1 LARGE MOHAIR CROP MARKET STRONG WITH SLIGHT UPWARD TE3DAKCY. Thii Year'iClipin Oregon Will Ag gregate Nearly 40.000 Pounds Harvest It Over. Salem, Ore., March 29. The great mohair harvest of the itate is over and ia estimated that the clip this year will aggregate from 850,000 to 375,000 poundi which ia a alight increase over the crop of last year. The market, too, for this high grade and much demanded pro- duct has opened up well and 30 cent a pound ia being paid at the present time, which is considered a high average price. This ia another of the many producti in which the state of Oregon excels, the Oregon mohair being classed as the very beet oa the market and it com mands the highest prices. It ia chiefly a Willamette valley product as it is raised most extensively, almost exclus ively, in Folk, Yamhill, Marion, Wash ington, Benton, Linn, Lane and Doug las counties. There are a few email and scattered herds of goals in Eastern Ore gon, but the attention of the stockmen therttia devoted principally to raising sheep and cattle rather than goats. This is an industry which does not increase very rapidly, not so much as in the case of sheep because the goat is not as hardy an animal, especially when young, aa the kida require great care and attention in raising until they ar rive at a certain age, when they are more hardy than sheep. The goat in dustry is perhaps one of the least ex pensive of any in the state, therefore making the profits all the greater. The greater portion of the expense in raising goats ia in the" taking care of the kids, as they are very delicate when extreme ly young. About 75 per cent of the kids born are raised to maturity. The market ia strong and with a slight upward tendancy. The usual annual pool of the mohair has been formed by the Polk and Yamhill county Mohair Growers' association, the aggre gate holdings of these two pools amount ing to about 80,000 pounds which ia about the same as that of lust year. This pool will be placed on the market at Dallas on April 1. They are always successful as the growers usually re ceive from 2 to 4 cents above the market price. - ft5o ft I MONEY tO m L AL tr- utm h iwr ""i 1 Ull. .
