WESTON BOY SHOT DUDLEY CULLY DIES IN WALLA WALLA HOSPITAL. Young Companion Borrows Gun and Clainu Cully Took It From Him. Walla Walla, June 15. Dudley Cully was found Tuesday at midnight on the rear platform of the W. & CR. depot ehot through the head. The shot was heard by the eight operator iu the W. & CR. office and Conductor Atkins, who went around toward the end of the building where they inet a third persou, unknown, who said a man had just shot himself. When found the man was still alive, and up on the arrival of the police he was identified as Dudley Cully, and re moved to the Walla Walla honpital where -the physicians extracted the bullet, after which he died. The bul let was from a 38 calibre gun, and en tered the right side of the head just above and iu front of the right ear, and was removed from practically the same position the left side. He was a young man of about 21 years of age, and has been working at the livery stables around town. His mother and sister live in Weston, Ore. where ho also has a brother, Sim J. Cully, engaged in the general mercan tile business. He has two other brothers, Charles and Cliff Cully, who are also in Weston. He has for some time been a com panion of Harry Green, who, when seen by the Union reporter, said that he was with him early iu the evening down at the circus grounds and that they had both been drinking. He left Cully and a companion by the name of Harry Schonliver down on Seventh street, and claims he never saw him again until at the hospital. The theory of snicido is scouted be cause of the fact that Cully had no re volver and none was found whore the wounded man lay. Developments have discovered a doubt as to suicide. It transpires that the last man seen with him was Harry Schonlever, a 19 year old boy who has resided in this city for the past several years, and makes his home with his parents, 728 Carrie avenue. There, is an air of mystery about the case that does not look the best for young Schonlever, and if the theory of the police proves to be correct, one or two others may be involved before the straight of the affair is uncurtain ed. It is knowu that Schoulover and Cully were together all of the evening, and Schonlever yesterday couf esed to having borrowed the gun with which the suicide, or murder, if it proves to be murder, was committed. The two had boon to the circus together, and while there became involved iu a quarrel with some of the showmen. In the scrimmage they lost their hats, and after some loud talking came tip town about the time the show was over. Together they went to the East End saloon on Main street and Schonlever borrowed a U8 calibro revolver from a night bar tender. According to Schonlever, they theu started p the W. & 0. R. track for his home, and after reaching a box car that was standing on the siding near the water tank Cully noticed the gun sticking out of his coat pocket and throwing his arms around Schoulever's body de manded that he give it to him. He re fused, and Cully took it by force, as he was much the larger of the two. They theu returned to the depot, where Cully carried on an animated conver sation with one of tho telephone girls for about twenty minutes. Cully then walked out of the depot and Schon lever says that he followed him and picked up the gun and returned it to the barteudor at the East End saloon with the stateineut that Cully had killed himself. Schonlever states that he borrowed the gun to kill a sick dog nt home, but inquiry last night failed to elicit the fact that there was a sick dog eithor at his homo or in that neighborhood. The two boys havo been boon com panions for several years, having at tended the public schools iu this city at the same time, and so far as is now known havo never had any differ ences, but the theory of the police is that they were rivals for tho uttVetiou of tho same girl, and that if youug Schoulover killed Cully it was on this account, and while under the in lluenoc of liquor. The coroner's jury thoroughly in vestigtttod the cuso today and roturned the verdict that "Dudley Culloy came to his death from a gunshot wound, the gun beiuir in tho haudsf a person unknown." The district attorney has filed crim inal information against Harry Schon lever, charging him with murder in thetlrst degree and the young man is lieing held in the county jail with out bail. Burned in Hotel Fire. The Overlaud hotel at Myrtle Creek near Roseburg was destroyed by tiro nt an parly hour yesterday morning. Miss Hattie Dement one of the pro prietors whs burned to death aud sev eral other persona were more or less burned or injured ami a number of others narrowly escaped with their lives by jumping from tho building leaving their effects to the flames. The origin of the fire cannot be learn ed, though from statements of the night clerk and other employes that there were no lights in the house, the belief is growing that the fire was of incendiary origin. Miss Dement, the young woman who lost her life, died in her bed. She was a heavy sleeper and suffocated before aid could reach her.
