i There is one clause of the present
game law that should be perpetuated at
the next session of the Oregon legisla
ture. Reference is made to the protec
tion of the quail. This beautiful and
useful game bird is taking well to Ore
gon climate and as a consequence is
multiplying. The quail ia a semi-domestic
bird that loves the cultivated
field, the thick-growing bush, the grow
ing grass that bespeaks the presence of
man. It is preeminently the bird of
civilization, and is benefitted by its ad
vance, while all the forest loving birds
are discouraged in proportion as trees
are cut down and fields cleared for the
harvest. Most varieties of our feathered
friends decrease or disappear with the
destruction of the primeval forest, but
the quail follows the plow, the reaper
and the mower, being at its best in the
tall grass of June and the ripening
wheat of July, The quail is semi-domestic
and admirable in all the family
relations. When they mate ' it is for
keeps. No divorces go in the world of
quaildom, no infidelity, no human get
ting off with the old love before getting
on with the new. Master Bob White is
a model husband, father and provider.
Ever faithful to his spouse, a strict
monogamist, he assists both to hatch
and rear tbe young and watches vigil
antly over "mother" while she is at
tending to the nest, meantime consoling
her with his sweet monotone or warning
of the approach of enemies. " '
We have long been boasting of the
output of our gold and silver mines, and
many ill-informed people imagine this
to be the principal source of our nation
al wealth. Yet the egg crop exceeds in
value all the gold and silver mined in
the United States, being worth annually
over 845,000,000. According to govern
ment reports 60,000,000,000 went to
market in 1002, at an average price of
11.15 cents per dozen. Iowa stands at
the head of the egg Btates with an out
put of 101,000,000 dozen yearly. Ohio
comes next with 92,000,000; Illinois,
87,000,000, and Missouri 86,000,000. The
highest average price is 20 cents in
Montana, and the lowest is 7 cents in
Texas. The figures should be of suffici
ent Interest to set the Oregon hen to
cackling.
Junius Q. Groves, a negro farmer of
Kansas, seems to have answered in the
affirmative the question as to whether
his race is capable of conducting busi
ness on a large scale and becoming
financial factors in their communities.
Booker T. Washington likes to tell the
story of this man and his wife, who be
gan life without a dollar and now own
farms in the beet sections of Kansas.
,. Last jen Groves ( produced 172,000
bushels of the finest potatoes more
than any other one man is known to
have raised on his own land. He ia
called the "potato" king of America,
and his credit is good for $100,000 at
the banks any day. Evidently the solu
tion of the race problem lies along the
lines pointed out by Mr. Groves..
They have discovered that even the
bark of the cotton plant can be used,
and it is now selling at 20 cents a pound
in tte South. Thus the by-products of
cotton, such as the seed, oil and bark,
are collectively more valuable than the
platit, just aa those of the animal far ex
ceed those of the main carcass.
It would seem, says the East Oregon
ian, that Homer Davenport, in changing
his political base from democratic field
to the republican, shows a tinge of in
gratitude in making the change. Hearst
made Davenport famous by persistently
advertising the young cartoonist and his
work. The cartoons that made Daven
port the greatest measure of popularity
depicted the trusts in their process of
throttling the people and were demo
cratic in spirit. If his work was con
scientious then, and bis studied thrusts
at republicans and trusts resulted from
honest convictions, what will his change
of base amount to and how can he ex
plain his former winning strokes from
bis new standpoint. Davenport has won
all the fame he wants. It's money he's
after now.
The Japanese war does not seem to be
benefitting tbe American mule and
horse market as did the contest with the
Boers. The Japs do not seem to have
learned the virtue of the mule and do
not use these animals in their transport
ation service. They aro evidently short
on horses, too, the kind they use being
an inferior sort, much like our western
bronchos. For this reason they are in
ferior to the Russians in the cavalry
arm of their service, the only weak spot
so far developed in the operations of
these plucky and systematic fighters.
Those breeders who raise hogs for the
market must learn that quality in meat
is much more important than quantity.
Consumers want meat that tastes well.
If bacon, they like that which has been
well cured and not the product put
through hastily with the aid of creosote,
sham smoking and other devices. The
feeding, of course, has much to do with
the flavor of any kind of meat.
The Japanese must be good farmers
as well as good fighters. The 15,000,000
inhabitants live almost entirely on the
productions of a cultivated area about
one-third the size of Illinois.

The O. R. & N. will on August 10 run
a tourist sleeper from Walla Walla to
St. Louis via the Denver & Rio Grande
without change.
This car will be in charge of an ex
perienced man and all passengers will
receive the best of attention ; a stop qf 12
hours will be made at Salt Lake and 15
hours at Denver to enable passengers to
visit these cities.
This car will accommodate a limited
number and reversations should be made
