ATHENA, MARCH
21, 1905
Not since the days when the flower of
county division bloomed in the door
yard of the Milton Eagle has that paper
found a suitable bone to gnaw on until
it took issue with the Eastern Oregon
State Normal school at Weston as an in
stitution. Forgetful that in these days
of modern progress there has been evolu
tion in educational work a substitution
of the practical and the abolition of the
theoretic wherever possible, the giving
way of old foggy methods to those of
enlightenment and practical experience
in the same ratio that has marked the
expansion or tne American idea in
all other channels of progress, the Eagle
man persists in throttling normal
schools, and the only reason he can ad
vance is "cause 't aint like it use ter be
back in the states." lie don't like
kindergarten work in the normal; he
don't want music there, and the com
mercial department looks to him to be a
greater graft on the people than the
8500,000 state gift to Portland for the
, exposition. Then, horror of horrors!
There's the graduating class gleaning
practical knowledge in the training de
partment with real, live pupils in school
work, covering all grades up to and in
cluding the eighth. And to think the
state pays for this. It's too much for
the gympsum weed nerves, mind and
body o the Eagle, so it thumps away
with its little hammer at a state institu
tion located in its home county. Well
there may be some solace in the fact
that the Milton Eagle and the Portland
oregonian are for the same cause, but it
is doubtful if the Portland paper is cog
nizant of the fact.

least be settled.
Here s a "railroad on paper." With
the Northern Pacific surveyors here,
what is the reason a line could not bt
run from Dave Taylor's warehouse,
down below Jim Lieuallen's place, up
Spring Hollow, down Thorn Hollow,
across the mountains to the Grand
Ronde and Wallowa valleys? Events
more strange than this have happened.
Such a line would look good to us.
Think of Pullmans whizzing through
Athena on the W. i, C. B. Two trains
each way daily, Phil Stumpf a division
supt. and reporters perched on water
tanks catching snapshots of good old
"Joe" McCabe. This is just on paper,
you know. Realities hereafter.

road and 8100,000 for a right ot way for
Tlie Dalles Celilo canal, all in the in
terest of Portland, it is hardly becoming
in the Portland newspapers to complain
so bitterly against the appropriation of
a small amount of money for normal
schools to be expended in other parts of
the state, says the Salem Statesman.
Tlie normal school appropriation may be
rather heavy and may not be popular
with a majority of the people of the
Btute, but it is not just to dall these ap
propriations "grafts," for it is presumed
the sums allowed are for legitimate use,
at least. The proper way to settle tins

The United States seems destined to

increase of $34,713,847 over that of 1904,
and the largest ever made in the history
of the country. Of the recent estimates,
845,255,833 is set apart for the "increase

Incredible Brutality.
It would have been incredible brutal
ity if Chas. F. Lemberger, of Sy racuse,
N. Y., had not done the best he could
for his suffering son. "My boy," he
says, "cut a fearful gash over his eye,
so I applied Bucklen's Arnica Salve,
which quickly healed it and saved his
eye." Good for burns and ulcers, too.

oyt's Tree Supports
Now that the time for pruning your trees is here we want to remind you
that it ia also time to put on your tree supports and finish the job up at one
time. The Hoyt Tree support is something that will effectually prevent the
great loss of trees and fruit. No owner of fruit trees can afford to be without
them. Cost loss than the first cost of trees on an average less than lumber
required for props. They do not bruise the tree like props and bolts. They
are out of the way when cultivating the ground or gathering the fruit. When
properly put on they do not have to be changed for several years, instead of
every year like props. They are made in three sizes, 1', 1 and 2.

Sir John Fisher, the new senior naval
lord in the British admiralty, is the son
of a Cingalese woman and an English
man. The rise of the product of the
races of the East and of the West to
high commanding position in the navy
of a power both European and Asiatic
appeals to the imagination as especially
fitting.
