A London cablegram reports that ap
pearances indicate tbat the Marl
boroughs "are poorly off financially"
this year. It is not meant by that that
the duke has come down to smoking two
cent cigars or tbat the duchess must
"do her own work," but that the couple
bave been going at too swift a financial
gait and retrenchment is needed. After
all, wealth is very largely a relative
matter. The man who earns $1000 a
year and lives well within his income is
generally better off than the profligate
who squanders 8100,000 a year when his
income is but $50,000. The best part of
wealth is the easy feeling it imparts,
and many a modest fellow gets more of
that easy feeling out of a $1000 income
than titled spendthrifts can extract from
a million.
Justice Harry Barnes, recently elected
in Asbury Park, announces that for, two
months he will marry all couples free,
He also promises, in addition to remit
ting the usual fee, to give a pair of baby
shoes to every child - born to every
couple he unites in marriage in the two
months. He does not draw the line at
twins or triplets, but generously pro
vides for what ever may come along and
without reference to race or color. The
only requisite is tbat when the time
comes the happy mother shall display a
certificate proving she was married by
the justice in the period named. It
doesn't matter how many years hence
the promise has to be fulfilled, baby
will get the tootsies.
According to reliable European au
thorities, the colonizing nations in
Africa may soon face the unspeakable
horrors of a native revolt from one end
of the big continent to the other. This
land of mysteries and superstitions, of
innumerable tribes, each with its own
peculiar tribal government and its de
votion to the traditions of the inscrut
able past, has been subjugated, but not
conquered. So long as they regard the
Europeans as usurpers and interlopers
there will be the distinct menace of a
gigantio race conflict, in which the
millions of inimical tribes will forget
their differences to combine against the
common Caucasian foe.
