THE HEPPNER FIRE DOES $4,000 DAMAGE EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING. Drug Store, Barber Shop and Con fectionery Stock Burned Building Destroyed- Heppner, May 26. Fire of unknown origin which broke out in the wooden building acroB from the Palace hotel in this city early this morning complete ly destroyed the big building and did considerable damage to the stock of drugs carried in one of the departments, the barber shop and confectionery store. As soon as the fire was discovered the alarm was turned in and every effort made to extinguish the flames. Seeing that the building was doomed volunteers came to the assistance and helped to re move the f u mishings and goods in the stores. The drug stock was not a total loss, but the barber shop was ruined as was also the confectionery store. The building was owned by J. W. Morrow, tax agent for the O. B. & N who is out of the city at present. The drug store was owned by J. A. Patter son, the barber shop by Joe Gibson and the confectionery store by Mr. Crossley. The total loss is about $1,000. A DOUBLE FUNERAL. Mother and Daughter Lie Dead in Same Kouin. Pendleton, May 21.- Miss Mary Thome died at the family home, No. 103 Lincoln street, yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after a lingering illness of consumption. Miss Thome was 27 years of age at the time of her death, and was the youngest of a family of nine child ren, most of whom are now living. She was the daughter of Jonathan J. Thome, one of the well known farmers of Cold Springs, who moved into the city of late with his family. This morning at 3 o'clock Mrs. Mar garet Thome, the mother of the girl who died yesterday, passed away after hav ing suffered for some time with pneu monia. Mrs. Thome was 77 years old, and had been a resident of this county tor many years. Mr. and Mrs. Thome came to Uma tilla county 17 years ago from Dakota, and have lived at Cold Springs until lately. The funeral of the mother and daught er will be held at the Thompson street M. 15. church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rcvv Robert Warner conducting the services. The bodies will be ship ped to Walla Walla on the morning train where they will be buried in the family cemetery. LOST TWO, WON ONE. I.oio to Dayton and Whitman and Win From Freewater. Dr. Stone's Maroons arrived home from the north Tuesday noon after hav ing played three games of ball. Sunday they played a hard game at Dayton and were beaten by one score, the finish be ing 10 to 9. The Athena team had Day ton going up to the last half of the 0th, the Bcore standing i) to 6 in favor of the Maroons, but in Dayton's half they Bcored four runs and won out. La lirashe and Mc Bride were Athena's battery, and Phillips and Mcintosh for Dayton. Each pitcher struck out 12 men. La lirashe gave 2 bases and Phil lips 6. The score in the Whitman game stood 8 to 10 in favor of the Collegians. Un til after the 4th inning Whitman could get no further than second base. Athena used three pitchers Prescott, Nelson and La Dnislie. Tuesday, with Nelson in the box, the Maroons slaughtered the Freewaterites. Score, 25 to 6. MAYBERRY IN THE RACE. (To the Voters of Umatilla County, Oregon:) The report has been circulated over the county that I have become enraged at the democrat ic and republican managers and with drawn from making the race for school superintendent; but it's all a mistake. Wo are in the race until 6 o'clock p. m. June 6th, and there to win.- Anything to the contrary is false. Respectfully, W. S. Mayberry, Democratic Nominee for County School Superintendent. Suit on a Note Hans Ilellberg has brought suit against Joe Forrest for the recovery of a note for $G50 with interest at the rate of 8 per cent. The note was made on June t), 18, and there is still due on it 8433, with interest since June 7, 1808. The plaintiff asks also for interest and 850 attorneys' fees, and the costs and disbursements. Hailey & Lowell are the pluintiff s attorneys. Skin Grafting Proceeds Over 100 grafts of human skin the sixe of a silver dime have been applied to the burned surface of Mrs. William Nave's back, at the Walla Walla hos pital. This afternoon another call for volunteers will tie issued when it is hoped to secure at least 40 more grafts, which will be sufficient to cover the burned surface. Nino out of ten of the gnfta grow, and her condition is now hopeful. For Sale.
