged in the
summer roundup of horses on the
Umatilla Indian reservation. Last
week was spent at the corralls on Mc
Kay creek, where 1,562 head of horses
were run into the enclosures.
