' La Grande will hold a special electton July 29 for the purpose of voting on the proposition to issue bonds to the amount of $20,000 for the construction of a school bonne. The origin of the fire is unknown but it is thought to have been started by sparks from a passing locomotive. Tbe Pendleton banks and ppetoffice have not yet received a sufficient amount of revenue stamps to conduct regular t business. However, business is allowed to proceed by authority from head quarters, and all articles requiring stamps are accounted for. The wheat caught fire by sparks from a passing freight locomo tive. Between two and three acres of wheat was destroyed before they suc ceeded in extinguishing the fire. East Oregonian : In tbe vicinity of Willow Springs recently six bead of cattle have been shot by unknown parties and tbe ears and brands cut off so the cattle could not be identified. The hind quarters of the dead cattle were taken awav in most instances. China Joe mourns the loss of a dog, which died yesterday. The Pendleton woolen mills will begin operations some time this month. . Two looms are running, and preparations are being made to start the whole plant. There wilt be 40 men and women employed in tbe woolen mills, and 100 in both the woolen and scouring mills. Their wages will range from $1 25 to $2 a day. L. B, Calderhead, general freight and passenger agent of the W. & C. R.,. was in the city Monday looking after the interests of his company. Mr. Calder head says the W. & 0. R. R. company will hereafter run (rains to Athena three times a week, and if they find the bust ness justifies it, will give Athena a daily train service over their line. La Grande Chronicle: J. E. Pamplin, the gentleman who was brought from San. Francisco to answer a criminal charge,' appeared for examination at Union Monday. On motion of ,the deputy prosecuting attorney the case was dismissed and Mr. Pamplin will re turn to San Francisco to join the next expedition of volunteers to Manila. Taitenger-Wright. Nicholas Taitenger and Miss Ethel Ray Wright were married yesterday evening at tbe parlors pi the Golden Rule hotel in Pendletpn. The Rev. Father Victor Garrand, . rector of St. Marry's Catholic church, officiated. Tbe wedding was a quiet affair and but a few friends attended. The bridal couple left on last night's train for Portland. Pierce's Big Farming. Henry Pierce has three combined harvesters at work on his wheat fields. Two of them are drawn by 24 horses each and harvest about 35 acres a day; one is drawn by an engine and covers between 50 and 60 acres daily. Mr, Pierce is now storing wheat at the Mis sion warehouse. Thanksgiving Services. Pursuant to tbe proclamation of Presi dent McKlnley a large congregation as sembled at the Christian church Sunday at 11 o'clock a. m. Arrangements bad been made for a nnion service. Music appropriate for the occasion was render ed by members of .the different church choirs, and by, a special choir. The declaration of war with Spain was read by J. B. Huatbgton. The preisdent's proclamation for thanksgiving waa read by Prcf Reid and a loyal and patriotic address was delivered by Rev. G. W. Rigby. Rev. Green closed the services ith a few appropriate remarks.
