An issue of some importance has
been raised by the proposition to
throw open the new government
forest reservations in California
during the coming summer to the
sheep, which, under the law, ae
not allowed to run in these forest
reservations, but the president has
power to make exceptions. The
coming season promises to be a
terribly severe one upon the stock
interests and the plea is made that
unless the forest reservations are
thrown open to the sheep, many
flocks will fitarveJmkalh. ,

dens of war if in the opinion of the
president and his advisers it shall
appear necessary to invoke that
terrible expedient in the interest
of humanity and national honor.
The soil of Oregon will yield
quite as much gold as the frozen
banks of the Yukon. It is more
certain to come out, too. People
who have the desire to acquire sud
den wealth had better take the
more slow and infinitely safer
course and remain at home. If is
the same energy is put forth in
Oregon more profit will result.-

Klondike relief has failed. It
was an unwarranted undertaking
in the first place. It was a case of
supposed needs and has ended as
do all such schemes if allowed to
"wait for a spell." Time in this
case proved the foolishness as well
as impossibility of getting relief
where It was thought needed.
The state election of Washington
this fall will be for the selection of
two congressmen, a legislature,
two supreme judges and county
officers. The people will also vote
on two constitutional amendments,
one relating to impartial suffrage
and the other to local option in
taxation. '
All the humorists are not at
large by any means. The prison
ers confined in the Hillsboro, 111.,
jail, learning thai volunteers "were
offering their services in the ovent
of war with Spain, telegraphed to
Governor Tanner:' "We are will
ing to leave here at once."
The Spanish government is find
ing out some things in this country
that Columbus never told them
about. Columbus was a great dis
coverer, but he didn't know it all.
Ladies' Home Journal Answered.

One thing more mentioned by
the Journal we wish to notico: In
speaking of the kind of teachers
needed in our schools, ho says:
"No superintendent, with the best
interests of woman at heart, should
ask or allow any girl or woman
employed during the week, to take
a permanent class in his school, no
matter what may bo the circum
stances or necessity, nd no man
who sees & woman at work during
the week should ask her to do so."
must say that this is contrary
to the experience of the past, that
women who have nothing to do
make the best teachers. 1 fail to
see why they would be more active
in this work than those who aro
accustomed to work. The Journal
would have us believe that idle
ness is conducive to Godliness and
influence. I think it will take
somotime to convince the people
that the women who find nothing
to do, the "society women," as he
calls them, are more godly and
more capable of influencing Sunday-school
children Godward than
the mothers who lay down their
lives for them and whose constant
prayer is that God may help them
to teach the children to honor ana
obev Him. The best women the
world has ever known have been
those who devoted their lives to
toil. Thev have been purest in
heart and life, and have influenced
the world for God. "The hand
that rocks the cradle" still rules
and will rule the world.
The eociety woman may be
wealthy, as he says she is, and may
attend regularly the festive board
and fill her place at the theater
and occupy a front seat at church
occasionally," but the churches will
be slow to believe that she is. the
better qualified to teach success
fully a class in Sunday school. As
a rule such women know very little
about the bible and less about
teaching the child how to live as
God would have him. She may
be able to tell how to conduct a
successful eame of progressive eu-
cher, play a game of backgammon
and conduct a successful tea party,
and yet not be able to teach in the
Sunday school.
Again, the Journal tells us that
it requires experience to know how
to deal with and successfully teach
the Sunday school. Now I don't
know how ''old maids" and child
less women in that particular
quarter are, but I do know that as
a rule, they have not had exper
ience with children, and if called
upon to deal with them, are very
impatient and fail to influence the
child as the mother does. Again,
I ask how can they have that ex
perience necessary for a successful
teacher, if they must be as the
Journal tells us, without any cares
all the week, and if to do anything
disqualifies therh for the position.
Now, if experience is essential, and
is power, as the Jounal says, is not
the mother better qualified to teach
a Sunday school class than are un
married women? Wo say yes, a
thousand times.
It is evident to my mind that
one great drawback to our schools,
and probably the greatest, is the
putting of inexperienced teachers
over Sund.ty school classes. Young
girls are entrusted with classes,
who do not understand anything
about the bible, much less under
standing how to teach it; but this
is no worse now than it has been,
and is no evidence that the Sunday
school is decaying. It is the duty
of all God-loving people to help
make the Sunday school all. it
ought to be, and to accomplish this
an exchange of ideas is necessary,
but we cannot do this by telling the
world that the Hchool is decaying.
Our words should be hopeful and
encouraging, although those
are at the helm may not be
ducting things in the very
wav. Tell the child who
who
has
climbed to the very topmost round
of the ladder that he is going to
fall, and fall he will.
Let us hold on to all the good
we have, maintaining the ground
we occupy and as opportunity is
afforded, climb higher until under
the guidance of God we scale the
highest peak and Btand secure on
the summit of 1 perfection, never

came.
The mother who rocks the cradle
and sings the sweet lullabies, prays
continually and labors constantly
for the crood of her child, knows
what is in the child's heart better
than anv one else knows how to
touch and mould its life for good.
She is the heroine and ever will be;
doing more to mould the individ
ual and national character than any
other. She lives nearer to God
and beinirin closer touch with the
divine life, can raise the child
nearer to God than any other.
It is a great blunder to suppose
for one moment that wealth and
position in society, in the sense
spoken of, is necessary to a godly
life or a successful teacher ot chil
dren. The best, most useful and
most godly men have been taught
by mothers to whom wealth was a
stranger, but to whom God was
well known, and in whose heart
the sunlight of God's love never
grew dim until it went down to
rise in splendor on the shores of a
brighter clime. Oh! for mothers
whose lives are in touch with God
and whose smiles are a benediction
to mankind.
Churches are. in mv humble
judgment, catering too much to the
whims of society. It is right to
try to save theso society people,
we should not for one moment
think because one happens to be
wealthy, that he is wiser than
others. A more correct knowledgo
will, as a rule, be found among the
common class, as they are called,
than among the wealthy. Yet, if
society women will come in and
run the Sunday school to better ad
vantage I, for one, am perfectly
willing. My all means let us make
it a great power for good; but let
us remember that it is a perma
nent factor in the progress of man
kind toward the goal of Christian
perfection.
