Already rails of the same weight are used on the elec tric as on the Bteam roads and well nigh equal speed is made in rural districts, while greater speed is made in city lim its. The cars are being made nearly as large if not so heavy as those on steam roads, and in nearly el! country places mails and light freight are carried as well as passengers. Trolley lines are connecting country towns which only could be reached by wagons, and by bringing them into communication with railroad stations are developing their business. Nearly every state in New England can now be crossed, north and south and east and west by electric cars and in some cases cities as far apart as Portland, Boston, Providence, Hartford and New York have been connected by 'the broomstick train." One of the latest developments of the system is the use for the first time by a steam and a trolley road of the same track. The New York Central is to use a stretch of track near Oxford, Mass., about 5 miles from Worcester, for delivery of coal to a station it cannot now reach easily. This track was laid and is used by the Wor cester and Southern Street railway. The fact that a locomotive and freight cars can be run upon rails ordinarily laid for trolley cars is opening up a wide field of speculative possibilities among railroad people. Jupiter Pluvius is playing queer pranks in Oregon this summer. The semiarid belt, which he usually neglects until autumn, is being treated to copious showers, cloudbursts, etc., while the Willamette valley, which has the reputation of being always damp, is sadly in need of rain. This may be an equalization of favors, for it Is on record that in past seasons when the valley was turning off bumper crops the country east of the mountains was suffering for want of rain. The recent showers in Eastern Oregon have practically assured an unusually large yield of spring wheat, and this, with the winter wheat which was already safe, will swell Oregon's agricultural output to more than the usual proportions, in spite of the short age in the Willamette valley. Oregon lan. A London paper tells the story of a small child who, passing through a street covered with strain, asked his mother what it meant. The mother re plied that hoaven had sent Mrs. So-and-so a new baby. The child's comment was: "Mother the baby must have been awfully well packed." A Chicago woman seeks a divorce be cause her husband has not smiled in ten years. Popular judgment should be suspended until the husband tells why he has uot smiled. Three men of the name of Mudd are ruuningfor congress in one Maryland district. It they get along without slinging any it ought to be made a mat ter of record Was there ever a distinguished humor ist who wasn't devoted to a sympathetic and loving wife to whom he owed much of his inspiration and happiness? Mark Twain'a case was largely typical. Numbers of papers just now are pub lishing lessons in swimming. Most of the lessons are just about as clear to the ordinary man as a baseball score is to a Hetty Green has taken the trouble to deny another report that she has given away a lot of her money. Hetty must believe there is somebody somewhere who thinks she would really do- such a thing. " A Chicago barkeeper has been fined 810 for impersonating a newspaper re porter. The question naturally arises, where did the barkeeper ever see a re porter? V The leap of an archangel from heaven to earth is nothing compared to the mighty spring of a small woman jump ing at conclusions. Mr. Rockefeller does not want to own the earth. All he asks is possession of the oils and ores and other things of value that may be inside of it. Settle Tip. If you are indebted to R. Does Mot Suffer from Appetite of . Some Species of Bird. There is hardly a single group of In sects which does not suffer from the ap petite of one or more species of bird, says Nature. The eggs and larvae are dug and pried out of their burrows tn the wood by woodpeckers aud creepers; those underground are scratched and clawed up to view by quail, partridges and many . sparrows; warblers and vlreos scan every leaf and twig; fly catchers, like the cat family of mam mals, lie in wait and surprise the insects on the wing, more particularly those flying near the ground, while swifts, swallows and martins glean a harrp;t from the host of high-flying Insects. When we think hummingbirds are tak ing dainty sips of honey from the flow ers they are In reality more often enatcblng minute spiders and flies from the deep cups of the calyxes. When night falls the Insects which have chosen that time as the safer to carry on the business of active life are pounced on. by crepuscular feathered beings; the cavernous mouths of whip-poor-wills engulf them as they rise from their hid ing places and the bristles of night hawks brush them Into no less rapacious maws if perchance they have succeeded In reaching the upper air. A DUEL TO THE DEATH. Thrilling- Flnt la Which a Fastoos Robber Lost His Life la Australia. A thrilling duel to the death Is re- called by the announcement In the Sydney Government Gazette of the ap pointment of Superintendent Walker to one of the most Important police districts of New SouNh Wales. Super intendent Walker Is the Constable Walker who killed Capt. Thunderbolt, o famous Australian bushranger and mail robber, on May 25, 1870. Thun derbolt, whose real name was Freder ick Ward, fired at Walker and galloped away. Walker returned the Are and pursued. Both men fired at each oth er as opportunity offered. The Rocky river confronted the outlaw, but he took one daring leap. His horse was killed by the constable's next shot. "Are you married?" cried Thunderbolt from the middle of the river. "Yes." replied Walker.' "Well, remember your family." "Oh, that's all right. Will you come out and surrender?" "No; I'll die first." "Then It's you and me for It," said the constable, as he plunged Into the river. The duel continued in Ue water until Thunder bolt was mortally wounded. He died next day. . 1 ' ' 1 . 1 "1 find Thud ford's Black-Draught a good medicine for liver dinease. Hot) red mv ton after he bad snent J100 with doctors. It is alltlie med icine I take."-MR8.
