Mr. Dick Martin and family, of Har
ney, are in the city and will rent a house

The "kids" of Athena were delighted
Monday and again Tuesday morning,
with the first snow of the season. How
ever it soon melted away.
Lon Williams was over from Milton,
near which place he resides, Monday.
Mr. Williams did not operate hia steam
threshing outfit this season.
An agent for Miller k Sons, nursery
men of Milton, was in town Tuesday
delivering fruit trees and shrubs on or

different farmers were recipients of fruit
trees. Thus the orchards around Athena

occupied by J. W. Chapman. He is
prepared to do first class house painting,
decorating and paper hanging, and
makes a specialty of high-class buggy
and carriage painting.
The high wind Wednesday played
havoc with fences, sheds etc. in this
vicinity. The club house of the Athena
gun club was blown several feet and de
molished. Numerous windmills are out
of kelter, also; "but not the one the

Angus McDonald is over from his

will spend the winter here. lie has
been in ill health for some months and

Anderson is a cousin of Mr. Barnett and

tist and comes here with the inteftuofi

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Tittsworth, one

this week got hold of a can of concen
trated lye, and with the usual perversity
of babyhood, attempted to eat some of
the fiery stuff. Her lips and mouth
were badly burned, but fortunately none I
went down her throat'urease and via-'
egar were immediately applied and the
little one soon recovered. :
MsAs a result of the efforts of Principal
M. Li. Watts, the Athena public school
is again on the credit list of the State
university at Eugene. Mr. Watts is
pushing the Athena school to the front
in a manner that is thorough and per
manent. He is of the opinion that at
least two students in the high school
will take advantage of the university
credits and attend next year. f

The Friday Afternoon club held a
very interesting meeting at the home of
Mrs. Minnie DePeatt, last Friday. Se
lections from Oregon history were read
by Mesdames Watts, Jarman and Cox.
Mrs. A. C. Mclntyre entertained the
ladies by reading "Sacajawea," in a
most pleasing mannersTour new mem
bers were added to the club, which now
enrolls about fifty in membership.
Earl, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
T. King was taken to Walla Walla by his
parents last week to be treated for a
case of blood poisoning. An eruption
of the skin was noticed on his cheek,
which soon spread to the eyes, resulting
in a badly swollen faceyThe little fel
low is improving and no danger is now
apprehended of injury to the eyesight.
John King had an experience with a
runaway team, east of town Monday,
while returning from Weston. "The
neck-yoke strap came off in front of old
"Jerry" and of course something was
doing. John and the hack seat were
dumped together to the ground and the
team hiked for the barn. In passing
down Main street, Dell Bros, delivery
horse becamg frightened' and took a
hand, in the spin. It ran up Third street
and was captured before any damage
resulted. '

lished anothrr opera house in Baker
City, has made arrangements to add
A'hena to the list which will now in
clude Portland, Baker City, La Grande,
Pendleton, The Dalles, Athena, Walla
Walla and Lewiston. Beginning Satur
day, Nov. 21, the entire Shields compa
ny will be seen in Athena every Swtur
day night during the winter, with a new
company each time. They will open
with LiVerne's Big Vaudeville slmw.
Prices of admission will be 25, 35 and
50 cents. . Handsome and useful pres
ents will also be given away free. No
doubt of a big success.
