The ranges are well stocked, and it will be necessary for owners to unload a considerable amount of both cattle and sheep in order to re duce their herds and flocks to what can be cared for next winter. And this con dition prevails not alone in Eastern Ore gon but all over the range country, therefore there will be large numbers of animals thrown upon the market. But owing to the strikes in the eastern packing houses the demand will be lim ited and consequently prices must be low until after the strike is settled. By reason of the strike packers have lost large sums of money, and they will, when the market opens up again, seek to make themselves whole by keeping down the price of live stock. In the light, sandy soil districts of the Northwest, and also in the Alberta country, much of the plowing is being done with steam for motive power. In comparison the cost of steam plowing would appear to be less than plowing done by horses. By way of illustration, it takes 20 horses to pull five double disc plows. The horses would cost $1,750, the five plows (150, making an aggregate of 82,000 to start with. The five double diso plows do not plow as much ground as a 10-disc steam plow. It requires 5 men to run the horse plows and the same number to run the Bteain plow. The feed for 20 horses would off set the expense of coal and water for the steam plow. The test comes when it is found that the price of plowing is re duced by the steam plow. Already con tracts are made at $1.25 per acre. Governor Qeer likes to see foolhardy people risk their lives, but he would have a law made to deny him this pas time. In the Salem Statesman the gov ernor says: A sense of sorrow is natur ally felt for the poor fellow who lostrhis lifo while looping the loop at Salt Lake, but since it is the fate awaiting every foolhardy rattlebrain who pursues such means of livelihood, perhaps the sooner the lesson is impressed on those who are loft the better. Is there not a point in these unnatural exhibitions of idiotic physical risks beyond which the law should say men should not publicly go? The writer never fails to witness such freaks but thinks they should be pro hibitedin the interest of the fellow who doesn't know enough not to do it. Here's another one from bleeding Kansas: A young graduate in law who had had some experience iu New York City, wrote to a practitioner in Arkansas to inquire what chances there was in that section for such a one as he de scribed himself to be. llesuid: "lam a republican in politics, and an honest young lawyer." The reply that came discouraged him, for the old practition er answered: "If you are a republican the game law here will protect you, and if you are an honest lawyer you will have no competition." Now comes another expert who says the Panama canal excavation cannot be finished before 1905. The beauty of a prophecy of this kind is that it may take at least six or seven years to prove its falsity. The national banks of the country are very generally adopting the practice of operating savings departments in con nection with their regular business. In quiries as to the right of a national bank to operate such a department have been received by the comptroller, who finds nothing in the law to interfere with a national bank engaging in the business of a savings bank and accepting deposits subject to special contract. National Banker. Inventor Holland sayj that men will soon be able for $10 apiece to buy a set of wings with which it will be possible to fly 100 miles an hour. Get in your order early and avoid provoking delays. Mr. Holland should go to some reliable medium and call up the late Darius Green. " What did the Wogglebug say?" He woggled and woggled and this was his lay: "Woodski, old man, you're foxy and gay; but Athena is corraling her share of baled hay. Wind up your thinktank you grouchy old jay, and give us another bias kloshe roundelay." For neutral powers another correct definition of war is that it is a nuisance. Resolutions. Kite, Assistant Cashier Pi hp There probably isn't a reader of this newspaper who will not want to buy some house furnishing article or other be tween now and the holidays. So, 'tis proper for a store that feels quite sure that it is better able to serve you than any other to have a word with you at about this time. As things go in Walla Walla (and they certainly go to suit us) the Davis-Easer store has made probably the greatest suc cess of all stores here. At least we have tried hard and earn estly to do everything in the world that would ordinarily bring success to a store. The rapid almost phenomenal increase in our business would indicate that we are at least pleasing a great majority of the buying public; and, for this we feel highly gratified and thankful. Our customers always come the second and the third time, and this of course is the basis of our success. We want to, therefore, talk to those who have not tried trading here as yet. We want to say to you, TRY. If we do not make your trading both pleasant and profitable we incur a great business risk. At least that is the way we figure it, for to have a disappointed customer is about the worst thing that can happen td a store. You can rest assured, therefore, that you will like your trading here when you try. All Davii Kaser patrons are more than satisfied they are pleased. ' There will from now till the holidays be a whole lot of valuable, sensible store news from here. It will be news that thrifty and thinking housewives will appreciate and profit by. We will make it as interesting as possible. We'll be right glad and so will yon if you accept this invitation to be a Davis-Kaser customer. Next Door to the Post Office THE DAVIS-KASER CO.
