With several prospective brick build
ings to be constructed on Main street
for the accommodation of business firms
the building era of 1904 indeed looks
exceptionally bright for Athena. The
year just closed assisted materially in
the development of Athena's growth a
compilation of which will appear in the
Pkess issue of February 5. Athena
never was boomed, nor will she ever be
boomed. All along she has enjoyed
that thrifty, substantial growth which
comes only to the Uwn in point of lo
cation and business conditions, affording
natural facilities for home-making, back
of which lis resources of sufficient mag
nitude to form the foundation of a live
town. The assurance given that power
from the Walla Walla river will bo har
nessed and put to practical use before
the end of the year, means much to the
town, both for lighting and power pur
poses. The present year holds out
bright prospects for Athena, but paste
it in your bat that no "boom" is on.
Chairman Lacey, of the public lands
committee of the house, appeared before
, - the public lands commission December
23d and presented an elaborate argu
mout against the repeal of the commuta
tion clause of the homestead act. By
statistics he showed there had been no
- alarming increuso- iu' . the number of
commuted hitaesteads in lute years,
and therwa nothing whatever in the

.-number of frauds had been perpetrated
' unJer that law. On the contrary, he
maintVmtri-tlit the department has
- it in its power to administer this law so
as to prevent frauds. Lacey admitted it
might be advisable to increase the price
per acre to be paid on commuted en
tries, lie thought $3 an acre would be
the maximum price justified, however.
Representative Mondell of Wyoming,
made a similar argument and Senator
Fulton of Oregon, expressed the off-
hand view that no reason existed why
the commutation law should , be re
pealed. lie was convinced that no par
4icular fraud was perpetrated under its
provisions. -','
Lake county, with all the vim of a
vigorous age, is registering a kick. Sbe
has reason to, tor it is stated that the
forestry inspectors, who have been look
ing over the temporary withdrawals of
land in that county, will recommend
them to be made permanent. In other
words, should the report prove true and
action be taken upon the purported
recommendations, Lake county will be
little more than a national park. Al
most its entire area will be included in
the reserve which is the lurgeBt in the
i-tate. Under the circumstances, Lake
county should do something more than
kick. It should take immediate aud active
Kteps to prevent as great a blight upon
its future cureer as could be visited up
m it. Inertness at such a time should
bo relegitod to the background and a
vigorous congressional protest mustered
into service.
The richest nation in the world is not
the United States, but a nation within
the United States. The Omigas of In
dian Territory are credited with bank
accounts that amount to nearly $5,000
per individual, and the average holding
of land is 87 acres, valued at $10 per
acre. Here then, is a case where ''Lo,
the poor Indian," is better off, firmn
cially, than even the white citizen of
Massachusetts, the richest of American
commonwealths It must be confessed
that be is somewhat ahead of the ave
rage Umatilla "poor Lo."

The ternble loss of life in the recent
theatre ..fire at Chicago has been the
means of much attention being given to
the condition of buildings fu which
large numbers of people congregate
throughout the entire country. Church
es, theatres and publio halls are being
reaiodolod throughout. Sufot;- ii'thf
watchword in every large city in the
land. Down to the most obscure ham
let, the terrible lesson has burned its
way, and the fire drill in the public
schools is once more practiced punctual
to the most minute detail.
Chas. F. - Martin says the manipula
tions of the packing house . trust the
past 18 months has cost livestock breed
ers and feeders $750,000,000. While
these figures seem almost incredible,
those made by F. D. Coburn, secretary
of agriculture of Kansas, bears Mr.
Martin out. He says the value of cattle
in Kansas has decreased $11,000,000.
These startling figures are enough to
arouse stockmen to some speedy action.
These gigantic combinations against the
livestock interest must be met by the
stockmen in a united form.
Sixty-two years ago a man named
Jones moved from Kentucky to Dade
county, Mo.', taking with him his family
of 10 children, says the New York
Tribune. At a reunion recently held at
Everton, 1,019 of his descendants were
present, and there are a few who were
unable to attend. Almost all his de
scendants have married and settled in
the same neighborhood in southwestern
Missouri. And yet such inexperienced,
evaporated specimens of humanity as
Col. Wood must be shown.
1 Oregon's delegation in congress is
putting forward every effort in behalf of
an appropriation for the Lewis and
Clark exposition. In their efforts they
are supported by the delegations of
every Pacific coast state. There is no
question but what an appropriation will
be made by congress for the proposed
1905 fair, but the matter to be settled
now, is how much. .
The law passed by the last legislature
and which now goes into effect has ad
vanced prices of recording deeds, mort
gages, etc., to a considerable extent.
The price fixed by law is 25 cents per
folio for every 100 words. Heretofore
the charges have been nominal. JThe
increased prices of recording will in
crease receipts for the office.
' When Margaret Dinwiddie died at
KushviJlc, Ind., 60 years ago, she left
an estate valued at'880,000. There was
litigation between the heirs, and the
other day the last fragment of the prop
erty, worth $15,000, was turned over by
order of the court to the lawyers en
gaged in the several suits growing out
of conflicting claims.
The dispatches soem to indicate war
between Jap.n and Russia at aa early
date. While it might be folly for Japan
to tackle a nation as strong as Russia,
the island nation may put up a remark
ably good fight and force the strongest
power on earth to recognize her de
mands.

That the lines will thus be drawn
throughout the state there is little
doubt.
It is the opinion of Secretary Cortel
you that publicity rs to the affairs of
great corporations, which have been
granted - important privileges affecting
the public, would be beneficial. This
was the view taken by congress, and a
a law lo this effect was enacted. It is a
law that should be enforced.

pussy willows will be getting kittenish
again and spring will bounce along with
her lap full of buttercups. .

a million and a half barrels. Somebody
must have taught Europeans to make
