President Roosevelt , has begun. . to
turn his attention to his intended trip
to the Pacific Coast, but has not yet
arranged all details. He is disappointed
thai it was necessary to have an extra
session of the senate, as it will, necessi
tate cuttiDg down his trip somewhat and
- shortening his stay at several important
points; probably in the Yellowstone
Park. .
His only stop of any length in Oregon
will te at Portland, where he expects to
spend a day and possibly a night. At
what other points he will stop in Oregon
will depend upon' the hour he crosses
over from California, on his way up the
Coast. If the hour is suitable, hewill
undoubtedly make a short stop at Salem
and possibly at Boseburg, Albany ani
Eugene " If, when , he reaches the
Coast, the president finds his time is be
ing overextended, '.he will have to cut
down his stops at Portland and Salem.
As he goes north from Portland the
president will folio w Jargely , the route
laid out by President McKinleyy going
first to Chehalis", on to Olympia, then to
Tacoma. Ha is being urged to go
f rom Tacoma by boat to the Bremerton
navy yard, thence to Seattle, giving him
a chance to view the Sound. ;
After crossing the. mountains as he
turns eastward,; the president contem
plates running to North Yakima, pos
sibly to Walla Walla, and certainly
. through Spokane. His only stops of any
length in Washington will be at the
three principal cities. 11 a. will probably
spend not more than five davs in the two

There is little snow, hardly as. much 'as
in this valley, but the temperature is
hovering below freezing point ', and
spring work is being greatly delayed in
conBequenco. Unless a thaw occurs
soon the farmers of the Palouse wheat
belt will have to rustle to get their wheat
in this year in time.
The tew dry days of last week were
improved to the utmost by farmers of
Southern Oregon, who are behind with
their work.baving been greatly hindered
in their farming operations by the ex
treme wetness of the winter. Since the
rains started, early in November, there
has been hardly any time until last week
when it has been possible to get on the
land to put in grain.
. 910,000 From Nebraska.
Nebraska will appropriate 810,000 for
the Lewis and Clark fair. This is di
rectly due to the efforts of ex-Governor
T. T. Qeer, who is at present in Lin-
ooln. Previous to his coming no ap
propriation was contemplated. The
following is the message received at
Portland from Mr. Oeer: "Had meet
ing today with Governor Mickey and
the joint ways and means committee of
the Nebraska legislature, and secured a
promise of a $10,000 appropriation. . No
appropriation whatever had been con
templated before my arrival." i .
: Milton to the Columbia.
A survey, the exponse of which will
be defrayed by popular subbcription,
will be inade shortly of the proposed
railway from Milton to the Columbia
river, near Wallula. The committee
appointed by .the board of trade to make
an informal investigation of the possi
bilities of the road states that no serious
engineering difficult es would be en
countered, and the board of trade wants
to have everything in readiness to do the
grading and lay the rails at short notice
if the upper river is opened to naviga

Joseph McCabe, vice-president and
manager of the Washington & Columbia
River railroad, gave out the statement
that just as soon as the development of
electrical power on the Walla Walla
rivnr whs completed the shops of the W.
A U. It. railroad would be moved from

i pii.-r tbrrv without doubt," said
Mr. McCbs "and electricity will be
transmitted to Walla Walla within 12
months."

N. A. Davis, -of the bank- of Milton,
has advertised to receive bids for. the
real estate belonging to the estate of
Amelia I. Harris, deceased, at any time
prior to March 28. Mr. Davis is admin
istrator of the estate, and the real estate
consists of one of the best wheat farms
in Umatilla county, of about 860 acres,
including a good house and some bot
tom land on Couse creek. There is also
160 acres of . pasture land and a fine
residence property in Milton. Mr.
Davis will gladly f urnish any informa
tion ; regaiding the property that is de

About 60 Knights of Pythias from
Pendleton attended the convention at
La Grande.' Among the especial . tea
tures of the occasion was an addtess by
Grand Chancellor Maloney, a banquet
and the initiation of 66 candidates int'J
the Dramatic Order of Knights of Kor
rasan.: The only lodge in the state of
this degree is at Portland, and a Port
land team conducted , the initiatory
ceremonies. , Umatilla county won all
four of the drill prizes. The judges
were Past Grand Chancellor Davis, of
Dayton, Wash., and Messrs. Grant and
Aldrieh of Portland. ' -
To Improve Four Farm.
The county commissioners are wrest
ling with the, question of specifications
and estimates for improving the poor
farm. Not having any specifications
completed as yet, the court is not ready
to call for- bids or definite estimates.
One of the court stated that a suitable
dwelling and hospital for the farm would
probably cost $7000 or very near to that

Senator Fulton recently called on
Secretary Hitchcock to make inquiry as
to reports that have been printed from
time to time saying it was the desire' of
his department to .remove Surveyor
General Meldrum from office and to ap
point a new man to that place. He
said afterward that he - was somewhat
surprised at the emphatic way in which
the secretary confirmed the reports and
insisted that Meldrum could not longer
be tolerated. Land Commissioner Rich
ards was equally emphatic' in insisting
on a change. . r ; - ";
Senator Fulton says he will consult
with ' bis colleague, and probably the
two , will join in making a recommenda
tion of Meldrum's successor early next
week; When this recommendation is
made, it will no doubt be acted upon at
once, and the name of the man . recom
mended will. be promptly sent to the
senate and the nomination be confirmed.
Secretary Hitchcock has been anxious
to appoint a successor to -Meldrum for
several weeks, ever ' since Jhe severe ad
verse report made by the inspector, but
Senator Mitchell has not been able to
give the matter his attention. With the
assistance of his colleague,, however, he
will now be able to act. ' There is as yet
no. intimation as to who, will be recommended,-although
it is understood there
are a number of candidates for the office,
which pays a salary of $2000
