ATHENA, SEPTFMBER 13,1904
The case with which the metropolitan
newspapers secure features of all kinds
for their Sunday editions is no doubt a
constant source of wonder to a great
many readers. They have the pictures
of battleships, sunk thousands of miles
away while the ships are still sinking,
and street scenes in any part of the
world before the incident to be illus
trated is all off the wire. One street
scene from one Chinese town will an
swer nicely for any street scene in any
Chinese town, the more purticularly as
the most of the readers will never be
able to make personal comparisons, and
the scene might change before their ar
rival, and one battleship of a certain
weight looks a great deal like another
battleship. Recently one of the "great"
papers had as a Sunday feature the
pictures of the Igorrotes who went to
visit the president. The readers may
have marveled thereat, but the only
wonder is that the "enterprising" paper
did not have the pictures sooner, as
they were taken from a war department
publication, dealing with the Philippine
exhibit at St. Louis and may have noth
ing whatever to do with the delegation.
The Press acknowledges the cargo of
"burning coals" ignited by the tren
chant pen of Bro. Dodd, of the Pendle
ton Tribune, but we will state that as
yet there are no blisters on our scalp.
Mr. Dodd's article in question was a
sort of "yes, it is; no, it ain't" effusion,
giving one the idea that it was on a
still hunt for something it couldn't find.
Indeed, it is a great misfortune when a
man is unable to think, but surely it is
infinitely worse when a man is dimly
conscious that he is thinking and can
not for' the life of him say what it is
about.
The people's party declares that aliens
should not be allowed to own the land.
But the mombers of that party might
reflect that a great many aliens are
citizens as to all their local duties, and
to all intents and purposes, before they
are able to vote. The laws as they ex
ist have proved to be very satisfactory.
The secretary of finance in Bandit
Ruisuli's cabinet has demanded that
France cease to interfere with the cus
toms of Morocco. The customs of the
people of that country are almost their
solo mentis of support, when kidnaping
is considered one of the chief character
istics. Next time some large nation desires
to whip a small one the matter should
be submitted to a vote in which the
private soldiers will be allowed to par
ticipate. Photographs showing large
nations whipping smaller ones should
also be placed in the educational ex
hibits. Editor Rinehart, the psalmist of the
Bilver cause, declares that "Bryan is the
moBt finished product of the infinite."
That is better than being the most infi
nite product ot the finished, and Bryan
has been mentioned in both connections,
according to the love or hate of the com
men tutor.
The man who would declare that the
national senate should be abolished
would not be considered wise, but not
nearly all the people would question his
patriotism and his devotion to respect
able rule.
The people who assume to quote
"Liucolu's views on the tariff" should
bear in mind that Lincoln never had a
view of a tariff like this, not even in his
most distressful dreams.

If Elihu Root does not appreciate

by Henry G. Davis, he need not live so
Davis did not start in with any intention

panies. The republicans hope that they will
have better success in their efforts to
push the democrats into the sea than
has rewarded the labor of the Russians
directed to giving the pigmies of Japan
a salt water bath.

Soar Stomach.
When the quantity of food taken is
too large or the quality too rich, sour
stomach is likely to follow, and especial
ly so if the digestion has been weakened
by constipation. Eat slowly and not too
freely of easily digested food. Masti
cate the food thoroughly. Let five
hours elapse between meals, and when
you feel a fullness and weight in the

What Is Life?
In the last analysis nobody knows, but
we do know that it is under strict law.
Abuse that law even slightly, pain re
sults. Irregular living means derange
ment of tne organs, resulting in consti
pation, headache or liver trouble. Dr.
King's New Life Pills quickly readjust
this. It's gentle, yet thorough. Only

Buck's
Blast
We have just receivid our large Fall stock of these
heaters and we now have them on the floor. We
could use a whole page of this newspaper in which to
tell you of the many good qualities of this heater. Brief
ly we will say that the Buck Hot Blast represents posi
tively the very name of perfection. It is . the heater we
would sell you rather than any other, on account of its
admitted superiority over all others, and on account of
the friend making qualities.
Here is the heater that has entirely passed the experi
mental stage; a heater that will burn any kind of fuel
with equal facility; a heater that will burn, most satisfac
torily, the cheapest kind of soft coal or alack, and reduce
it to fine, white ash; a heater that will do the same work
for eight hours that the average stove will do in two or
three hours.
The principle is so entirely different the fiire keeping
qualities are so much superior to any other heater made
that you cannot really afford to use any other. ' Every
Dit of gas is burned, as well as the coal itself, and as soft
coal is principally gas, you can readily see this immense
advantage.
You get. a steady, even heat all night long by using
soft coal the same as if you used hard coal. It will
hold fire 24 hours, easy; it will actually save the cost
of the heater in two or three seasons, and is the best
and cheapest heater you can' buy. Come , and see
them whether you wish to buy or not.
