DOHTWAIITA ROAD PRESENT COHDITIOffS SATISFY WAtLOWA PEOPLX.- Some Enterprising Han Could Make a Fortune By Making Improre mtnU at Wallowa lake. . Brown as a berry, Kit Carton) travel ing freight agent for the Northern Pa cific, has returned from a thousand mile trip on the bead waters of the Snaka and : 41. Ur.1UMAiiMp..AnniinvinfftlirAi weeks, says the Walla Walla Statesman. Mr. Carson was a passenger on the . new steamer Itnnaha plying on the Snake between - Lewiston ' and s the I ton aha mines, on her maiden Toyage two weeks ago, and describes the new service made possible by the enterprise of Eastern men as opening up to travel and capital vast territory in the upper Snake river country, much of which is little known to the outside world. Mining interests on the upper Snake, Mr. Carson declares, are reaching' huge proportions and a vast section of the country will be developed Uor egncul tural purposes within a few ears. The trip up stream was without incident ex cept where lines had to be run ashore to aid the little boat to stem the swift water of the rapids.' From the Imnaha sec tion Mr. Carson "staged across country to W allowa, and has spent the past week in the vicinity xjf the lake and Joseph. "The Wallowa country and valley is a veritable paradise and the inhabitants know it," le said "The result is they do not care for immigration or even a railroad. They are rolling in land and wealth. . Conditions, around. Wallowa lake show much of the primitive state of 60 years ago.' There are a' few Scatter ing farms and campers as usually make it headquarters for a few weeks' sport in hunting and fishing, but as to pernia nent improvements or enterprises there are very few. ' An enterprising man with some capital could turn the head of the lake into an excellent summer resort and make money at it. ; "It is necessary of course to stage it in for 50 miles, Elgin being the nearest railroad point." DURKEE GIVES ANSWER. Aiiwinw Kaitarnar'a Qatluni In an Intelligent Manner. ' Col. E. 8. Durkee, who ran a paper at Helix a few years ago and now edits the Tekoa Blade, still indulges his fondness for handing out useful information, says the Leader. "Once he advertised a large assortment of Helix bachelors, strongly emphasising their points of excellence, and nearly all have since been snapped up aa matrimonial bargains. Just now he turns his attention to an Eastern in quirer as follows: The Blade is in receipt of a letter from u resident of Pennsylvania, inquiring ubout the Palouse country and asking a "few simple questions." We take plea sure in giving a few simple answers: Q. HoW doei land sell in your sec tion? A. It depends a good deal on which real estate agent is handling it. Some of the Spokane agents are gifted with imagination enough to sell it for four times what it is worth. Q. How is water and liow -do you get it A. The water is quite wet. Some draw it from the hydrant while some get it from the ' bartender, in a separate glass. Q. Do hogs thrive? A. They do. One old sow with which ibe writer is personally acquainted, has thrived twice during the past year. " Q. How are your titles? A. Plenty. Our town marshal has 17. We have numerous colonels and several judges... Q. How many classes of people hare you? A. Two. Those who subscribe to the Blade and those who don't. Q. How is religion? Is it much thought of? A Quite well, thank you. It lies around here perfectly free. It has a good reputation and is spoken of very highly in the churches. . - Q. Do the Indians bother the whites? A. They do. They are very bother some when drunk. It sometimes both ers the whites to beat them ' playing base ball. , Q. How much money does it take to start in your country? A. One dollar and a half. This will pay for the Blade for one year. You can then make your peace with - your maker and start in. . Q. Who are the principal men in your town? A. Judge Dickinson, Steve Coffin and the editor. f- Q. Are the people honest? A. Thsy are very honest since the new law was passed prohibiting poker playing. Q. . What are the occupations of the people? " A. ; Some work in insaue asylums, some guard jails and some aaswsr silly questions. Fall SS Waal. Arthur Davia, a young bridge carpen ter from Baker City, about 33 years old, was seriously hurt Saturday morning on the little Dry creek trestle three mile 'east of Weston, which ia being renewed by the 0. R. A IS'. Mr. Davia had both fore-arms broken and bis head badly bruised, but was fortunate to'escape with his life. He fell 25 feet from one end tff the trestle, striking head fore most upon a bent, and those who wit nessed the accident expected to find him an inert and lifeless mass.
